OK, I've been a bit strapped for cash in recent months so I haven't spent much money on games. In fact, Vice City is the only game I've bought in maybe 4 moths. So, what's good right now? I'm kinda intrigued by Socom (sp?) if only for the headset w/ online play. I'm also looking at Red Faction 2 and Time Splitters 2. Can anyone reccomend any games for me?

I don't know. Socom is only worth it if you go all out for the online play. So if you're planning on doing PS2Online, it's as good a game to start with as any.

If you were choosing between Time Splitters 2 and Red Faction...Eh, I prefer Time Splitters. It's just a better all round game IMHO.

Or you could always buy Smackdown, which is very good.

Unless that's not your thing, in which case, I'd say Time Splitters.

Since everyone else is doing it (ok, not EVERYONE, but...)

Vikings (2-7) - I don't know. I didn't see it. Just saw that we lost.
Badgers (6-5) - Slipping into mediocrity six weeks in a row.
Buffy 7.Uhh Whatever this last one was earns a 7.00000314159 because the begining was terrible, but the meat of the episode was hillarious. But filler. Just like most of Season One...Is this some kind of whacky time warp?

Yeah, I intend on getting Smackdown eventually. I'm just curious as to what else is out there.

Tony Hawk is the best in the series, taking all the great concepts in Aggressive Inline and mixing them with a tweaked and awesome engine.

If you like RPG's, Suikoden III is the fuck-bomb. AT LEAST 65 hours of solid play. If you go balls out and get everything, over 100.

I haven't played the new one, but I like the more strategic RF engine over the twitchy TS one.

Tekken 4 doesn't revolutionize anything, but outside Soul Calibur and Virtua Fighter 4, it's the best 3D fighter available. If you don't own a DC or wouldn't like to spend the requisite year and a half it takes to become passable at VF, it's worth getting.

Mark of Kri may well just be sleeper of the year.

Sly Cooper is a chunky little platformer.

Kingdom Hearts sounds like it should suck and blow simultaneously and it does. It sucks you away from work and school and blows away expectations.

Virtua Fighter 4 is the only fighting game I'll even play anymore. We'll see when Soul Calibur 2 comes out.

PS2 Games worth noting;

FPS: Timesplitters 2 is good. Although it isn't a FPS, Starcraft: Ghost is looking nice so far as well but isn't out yet.

Sports: Madden 2003 and NBA 2k3. NBA 2k3 is an online title. And of course, Tony Hawk 4 is Tony Hawk 4.

Fighting: Tekken 4 if you don't want to spend tonnes of time with the game. If you LOVE fighting games, go Virtua Fighter 4.

Racing Sim: Grand Turismo A-Spec and Nascar Thunder 2003.

RPG: Final Fantasy X, hands down. Kingdom Hearts is very good as well.

Tatical Esponiage Action: The very awesome Metal Gear Solid 2.

Games worth abusing backward compatibility: Chrono Cross, Marvel vs Capcom (the first one), Chrono Trigger (it may be 16bits but it owns), and Final Fantasy IX.

ncaa football 2003...i seem to have more fun with the college games than madden, but when i evetually tire of college ball, i'll take my grads and run to madden 2003 and import them for some fun...

now that they added the 46, and quarter d's, and create a play/formation, i've had alot more fun with pro ball

just for shits and giggles, i've made the wishbone, double wing, maryland I and maryland I 2wr for pro ball

maryland I is a THREE back set, usually 2 FB's and the RB, and 2 TE's. becase it's an I, the formation is symertical. Ya, it does scream RUN, but if you sub the TE'swith WR's or have good catching TE's, then you have some passing options, plus you can have the FB's run routes, or sub in some WR's to run out of the back field.

It's a shame, but the Maryland Terps don't use the Maryland I anymore
Optioning with THREE blockers to a side, TE, and 2 FB's, lead to some monster yards.

Actually, I urge you to consider Dead or Alive 2: Hardcore. Even though it's a launch game, I still enjoy playing it more than Tekken 4 and Virtua Fighter 4 even now. Tekken 4 and VF 4 are still excellent games though.

