| #1 Posted on 4.11.05 1727.37 | Instant Rating: 3.19 | Part of me feels really dirty posting this, because usually, Skip Bayless is just another one of those guys who just spews whatever comes out of his mouth just to get himself some attention and comes off like a complete fucking moron. (The few times I've seen him on 1st and 10, my man Woody Paige has just totally schooled him.)
But goddamn if he isn't right on every single point on this one.
Benson should say goodbye (sports.espn.go.com)
Bodies were still floating in the flooded streets when Benson was dancing with San Antonio officials. Benson strongly suggested he wanted to make San Antonio the Saints' permanent home. Yes, it's possible he was merely trying to (1) sucker San Antonians into filling the Alamodome for the three "home" games the Saints are playing there, while (2) creating leverage to negotiate a much sweeter deal with the Superdome.
But as usual, Benson said all the wrong things. Handling the media is a crucial aspect of owning a sports franchise, and Benson consistently has sent the wrong message to fans: I'm not sure how to win, but you can bet I'm going to make money.
Ain't that the truth...

There's still some questions lingering over a few of the draft moves they either made or didn't make (Jericho being a prime example), but the stage is set for a solid run to Summerslam that may send the indicator down. Bayless is one of those loudmouth sportswriters who will say anything and everything with the sole intent of getting himself over. That seems to be the norm with a lot of sportswriters today (and hell, pundits in general), but he's the worst of the bunch. Plus I'm fairly certain that he makes shit up (or has on at least one occasion), so he's a crapy journalist and an unethical one, too. | Crimedog

Wow...that's a pretty serious charge. Got any proof?
Anyway. The frustrating thing about a guy like Bayless (and numerous others out there) is that when they just write, and don't try to be so "edgy", they can be really good. It's when they start trying to show how much "attitude" that they have that I just shake my head and move on. | BigSteve

Here. (proxy.espn.go.com) It's an old ESPN column from August that is now in the Insider section. I can't read it to quote the relevant portion, unfortunately.
The gist was that this was a column written a few days after Palmeiro tested positive for steroids and a few weeks after Bayless wrote another column (proxy.espn.go.com) saying that Raffy shouldn't be in the Hall of Fame. Now of course Bayless being the kind of guy that he is, this second column will be a chance for him to push his own argument against Palmeiro - which is fair enough because I agree that there was a good reason to bash Raffy that week.
But old Skip Bayless couldn't just stick to the fact that Raffy was caught cheating and likely perjuring himself as a reason to criticize him. No, he opened his column with this story about his friend who has a son that is/was a big Palmeiro fan. Now coincidentally, this friend and his son are going to the game the very day Palmeiro was suspended. And in another stunning coincidence, they had been in DC all day and therefore hadn't heard the news that Palmeiro had been suspended.
As incredibly unlikely as that story might be, I'd say it could happen. Except for the fact that the game that day started at 12:30 PM which sort of renders his claim that his friend and his son were in DC "all day" sort of, well, looking like complete bullshit. So given that inconsistency and the way that the whole anecdote didn't really pass the smell test for me, I feel fairly confident saying that Bayless made it up out of whole cloth.
And if anyone has Insider and would post the first section of the first column I linked (I assume that would be ok, but I don't want to run afoul of anything), I'd be grateful.

Now that there is a natural disaster, Benson is just supposed to forget the fact that he feels the state treated him like shit, and stick around and play in a dome he didnt want to be in to begin with? | CRZ

Well, ESPN.com hasn't had to try very hard to make Benson look like a jackass. I don't care about all the stuff before Katrina; you just can't do what Benson's done after one of the worst natural disasters in US history and NOT expect to be shredded for it.
As for the Bayless stuff, that's rather interesting. |
