While most residents of Wienerville have been watching RAW, I've been watching MNF. On Veterans' Day - MNF #500 - they announced the results of a vote for the best MNF ever. The winner: the 2000 match-up between the Jets and Dolphins, notable for taking more than four hours to complete. My questions:

1) Why were three of the five choices Dolphins games?

2) Were there no acceptable Green Bay games?

3) How did the vote break down? (I'm wondering where the 1985 Bears-Dolphins game ranked.)

You're Right Steph last night was the greatest Monday night game ever, watching the Raiders embarass teh donkies was great after four weeks of suckatude.
Oh you were talking about the halftime thing. Like the whole baseballs greatest moments thing it was just another bunch of crap to hype.

1) Because the Dolphins have played in the most MNF games, 65.

2) Possibly the 48-47 Packers win over Washington on Oct. 17, 1983

3) Neither the MNF site, nor the Dolphins or Jets sites, had a breakdown of the vote. I do know, however, that I was WAY drunk for that game...and damn near cried when Miami lost.

The joy of living on the West Coast is that we get to watch BOTH MNF and Raw....
And I needed a tie last night to win my pool... so I thought the game sucked! LOL
And did anyone else dig the old-school jackets Madden and Michaels were wearing? I loved it...

The consensus seems to be that the "modern" best MNF game was the bears/fins game in 1985.

I saw in the paper that game had like a 37 rating (not share, RATING).

Martze's list in McPaper was funny, since it included the LT/Joey T on it. (To quote Homer Simpson while watching his tape of Greatest Football Injruies, "aw. you made me miss Joe Theismann." )

I don't think the Rams/Bucs game from Sept. 2000 (Bucs 38, Rams 35) got the respect it deserved. It made it to the second of three rounds of voting, but it is possibly the most exciting game I have ever seen, Monday Night or otherwise.

The Titans/Ravens game last year was pretty good. Really good defense, and two teams that hated each other. McNair sneaks the winning td in as time expires, but after a fifteen minute discussion the refs (rightfully) decide to take it away and run an untimed play. And of course the Ravens stop McNair. It's the only game i've ever seen decided on a play after the game was offically over. And I was there, so I am biased.

The Bears/Fins game wasn't the best played, but it was certainly the biggest one in MNF history. 12-0 Super Bowl Shuffling Bears, going down to Miami, home of the only perfect season...it was too perfect, and one of the few times sports ever made me cry was that Bears loss. And it still stands as the highest rated MNF game ever.

On a side note, that 2000 Jets/Fins game was a true nitemare. The most evil game ever for me in fantasy/gambling terms, as every possible way I could lose happened in that game.

The '83 Pack-Skins shootout RULED on so many levels. Honorable mention to the Pack-Broncos blizzard game, where Lynn Dickey totally out-performed Elway...but the Pack still lost. (Dammit!)

And the brilliant yellow jackets OWNED. Notice how they also forsook the usual fancy-schmancy booth setups, with lighted backdrops and plasma monitors, for the old-fashioned backs-to-the-field angle. (Dig the crazy technicolor-lettering on the white ABC logo, too!)

And didja notice the usual ABC Sports mic flags (ironically enough, left over from their previous graphical scheme, before the black and red ABC Sports logo) were gone, replaced by the classic black ABC circle? Another cool nod to old-school.

Even better...the clips of older opening montages, and Dandy Don f'n Meredith. If only Howard Cosell could have come back to life for one night...and chokeslammed Dennis Miller down to field level.

Yeah.



Star wipe, and...we're out.

I was in Mile High that night and the Pack should have tried to hold onto those first two handoffs - Fumble/Touchdown...Fumble/Touchdown !!!! 3 feet of snow by game time made for a very interesting game......

Based on those wicked jackets and my intense love for the Raiders (only matched by my beloved home team the Falcons) I'd throw my vote in for this week's big ol number 500.

Snyder had run out of gas his last two years. They weren't bad but couldn't make a bowl. What he did from 1991 to 2003 was a remarkable job and makes him one of the best coaches of all time but he lost "it" and he knew it.
