I try to be positive about these things -- really, I do. But there wasn't much I could say that was good about the PPV.
The Austin-Bischoff contest was downright embarrassing. I did not find any of it (okay, maybe the stunner on Mae) the least bit funny. The strange thing, though? I was in a movie theatre watching the event with, maybe 60 other people, and many were laughing their heads off at those segments. What the hell? I feel like the Simpsons episode where Homer has the crayon removed from his nose, and everyone else is laughing at the Julia Roberts-Richard Gere movie except for him. Anyhoo....
Steiner tripping off the apron makes it to my personal list of favorite botched spots. That said, Scott and Test performed as well as they could have. That's the best you can hope for.
La Resistance make the worst possible tag champions I've ever seen... and I was a fan back in the days of Greg Valentine and Brutus Beefcake. What possible match could they have that would be worth watching? Seriously. Nothing personal against them, I just don't think they're talented enough.
Booker T - WHAT THE HELL? WHAT THE HELL? WHAT THE HELL? That finish made no sense whatsoever, and just continues to make Book look awful. Who does he keep pissing off backstage? Unless, as someone else mentioned, they're going to have him beat HHH at SummerSlam. But I just don't see that.
Jericho vs Goldberg, I thought, was very good. Goldberg sold better than I've ever seen him before (unless he was legit injured from the spear)... and that was definitely the right way to use him. A short-ish match that made Jericho look good but still went with the right decision at the end.
But... what the hell was with the Tigger-Goldberg confrontation after the match? Will Eeyore be ``next''?
Michaels vs Flair underwhelmed me. Why was Michaels no-selling so much of it? Flair is still awesome, not just for his age, but any age. I guess I just expected more from this pairing.
Nash vs HHH was okay. Slightly better than I thought it would be. You've got a serious problem, though, when a retired guy who has no designs on returning to the ring gets the biggest crowd reaction. Again, they went with the right decision putting HHH over (THIS TIME, that is; not the 5,000,000 other times he has). If they can still build this to a decent match with Goldberg -- provided he's still around for SummerSlam -- I guess I'm all for it.
Nothing in the show that will make me buy the next Raw-only PPV, let me put it that way....
I missed the first half of it because the Charter cable folks screwed up the access code. They said the codes thay had been given to activate the PPV for individual accounts were bad, and they were swamped with complaint calls. I finally got to see it in the middle of the HBK/Flair match and caught the PPV replay. This did nothing to lighten my mood. I had the grumps during the show, so I can't be objective about it.
But who wants objectivity?
I thought it was a weak show with unappealing results that obviously set up the *next* PPV. But I think Jericho and HBK came away looking the best of the bunch. I didn't have high hopes for the main event, but Foley's pop was embarassingly loud.

I'm not sure why everybody is saying Booker T was "made to look bad" in his match. He kicked Christian's ass the entire match and the only way Christian won was because he had to get himself DQ'd. Christian is becoming a Honky Tonk Man IC champion. This will lead to a rematch, or a number of rematches, with Booker T and there'll be more heat on the match because everybody knows Booker T can win and wants to see Christian get his ass beat.
Well, here I am, being me again. I'll agree that Bad blood for some reason didn't click with me. However, I'd put this way ahead of Backlash (content wise) so that makes it a winner. Honestly, I wouldn't have minded the triathlon if it wasn't longer than most of the matches on the card. Say what you want about Mae Young, but she went through a table, and took an olympic slam. Considering her age, I bow down to her simply because her ass looks better than mine, LMAO! Another thing that surprised me, the masochist that I am, is the HIAC.
Like many of you, I was ready to bury it. But, a few minutes into it, I found myself interested just to see who bled the most (HHH). I'll be honest, with the tools out there, Nash was really being creative, so was HHH. That hammer shot looked HURTY! I got a big CZW/ECW vibe from this match, and well, I may be revoking my wiener status for saying this, but... It was damn fun. Flair/Michaels was good too. I know Christian's match should've been longer. One more thing. Steiner's leap towards Test (and subsequent tripping), highlight of the night, LOL!

I said before the PPV that it looked like to me that Christian might be getting the Honky Tonk treatment, and this result seems to confirm it. You have explained very well how this angle is suppose to generate heat. Honky Tonk Man is very well known for doing this, but this method has been used by Ric Flair as well (there's no telling how many times Ric Flair got himself DQ'd to retain his title over his career).
The way this was built, putting Booker T over would have been the wrong thing to do, it would have done nothing for him. There was only two ways to go, Booker win by DQ or Christian win by blatantly cheating. I think the DQ was the way to go as far as generating heat on Christian. But for this to work properly, they will need to keep the title on Christian for several months.
Everything that is wrong in this world can be blamed on Freddie Prinze Jr.

