Boy, they REALLY wanted to get rid of Lowell. Considering they're cutting payroll by about $15 million......you gotta do what you gotta do, I guess.

If Ramirez is M.L. ready, it'll also save the Fish money they'd spend on Alex Gonzalez or another veteran replacement.

Looks good to me just because it weakens the Marlins. If the Marlins fire sale continues and the Mets get Castillo and Lo Duca, and Delgado goes off to an American League team then that's what less team the Mets have to worry about next year.

This trade would've been a whole lot worse if:

* Hanley wasn't starting to show cracks
* He wasn't blocked at SS and 2B

If that PtbNL is someone like Lester, I kill. Since Bowden's getting another interview, that is a distinct possibility.

I'd like to thank the Marlins for having a fire sale. I'll take Lowell in Fenway and hope he rebounds, can't be worse than Millar was and he can play an excellent 3rd and move Youkilis to 1st. In as short time, the Red Sox will go from an old rotation to a rotation with 2 mid 20's guys with live arms in Beckett and Papelbon to go with Arroyo, Schilling and Wakefield. Wells probably gets dealt to the N.L. West, and Matt Clement will be left on a curb someplace, or, if he turns things back to first half of last season form, Papelbon could go to the pen and deepen the bullpen. As for Hanley Ramirez, I always get concerned when guys are in the Red Sox minor league system for a long period of time. The name Frankie Rodriguez always comes to mind. Now, time to start waiting for the Yankees countermove.
And, with Dontrell Willis having 3 years of service time, next winter will probably be when he goes on the trade market.

It said in the story that they added the PTBNL so that the Marlins would take Sanchez instead of Lester, so I think you are safe.

Well, it sounds like the player's Jesus Delgado, but he was just added to the 40-man a few days ago and therefore doesn't have to be named later. So who knows.

Don't know if this deserves its own thread or not. ESPN is reporting that Marlins management is trying to relocate the team, and could do so as soon as 2008, when their lease expires.

Something is wrong with this team. It's already on its third owner. They've won two World Series in their twelve year history. And yet they're planning on leaving. I don't know enough to know who the blame falls on, but someone needs to be blamed.

Marlins president David Samson says the team would like to remain in south Florida, but not in Miami. Other possibilities include Portland, and as always, Las Vegas.

While some blame goes on the fans, a lot of it goes on the politicians, who are just not helping the process of a new stadium along at all.

The reason Henry, the 2nd owner left, was because he didn't think he could get a new stadium. Turns out he was right. Loria has done everything but put up the entire $400 million or however much it would take himself.

Two basketball arenas and one hocky arena have been built in the time the Marlins have been petitioning for a stadium. Something is wrong there.

It's easy for me, as an out of state fan, to say, "please, move the team." But I know there are some die-hard Marlins fans in Florida who will be devestated to see the team go.

I would have made the deal, if I were the Yanks, and thrown Wang to Florida....if in addition to taking back Lowell, they could have also thrown in a Sean Henn type arm and wrangled Pierre, also. I mean, Beckett is only 25 friggin years old, so it's not like you're throwing kids away for a geriatric.

Looks like Delgado is gone to the Mets (sports.yahoo.com).

Think Joe Girardi is rethinking his decision to coach them?

I'm sure the "Mets are now the favorite in the NL East" predictions are going to start. But it seems to me that the Mets do this every few years, and they still stink, and then they owe some player 10 billion dollars six years after he retires because they overpaid. What's different this time?

My dad,who is a Yankees fan, went on a tirade last night about that. The day Kevin Brown is OUT of a Yankees uniform will probably be the 2nd greatest day of his life.

And the Mets are already favorites in the NL East. Haven't I heard that before. I can still hear the sucking of Mo Vaughn.

I think more than anything Joe is probably excited just to be given the opportunity. It's not like any of us expected him to win a World Series in his first ever season as a manager.

Even when the Mets acquired Beltran last offseason, the Braves were still (in my mind) the favorite to win the NL East. I don't see this acquisition really affecting that for the 2006 season, either.

So, in answer to your question: it's not a matter of an acquisition completely changing the team as much as a case of every little bit helps. If Delgado can make a big contribution and Beltran can recover from a disappointing 2005 season, the Mets could be serious contenders, at the very least for the Wild Card, but I agree in the sense that they still wouldn't (and shouldn't) be considered favorites to win the NL East.

Just wanted to say how happy I am about this trade, but I worry about Beckett and his injury history. Still, he did blow the Yankees away in the Stadium in a must-win WS game, so anybody who does that is welcome by me.

Now, can we take care of getting some form of GM, please? Larry? Hello?

Because, somehow this trade would've been better if they HAD a formal GM right now? If this is what front office-chaos nets you on the field, I NEVER want another GM.

Maybe because the Yankees don't have any prospects as good as the guys that the Sox sent over?

Please, yall are really comparing Carlos Delgado to Mo Vaughn? Mo Vaughn was injured the season before the Mets acquired him and were just morons to take a chance on him. Carlos Delgado on the other hand just hit 32 homeruns and knocked in 99 runs and that was an OFF season. If you don't want a lineup with Reyes, Beltran, Wright, Floyd and Delgado then you're crazy.

And let's not pretend like their acquisitions last year were that horrible, they did improve by 12 games, and in the playoff race most of the season and that was with Beltran not even at one hundred percent.

Not only have the Mets improved but if they get Wagner then they get even better and hurt the Phillies big time, and the Braves aren't as good without Mazzone and Furcal if he doesn't come back.

I hate saying anything nice about the Mets, but the Mo Vaughn trade wasn't a complete fiasco. They dumped Kevin Appier's albatross contract (which the Angels waived for the largest waived contract in major league history up to that point), and after insurance, didn't really suffer much financial damage on Vaughn. Now, Roberto Alomar, Kaz Matsui and Carlos Baerga becoming stiffs after becoming Mets might be a lesson not to trade for Soriano.
As for Delgado, they would have to be stupid not to make the trade. However, there does have to be some question whether Delgado can perform in a pressure environment, as he's never been in a situation where the fans demand performance in big spots, not hitting 3 run home runs when the team is down 9 in the 7th.
Even with these acquisitions, and potentially the Wagner acquisition, there are still some very serious questions about the Mets. Glavine is a year older. Benson pitches well enough to lose. Zambrano, well, I thought Rick Peterson could correct his flaws in 10 minutes? And, considering that each of the past 2 seasons Pedro has faded down the stretch, him pitching in the March International Tournament should be a concern, as there are only so many pitches/innings in his arm.

Perfect in a baseball purist kinda way I assume? No way is there a maximum of 21 playoff games. TV execs would die. Team owners would be appalled. Who plays who in your playoffs? Do you have East Vs South and Central Vs West? Seedings?
