Baron Davis shocked the Warriors by opting out of his contract on Monday. Imagine their surprise now.
NBA front-office sources told ESPN.com's Marc Stein that the guard reached a verbal agreement with the Clippers on Tuesday night and will sign a new multiyear contract with Los Angeles after the leaguewide moratorium on signings and trades is lifted July 9.
Davis was in line to make $17.8 million in the last year of his deal with the Warriors, but after telling the team that he wanted to stay, opted out at the last minute.
Sources told ESPN.com that Davis, 29, will receive a five-year deal worth an estimated $65 million.
I think Elton Brand re-signing with the Clips just went from a question mark to a foregone conclusion. Unless someone blown an Achilles in the offseason (which with THIS team, you never know), I like where things are going.
How much must Davis hate Nellie to take essentially a $5 million pay cut this season to go to the Clippers? With Davis and a healthy Brand, you could realistically start talking about the Clippers as contenders for the #8 seed in the Western Conference.
Do you blame him? When your coach is a big enough egomanical idiot to bench you the second half of a must win game that is the difference between going to the playoffs or home for the summer just to prove who's boss, it's time to move on. I'm not that surprised that Davis wanted out of GS so badly. Let's see how great a team the Warriors are now with only a overrated blowhard to lead them. Baron was the main reason (maybe the only reason) the Warriors got back to respectability the last two years.

Just to make sure... you have heard the rest of the story, right? Baron had set up a huge birthday party for himself the night before in Phoenix and was out partying late. He stunk up the first half and Nelson had enough...

OK, I didn't know that. But still, is what essentaily a elimination game to get into the playoffs the right time to sit your best player for half the game? It doesn't matter if he was parting the night before or if he stunk it up the first half (he was 2 for 13, I think); if you really wanted to punish him, you could fine him or chew him out in the media later on instead of clipping your team at the knees when they needed their top scorer the most. Every time I see a top scorer struggle in the first half (like Kobe, for ex.), I hear the commenators says he has to be continually fed the ball, not sit down. To me, it just seemed like Nellie was pulling a play to show he's the man in charge more than coaching the Warriors to the playoffs. That's why, IMO that despite his so-called 'genius', he has never coached a team into the finals. He's all about filling his ego.