Well, the plan is for them to start feuding with the Dudley Boyz, so get ready for some REAL classics.
And, don't worry, NO ONE thinks thy're talented enough. Dupre is alright, as he's been slowly improving, and he's only 19, so he's got plenty of time. But Grenier is absolutley HORRENDOUS! He doesn't have a clue as to what he's doing in the ring, and the fact that he actually made it to the WWE and guys like Christopher Daniels, Lo-Ki, and Michael Modest DIDN'T is quite scary.
Remember when WWF treated RVD like the main-event star he is?
One other thought.... the burping contest. I don't think the folks in WWE got enough credit for that one. Despite what some of the smarks may think, Austin-Bischoff was waaaaaaaay better than the Steamboat-Flair burping contest from '89 that everyone calls a ***** classic.
Speaking of the absurd burping contest, as always, my friend had to call the cable company since if we order the PPV digitally, it never goes through. And the very first thing we hear as the PPV comes on: a Bischoff burp.
Hey, who was that guy that threw Bischoff back out of the crowd anyway?

I can see it now.

What is Mattitude? Utilizing the belief system and work ethic (Mattributes) of THE Matt Hardy to create a better life for yourself by fulfilling your goals and dreams. Mattitude is a quality that can help anyone -- regardless of background or past -- to achieve success. You just have to make it a lifestyle, a mindset, a religion. Mattitude, is something that can not be taught or learned. Mattitude is something that burns within. In the ring, Mattitude is the intangible, the x-factor, that gives me an advantage over everyone else.
At least the title was telling. The PPV was Bad and it was Bloody(awful). There was just way too much bad on this PPV, but the big goat horns has to go to Austin/Bischoff, that ruined the PPV for me. And I have on a weekly bases put the Austin/Bischoff antics as a positive on Raw, but the overdone it and soured me on both of them. The Redneck Triathlon did a tone for me not to care for either guy.
-Nowinski/Mack vs. Dudley Boyz- So just out of a sudden D-von is offended by getting the tables because Teddy said so. The heel team did nothing to stand out in one/their first PPV opportunity. Dudleyz were pretty generic in their offense. Strange the match went over 6 minutes and nothing really memorable.
-Steiner vs. Test- This match had memorable moments at least. First 2 seconds the Steiner trip was "memorable". Man this should have been the first match, it would be a perfect start to this PPV. A very scary belly to belly from Steiner to Test that looked like an inch away from being something really bad. I guess some credit goes because after the opening slip the match easily could have gone off the rails but it stayed somewhat in control... magicdot: I also did notice an odd/uncomfortable look Stacy's face towards Steiner at the end of the match. I didn't see what happened but all of a sudden she had the look of "Why the f*ck did you do that" towards Steiner
-Booker T vs. Christian- They dropped Christians Opera song Nooo. This match was good, great scissors kick by Booker on Christian with his neck on the top rope. Gawd the ending was stupid and made the entire match seem relatively pointless.
-La Resistance vs. RVD/Kane- Okay I didn't think this match was as bad as everyone else did. Was it good, No. Was it even PPV worthy entertainment, Well NO. (wait I'm suppose to be defending this LoL). I don't think it was bad, but it did have a feel of a top of the 2nd hour Raw match... Lot of that tonight, good but few brought that extra PPV umfff that you expect. Oh by the way I see APA confronting the Frenchies tonight, they are STILL in Texas you know, oh joy.
-Jericho vs. Goldberg- Goldberg the babyface has had 2 PPV matches and both matches had the crowd chanting the opponents name and stating that Goldberg Sux. Who says Linda McMahon isn't in touch with wrestling LoL... Great spot of Goldberg missing the spear outside the ring and crashing through the barrier. I'll give the oaf his due he did a great job selling his shoulder so much so that I thought the injury was legit! Jericho did an amazing job in this match making it entertaining. Way better then I expected. Pleasant surprise of the night... Goldberg calm down their just fans, don't need to start a scene. Gawd this guy is dumb.
-Flair vs. Michaels- I thought this was very good, they did some good basic techniques which JR says the Young kids in the back should learn a lesson. Of course the second he says that Shawn breaks out the table (Why do the born again Christians always have to get the tables. huh?Huh?) and does a dangerous yet beautiful looking twisting splash. Man did Flair sell that move, I was actually worried for his health when he was screaming in pain.. I didn't mind the ending too much, I was shocked that Flair won. I found myself enjoying and getting into this match