I am also eagerly awaiting Soul Calibur 2.

Dead or Alive is fun to play, and I'd choose it over Tekken, but it has nowhere near the depth of Virtua Fighter. The thing I love about Virtua Fighter is that I never have to play the same way twice. Switching stances and figuring out new combos (that my fingers can actually perform!) is just pure heaven to me. That game always surprises me.

Oh, and pick up Guilty Gear X if you're into 2D fighters.

I haven't seen anyone mention the new Mortal Kombat game around here yet. Do any wieners like MK? MK: Deadly Alliance comes out this Monday and I already I have mine preordered at Software Etc.

I second all support for FFX. I just bought my PS2 about 2 weeks ago to play that game. I'm 38 hours into it, doubt I'm even half done and it's probably the best storyline I've ever seen in a video ogame. FFVII was my favorite RPG ever, but X might replace that. I'm glad to see lots of people giving praise for Suikoden III since I picked that up too, but haven't played it yet.

BTW if you are on a budget, the store in my area recently dropped FFX to $30. Maybe it's the same nationwide, I dunno. But that's a great deal.

A friend of mine gave me Tony Hawk 3, and I know it's supposed to be a great game and all, but I just don't get it! What am I supposed to do exactly, skate around the foundery or something (the only cool thing I found to do was skate myself into the moulten iron, but then I just come back to life and keep skating).

That, do tricks to score points, grab cash, etc. Haven't played THPS3, but if it's anything like 2 (which is en route... whoo!) then that's what y'all need to do.

Virtua Fighter is a very well made game. You could literally play that game for hours and hours. Dead or Alive 2 is just really really fun. I got attatched to the characters when I played Dead or Alive one. I love how interactive the environments are and how you can collect certain items to raise your score. The fights are just so kinetic too. It's a very anime-like fighting game, which is probably why I like it.

I also enjoy the Bloody Roar series, especially the recent Gamecube and PS2 versions.

As far as 2-D fighters.....HELL YEAH! I don't have any Street Fighter games, but I've played almost anything else. My favorite 2-D series is King of Fighters, and Guilty Gear X is AWESOME, but basically if you have a 2-D fighting game with anime-style characters, I'll enjoy it.

Oh, and has anyone played or heard of Ehrgiez? It's a Squaresoft fighting game that has it's own cast, but the coolest part is you can fight with FF7 characters!!!!!!! I'm talkin' Cloud, Tifa, Vincent, Sephiroth, and YUFFIE!!!!!!! HELL YEAH!!!!!! I *heart* Yuffie.

Even though you can buy it for PC now, I had a lot of fun with Hitman 2 on PS2. Another game I bought in the last few monthes that I enjoyed was Mark of Kri. Somnone mentioned it earlier, but it also win the 2002 ICO award for most overlooked game. It may be the Disney Tarzen like graphics that turns off people. But something has to be said for a game that lets you rip someone's spear out of their hands and impale them corndog style into the ground. Also it's priced at $39.99, making it the best bang for the buck since my last trip to Thailand.

Ah yes, Ehrgeiz. I unlocked everything in the fighting section in a matter of under two hours. Besides the fact you could play as the FF7 characters, the game was a Tobal ripoff that lacked depth.

If you're into 3-D fighters, I'd wait for Soul Calibur 2. Currently your choice is limited to depthless button-mashers in Tekken and Dead or Alive or a very deep, yet extremely complex game in Virtua Fighter. Soul Calibur manages to walk the line between the two and it's rumored there will be some sort of online support for it.

Just curious, what's Tobal?

And I'm not sure what you mean about DOA2 not having depth, are you talking about the moves, or the number of modes, or the replay value? Because It's pretty "deep" in all those areas.

I will defend Ehrgiez to the death! I enjoyed playing it, and I still do. Plus, the RPG that they include is EXTREMELY deep cosidering it's not the main game.

The only MK I hated was 3; 4 was alright -- at least it tried to move from the 2D sprite into 3D animation. There's nothing, however, that beats MK2. Well... maybe Johnny Cage's triple-header... but that's a different story.
