I know I made a thread just yesterday, but...

Report from 1Bob:

John Coggeshall, who wrestled for Main Event Wrestling in Rhode Island, lost consciousness during a match on Saturday night and passed away Sunday evening.

Coggeshall wrestled as "Dr Destruction" and was one of the founders of Main Event Wrestling, a group that started out as a backyard federation but more recently ran charity shows in the Rhode Island area.

Coggeshall was involved in a spot where another wrestler, 19 year old Matthew Gilbert, jumped from the ropes and landed on him. Both men fell to the mat and landed on another wrestler, 18 year old Jeremy Kappler. The other two men reportedly began to get up and continue the match, but noticed Coggeshall wasn't moving. Coggeshall was unresponsive when police and rescue crew arrived and he was transported to Rhode Island Hospital.

No cause of death has been announced, but doctors told his family that he had died of cardiac arrest, according to a report in The Newport Daily News.

John Coggeshall was 34 years old and was a computer programmer and part time wrestler.

I know that he was a backyard-wrestler and backyard-wrestling is wrong, but it's still saddening that he died, especially since he didn't do any harm to anyone except himself and those that were willing to take it. RIP John. Pity pity.

Don't backyard.

The only thing we can hope for now is that people take note of this incident and learn from it.

RIP, Mr. Coggeshall.

If indeed it is cardiac arrest I don't see what anyone could possibly learn from it. I mean, it's not like he died taking an idiotic bump and I doubt an Indy guy could afford to juice up to the point of stopping his heart.

Don't get me wrong, this is a tragic happening and my thoughts go out to his family and friends; I don't for a second mean to make light of this man's passing. All that said, though, with the information we have I just don't think this is one of those what a waste situations, like in many other cases of wrestler deaths.

I don't know if I just paid too much attention to scare stories I used to hear back in my more athletic days, but isn't it pretty unsafe to take steroids in a manner not prescribed? You wouldn't have to take them over a long period of time, just take too many over a shorter period.

Either way my best wishes go out to his family.

Sounds like he shouldn't have been wrestling without professional supervision or training. He probably blew up, and had a heart attack not from steroids but simply becasue he wasn't in very good physical condition and had very bad cardio. I can't imagine a 34 year old computer nerd being in even adequate physical shape. The point being it was a waste, and he shouldn't have been doing backyard wrestling.

Non the less, rest in peace Backyard Wrestler.

Understood, but note the bold-faced text in the prior quote. Maybe having a human body colliding with his from up-high triggered the fatal event?

It was a charity show at an Elks Club, so it wasn't exactly backyard wrestling at this point. A question I have is why did they transport him to RI Hospital. I've driven Newport to Providence minimum 700 times in my life, and its at best a half hour ride. Now, personally I wouldn't go to Newport Hospital with a hangnail out of fear of mis-diagnosis/death, but why would the EMT's bypass a hospital 5 minutes away?

I want you to know, I agree with everything I just said.

Not to be nitpicky but Saturn IS on the active roster, just not on the big shows, however you're right...just another case of a wrestling company squandering a potential gold mine.
