Like "Be Cool" and other Elmore Leonard stuff, "Get Shorty" is alot of fun, but not slapstick wacky. They don't have alot of punchline jokes, but the odd situations and quirky characters are humorous on a subtle level. I think that's why "The Big Bounce" was a flop- it tried to be too slapstick wacky.
"Get Shorty" is definitely worth a rental or cable viewing. Watch for James "Tony Soprano" Gandolfini as a burly bodyguard.
If you like "Shorty", I'd recommend checking out Leonard's books "Maximum Bob" and "Tishomingo Blues".

If the Rock's gay bodyguard is as funny as his gay bartender skit he did on SNL, it should be enjoyable.
