Great game, but weak crop of commercials. Nothing really stood out this year, but there were a few good spots.
-Coke meets GTA was really solid, but devolved into utter silliness about halfway through. Still, one of the best spots of the night. -The Bud Light commercials are always good for a laugh, but most of them were dull this year. Rock, Paper, Scissors was by far the best offering. -The K-Fed ad lived up to the hype. Watching K-Fed go from an over-the-top hip-hop video to the fast food surveillance camera was total gold and I think K-Fed's actually still got a good 15 minutes of fame left if he keeps poking fun at himself like this. This was second only to the Coke/GTA ad for best of the night.
And finally, anyone looking forward to kick ass movie trailers were left sorely disappointed. No Spider-man 3, no Shrek the Third, no TMNT. But there was plenty of Pride, a movie about troubled minority youths overcoming racism and discrimination...starring Bernie Mac and Tom Arnold (this, unfortunately, is not a joke). And if that wasn't enough, there was also Wild Hogs, which stars John Travolta, William H. Macy, Martin Lawrence, and Tim Allen as a group of four bikers. If that doesn't have trainwreck written all over it, I don't know what does.
I think my favourite was the 10 second spot for "Late Night" followed closely by the Garmin GPS homage to Ultraman with K-Fed for Nationwide taking third.
We had a mildly funny local spot, too - it's here (wcco.com) and, to get you interested, features a Baron von Raschke cameo.

I've seen the Coke/GTA ad before. Man, I hate when they can't come up with something new. But yeah, the commercials weren't that good. Frankly, I think it's been a couple years since they have been. With few exceptions, they're no better than regular commercials.
I really enjoyed the Blockbuster "Mouse" ad, the Sierra Mist ones (Jim Gaffigan being all kinds of wicked), the Toyota Tundra accelerating-truck-speeds-past-closing-doors one, Snickers "Mechanic" kissing one, the Budweiser "Dalmation" ad, and finally Emerald Nuts "Office" (starring THE Robert Goulet!).
Some real duds this year, but some good laughs as well. The Blockbuster "Mouse" should go over well for quite a while.
I personally laughed hardest at the Emerald Nuts/Robert Goulet ad. The best received with the group I watched the SB with was the Blockbuster "Mouse" ad. I also enjoyed the Dalmation ad and especially the sad ad about the assembly line robot that couldn't find work. Awwwww.
The Blockbuster one with the mouse, the assembly line robot and the three Survivor-esque Careerbuilder.com commercials were brilliant, brilliant, brilliant. I liked the magical journey a Coke bottle goes through while it's in the machine. ("Coke: Love", 2nd quarter). The Budweiser Crab God thing was good.
It's not an original Super Bowl commercial, but I love the Coca-Cola: Vice City one, too.
Of course I liked the result of the game even more! GO COLTS!

The ads were really disappointing this year, unlike the game. Mrs. Bash and I were very unimpressed although we did both burst out laughing at the Blockbuster mouse had which was the best ad of the night for us. Other notable ads included the Bud Light Bottle Opener and the K-Fed ad. GM's ad with the suicidal robot was the hands down worst ad of the night. There was nothing good about it, but YMMV.

Ladies and gentlemen, the following public service message is brought to you by your friends from D-Generation X, who would like to remind each and every one of you that if you're not down with that, we've got two words for you... Really poor year for the commercials - none of them made me laugh out loud like a few from last year.

The punchline to this one was one of the few times I chuckled in amusement all night.
Guy Driving: "Look, he has Bud Light." Axe Murderer: "But he has a chainsaw!"
That, Dave & Oprah, and Careerbuilder.com was about as good as it got.
K-Fed would have been funny if it had been a surprise and not endlessly hyped for weeks leading up to the game.
The GM suicidal robot spot was creepy, but it was emotionally engaging until they hit the punchline, which is more than an actively bad spot like Garmin (with its mind-numblingly stupid Power Ranger Zord-style battle) or a total bush-league spot like Salesgenie.com (which I honestly thought was going to be another male hair color spot the way they scripted it in the beginning).
smark/net attack Advisory System Status is: Elevated (Holds; June 18, 2006) While the switch from Cena to RVD should alleviate some complaints, the inevitability of the belt's return to Cena (note where Summerslam is this year) and the poor initial showing by the new ECW are enough to keep the indicator where it is for now. The pieces are in place, though, especially on RAW, for improvements to be made to the IWC's psyche in the near future.
I thought the K-Fed commercial was awesome. Luckily, I read he was gonna be in one but I didnt get spoiled. I did also read that he apologized to the fast food industry or something after he made it, but after seeing it I'm not sure why.
That being said, I also agree that this year's crop of commercials was pretty weak overall.
The Emerald Nuts/Robert Goulet was by far the funniest, in my opinion. The Slap and K-Fed ads were good too.
The one that surprised both my roommate AND I the most had to be the Blockbuster ad, though, as they haven't used that particular ad campaign for what is it, 4 or 5 years, now? Strange time for it to make a return. Not that it was bad, or anything...

Officially, it was because of the implication that fast-food workers are losers.
Unofficially, it is because apparently we all need to have representative organizations to create phony issues to be offended about.

My absolute favorite was the Snickers mechanics commercial, and it wasn't even close. That might be the most ridiculous commercial I've ever seen. Runners-up were E-Trade bank robbery, K-Fed/Nationwide (I loved K-Fed's hype man dusting off his cart of gold bars), and Sprint broadband connectile dysfunction. Others that I enjoyed:
* the Toyota Tundra commercials * the Careerbuilder.com commercials * Sierra Mist combover * Emerald Nuts * Bud Light hitchhiker (although I'm a bit surprised A-B would make driving such a big part of one of their beer commercials)
Not sure I understand all the love for the Blockbuster ad. It was mildly amusing though, I suppose.
Best was Robert Goulet. Honorable mentions to Snickers, the hitchhiker, rock/paper & slap Bud Lights, the Career Builder ads, the Ultron (bonus points for showing the bad hair band), the beard combover (don't forget the Daisy Dukes and rollerskates)
Worst was the Assembly Line suicide (we were all shocked into horror). Honorable mention to Sales Genie, Quattro (for being the same ad that has been on for months), any car ad that didn't try to be entertaining (a huge pet peeve of mine), and Blockbuster (two reasons: a) before they showed what the rabbit was doing, the angle from behind looked like he was masturbating, and b) I hated those characters when they were on the first time, because it was guaranteed that TSN was going to show their ads every half hour during Raw.
