Going heavy into spoilers...

Do you like the Kennedys? Because apparently, Edward Blake loves them. Loves them, I tells ya. JFK, RFK, Teddy Kennedy, and Jackie Kennedy are the supporting cast of this book and there is some disturbing but intriguing stuff here. Specifically a conversation between Jackie and Eddie about what's to be done about a certain "drug addled, peroxide whore". And then Eddie does it.

But here's what really blew me away more than JFK blown away: Before Watchmen: The Comedian #1 flies completely in the face of the opening credits of the Watchmen movie. Total 180. If you recall, The Comedian shot JFK in Dallas. Not here; he loves Jack. Instead, the FBI decoyed him from meeting up with the Kennedys on a fools errand against Moloch The Mystic so the assassination in Dallas can go down.

So The Comedian didn't kill JFK?! But the movie said... and now the prequel comic says... Now, I don't know what fake history to believe.

This was the weakest of the four minis' first issues (I'll wait for you to post reactions to Nite Owl #1), even if it did provide the Moloch/Eddie connection so crucial to Rorschach's investigation in Watchmen.

Frankly, the mini could end here. Eddie has been disillusioned and left so shaken that he becomes the jerk we know him to be from the Crimebusters meeting. We know from the Moore story that Eddie is already not a nice guy. He's wearing his yellow clown costume when he tries to rape Sally.

I'm curious if Eddie will chase down the assassin and learn of a plot that foreshadows Adrian's. Otherwise, I can skip the rest of this mini.

At a recent comic convention in St. Louis, I saw Denny O'Neil on a panel and he said he always saw comic book continuity as different than movie continuity as different than TV/animated continuity (he was talking about the batman franchise in that instance). That may be a way to look at things like this since I don't recall JFK being assassinated by the comedian as something in the book.

It wasn't. It was added for the movie. I was under the mistaken impression the movie and the book were the same thing continuity-wise and that the movie just expanded on things here and there while omitting other things for running time. I guess the movie doesn't count at all for Before Watchmen continuity. Which is fine.

I'm shocked by this. I have no love for the Kubert sons, but JOE KUBERT got my attention. Turns out, this and Silk Spectre are the best of the books so far. The twist on the Crimebusters meeting was a nice touch that in no way changed what Moore wrote, and I liked he last page a whole bunch. I expected very little, and I liked it a whole lot. I even liked Dan's bad-ass monologue when he debuted as the new hero. It provides a good contrast to his later, softer stature.

In the original comic book series, Comedian is tagged with killing Woodward and Bernstein (thus preventing Nixon's resignation as the Watergate scandal petered out.)

I think that there is a throwaway comment about the Comedian liking grassy knolls, but (if I remember correctly) it is made by someone other than Comedian and he simply doesn't disagree with them.

I think trying to make Comedian some sorta Venom in his limited series is a bad idea. He is just a bad dude with a shit ton of problems. If anything, I would like to see his adventure through the eyes of another character. Maybe someone tied to him in Nam, a Charlie Sheen to Tom Beringer in Platoon with Dr.Manhattan as Willaim Deafo. Dude gets involved in Adrian's conspiracy to be killed which leads to Comedian's change of heart. I also thought he killed JFK are was at least involved even prior to the film. I think the interesting thing about this is how many things they get wrong as opposed to get right.

A lot of good stuff from DC this week and it's the beginning of the end for Batman: BATMAN #676: It's the official start of Batman R.I.P. in which Tim Drake asks about Damien and we see one of the more frightening takes on the Joker.