-HHH vs. Nash-I'm sorry, a slow, plodding match even with all the toys & the crimson mask stil can't mask that it was a slow and plodding match. The hammer blow was impressive, unfortunately it happened in the first 5 minutes. I'm all for suspension of disbelief, but a full speed hammer shot to the skull is a finisher not a woozy hit. A titlebelt, chair, even a 2X4, I could somewhat believe it as a stun hit. But a FREAKIN HAMMER full speed to the dome, shouldn't be a early match hit... Some credit to HHH, he took some bumps early on, some credit to the bookers in compensate what's in the ring with as many toys as possible and did a decent job in building to the last 3 minutes, Props to Foley for taking the bump of the match off the apron to the cage. Match wasn't brutal, but it was boring for the first 15 minutes. Picked up to the finish. But I found myself more intersted in Foley then the actual wrestlers
-other stuff- Redneck Triathlon, you want to talk about what was brutal. This was brutal. I enjoyed the Eric/Austin schtick over the months on Raw. But this was just too much, too awful. That it soured me on their entire side story and I really don't care for either of the two anymore. They were good on Raw because it's usually quick or their setting up another storyline. Here it was Just Them. Taking up lame backstage skits and even worse TWO in-ring segments... I'm not even going to get into the details of the contest, there wasn't a funny one in the bunch and it took about half an hour in total. Great job in using your roster PPV split to give new talent an opportunity to shine.
It was just bad, none of the early card wrestlers(first 4 matches) stepped up any and seemed like matches you'll see on Raw, yes even the IC title, it was good but the screwy ending ruined it & the work wasn't good enough to make it good despite of the ending. The oldtimers stepped up, Jericho/Goldberg was very good. HITC was not good IMO... Is Hurricane ever going to be on a PPV? A 3 Hour Raw show only and still doesn't make the cut, that Galaxy Furnature Guy has gotten more PPV time then Hurricane (I'm not even the biggest HurriMark but come on!). What I am a mark of is women wrestling and not a single one on this show! They make it to a split PPV and much more times then not it come off as one of the good things of the PPV. Last couple of weeks it was the Hi-Lite of Raw. They might have brought a much change of pace to the show especially in the first 4 matches.
cause there's limits to our liberties. 'Least I hope and pray that there are, cause those liberal freaks go too far.
I'll crush all opposition to me And I'll make Ted Kennedy pay If he fights back, I'll say that he's gay
The Hell In A Cell match was damn good, and I wanted to hate it. HHH brought the ultraviolence, Foley busted out Mr. Socko and Nash didn't fuck anything up (which is the most you can hope for). And, much like HHH's fued with Steiner, he can go over Chickenlegs all he wants.
Goldberg sucks! Goldberg sucks! Goldberg sucks! Listen to the crowd, Vince. If people wanted to watch Bill Goldberg squash the entire roster, Kevin Nash main event and Scott Steiner exist, you wouldn't be running unopposed on Monday nights.
That Redneck Triathlon though... I'm glad I went to the free Sonic Youth show last night so I could fast-forward through it this morning. A burping contest? And I paid to watch that? Please... (I do have a soft spot for the way Mae Young struts around like she's the sexiest woman on the planet, and Bischoff's uber-realistic lip-synching was funny, but this ate up *way* too much time with *way* too little payoff.)
The La Resistance face turn before the match was suprising. Oh, really? Well, that's how I took it.
Most of the show featured decent to good matches with lousy finishes that seemed to come out of nowhere. It wasn't great by any means, but a hell of a lot better than I think we expected a RAW only PPV to have been a month ago.
(Of course, if they give us an Angle-Lesnar rematch, something amusing with Mr. America and a US Title tournament with all the upper-midcarders, Vengeance *should* blow this out of the water.)
Christian's theme is now just...so generic. It sounds like every other bland metal riff they use for every other wrestler. But then again I've been upset ever since they dropped the golden shower upon his entrance.
HITC wasn't bad, it was just boring. I found myself starting to nod off more than once.
Well...I agree with that. I guess they are assuming that by 2004 they will have the wrestling end of the product fixed. The question I have is which network will pick this up? I assume that it has to be a Viacom network.
