Quoth Jay Bower of 411wrestling:

"When Benoit returns, look for him to be an almost instant main eventer for the Smackdown! brand. The WWF would like to couple Benoit with a manager upon his return and has been trying to find the perfect mouthpiece for "The Crippler" for quite some time now. The original plan was for Paul Heyman to take the role, but his new association with Brock Lesnar prevents that. The heavily rumored candidate is said to be Arn Anderson who the WWF thinks can do an exceptional job at giving Benoit the final piece of the puzzle that he lacks in order to truly be a dominant main event force in the main event for a long time to come."

If the WWF was thinking of pairing him with Heyman, that almost certainly would mean that he is going to be a heel, right? I think if he's going to be a heel a manager is a great idea and there's none who would be better than AA, but I'd rather he be a face, really. I mean, HHH is still essentially riding his recent return face heat; why can't Benoit?

Nah, make him a heel. Not just a heel, but the evil, Dynamite Kid-style(circa 80-83) "crippler heel, who uses his incredible technical skill to stretch, maul and cripple his opponents. You know, have some nights where he locks on the Crossface and refuses to let go, resulting in the victim doing a stretcher job and staying off tv for a week or so. THAT's the way to bring Benoit back. Besides, being a face takes away all options for creativity. YOu have to be relatively nice and not show the opponent up to badly. As a heel, Benoit could finally cut loose, even though he'll have to do the J.O.B at the PPV.

"I hate motherfuckers claimin' that they foldin bank
But steady talkin shit in the holding tank
First you wanna step to me
Now your ass screamin for the deputy
They send you to Charlie-Baker-Denver row
Now they runnin up in ya slow
You're gone, used to be the Don Juan
Now your name is just 'Twan
Switch it, snap it, rollin your eyes and neck
You better run a check..."

Stevie Richards would be a great mouthpiece for Benoit...although I don't think Benoit is that bad of a mouthpiece himself. He gets his point across in under 20 minutes, that's all that matters to me.

I don't understand the obsession with making Benoit a heel when he returns. The fans will dig him being back, he's got a ready made feud with Jericho upon his return, keep him a face I say and let the fans enjoy him being back for a bit. Personally I prefer face Benoit to heel Benoit, since face Benoit has a better chance of not getting squashed by everyone in sight.

As was pointed out in another thread on here, Rocky leaving opens up a face spot on the "Smackdown! Brand". One can easily assume that Benoit will look to fill that slot. Of course, this assumes that Edge does not take his opportunity given him and run with it.

I'll cast my vote for Benoit to return as a face, although I'd rather see him return as a heel. As a face, there are storyline elements already in place for feuds with Jericho and Angle (for stealing the rolling german supplexs, and not to mention the fact that Angle got Vince to sign him) And while we've seen both feuds before, I certainly wouldn't mind seeing them again
I don't really see much promise if he returns as a heel, though. A feud with Edge would probably be good, but doesn't have me as excited as those listed above.

I'd rather see him as a face as well. As a heel, he tends to get assenkicked by everyone left and right. Jericho's already a heel, as is Angle. Benoit would be an established foil for those two, and if paired with Hogan, that would be the oddest damn thing I've ever seen in the world.

Not that I want to see Benoit overshadowed by Hogan. But I'd rather take the chance that Benoit would be the less-cheered member of that team than having Hogan booked to kick his ass.

I'd love to see someone be a dominant heel again, but the WWF doesn't do that now and since, like spf2119, I'd like to see Benoit not get squashed, I guess I'd like to see him as a face when he comes back.

Whichever way they go, I hope they use his music off of Forceable Entry because it is awesome and would fit him to a tee.

I think you have to bring back Benoit as a Face, but I think getting him a "mouthpiece" is a bad way to go. I like the return of the manager as much as anyone, but Main Eventers should be able to go it alone, I think. The only way hes ever going to get better on the mic is to keep talking.

Bring Benoit back as a face, definitely. The other two New Bloods are heels, and Benoit right now is played as one too. His face push was just gathering steam when HHH screwed up the plan by getting injured, leading them to make the match in which Benoit got injured... A year off shouldn't derail it.

I'd just like to see Benoit. Smackdown really needs him with Rock gone and with Hogan not in shape to put on too many t.v. matches. I would like to see a heel Benoit lose to a face Hogan just for the internet reaction. It could be almost comical.

Travis, that would assume that he'll get to even get the honor of jobbing to the H twins. He's gonna get Jericho or Angle as a face, or maybe he'll come back as a heel and go after Edge.

Arn would be an excellent mouthpiece for Benoit - Benoit's mic work hardly set the world on fire, Arn still knows how to light up a crowd, and the two have shared Horseman roots. No one can reach the top without some type of promo style - and, currently, Benoit has none. The assassin with another man's voice has potential.

As for this face/heel debate, I would promote Benoit as the "Crippler" once again and set him on Angle (and then Jericho) in a battle of incapacitating submission moves. Whether he's called a "face" or a "heel" will hardly matter. He could keep his "heelish" bone-crunching ways - and the crowd will eat it up. To quote Gracchus in "Gladiator":

"He will bring them death - and they will love him for it."

Isn't Arn associated with the RAW brand? I thought Benoit was on SD!?

He might work as a Crippler face, but it would be an uphill battle. The man just exudes heelish nastyness, and channeling that to the forces of good would take some work. Hell, all he really had to do as a heel to show his nasty side was show that evil, gap-toothed smile. I'd love to see if they could sell him as a face, though.

Arn was never *drafted*; his association with RAW is as a Friend Of Flair. I believe that you could switch him to Smackdown! without owing the world a protracted explanation.

I guess it's assumed "clerical staff" got divided up with everyone going with their ally. I assume Patterson and Brisco are with Vince and AA is with Flair.

I think he will return as a face, and after his short 'welcome back' couple of random matches be addressed by Angle who reminds him he helped him get drafted 3rd.
What follows will be a sweet feud I guess.

Or bring him back as a heel and kill people left and right.
I think Benoit can do it both, no matter if he takes the mic or not.

I think he will come back straight into big feud, hopefully with Angle so they can finally do the ultimate 60 minute iron man match!

He was getting over as an asskicking face though so there is no reason not to follow through with it when he does get back.

Maybe eventually they'll finally reform the Horsemen with him as the leader and direct link to Flair and Raw.

Why can't it be both? It's not like the Wrestling Gods opened the skies and said "Goldberg must now fight Jericho!!!" and they just shrugged and started fighting.
