I'm taking the over.
It is not humanly possible for it to get better in Pakistan right now. Or ever.

You wanted the best, you got... Out of Context Quote of the Week. "Jesus Christ, he's got a fucking Sherman tank between the legs." (Cerebus) I wonder how many people are glaring at Musharraf right about now...
I was just waking up when I heard about this, and thought there was a suicide bombing, then they rushed her into a car or somewhere safe, then she got shot... which would've been a lot more insidious. Here's hoping that if there's any sort of investigation, it gets dealt with quickly, but I'm in the same boat as Socks.
CEO3: I'll take the over too, but only because they're in clip-show mode until the new year.

| #5 Posted on 27.12.07 1441.52 | Instant Rating: 4.05 | I was watching the morning news on my local Fox channel when this all happened and they announced she was having surgery from a bombing at her rally.
Not 10 mins later they announce that she died from getting shot in the neck from 1 of 6 bullets when she was in that so-called bullet-proof car and then the assassin "blew himself up" for good measure.
Yeah, saying that things won't get better in Pakistan is the biggest understatment right now.
On a related note. I can understand why the price of oil went up because of this (it always goes up when there is the smallest hint of something happening somewhere in the world), but why would it affect the price of gold? All day I keep hearing that this caused the price of gold to rise. It just baffles me.

Not a whole lot to add to this thread, except that CBC National was reporting that she was standing up in the car, with her upper body out of the 'sun roof' opening so that she could wave to support her followers who were surrounding the car.

EDIT: 19 reported dead so far in ensuing riots, troops in Karachi given orders to shoot on sight, Musharraf blames 'extremists', Sharif blames Musharraf. I can't see any way meaningful elections can go ahead.

When bad things happens in the world, investors get nervous and steer money into assests that are historically 'safe' bets, like gold, pushing the price up.
spf put it much more eloquently though.

Sirhan Sirhan knocking off Bobby Kennedy in 1968 because of his support for Israel, McKinley getting killed by an anarchist in 1901 and Lincoln going from reviled to beloved in 1865 due to Booth are a few examples of political assassinations in the United States. Remember Pakistan, as a political entity, is in its formative stages in comparison to the U.S., thus earlier political assassinations are relevant. Maybe I'm missing some angle here, but the only way that I can see Musharraf surviving in power is to 'have an incident occur' with India over Kashmir and use that to prevent the nation disintegrating, him being exiled or him being the next on the hit list. | Mr. Boffo

I did remember McKinley and Lincoln, but didn't include them because of the time frame. You are right that that is the stage they seem to be in. I just hope that they can survive long enough to get past it. I didn't know that was why Robert Kennedy got killed. MLK and Malcom X probably both qualify as well. The public school history classes don't teach much about the 60's (heck, we were lucky if we made it to WW2 before the school year ended). | drjayphd

You made it to WW2? I was amazed if we hit WW1 in a given school year.
