I found this on Slam wrestling in an article by TJ Madigan about all the talent the WWE has lost lately. The possible Backlash spoiler pertains to HHH and Benoit. I don't know what Madigan's sources are, but this is what he says:

"Triple H is also Hollywood-bound, preparing to take a leave of absence after his ladder match with Chris Benoit in Edmonton next month."

If that's true, then that match could be highlight in the careers of both men. The pops, the heat, the creative possibilities of a ladder match with two talented workers. Unvelievable! And it also means Benoit will no doubt retain the title.

You can read the whole article here:

If this match happens, I think it is a tremendous decision by WWE. Though Benoit has climbed to the top of the mountain, he still needs to show fans that he can stay there. 1 on 1 ladder matches have a history of being a defining moment in a wrestler career and a stepping stone to greater things, ie HBK/Razor and HHH/Rock. Its a shame that HBK wouldn't be in HHH's place in this match however, as the match would have a LOT more impact on Benoit's career as far as history goes. But, HBK may be moving to SD, and HHH is more deserving of a rematch as the former champion.
So, Benoit wins, HHH is out to do some filming in Hollywood, I am predicting a stretcher job for HHH at Backlash. Canadian Crippler indeed

Right, but those were superstar-making matches, this is between two established wrestlers. I don't think this is going to be on the importance level of those matches, but more in line with, say, the Benoit-Jericho ladder match, which was excellent. Hopefully after it's over with WWE puts the match over heavily on TV, which is what's been missing from a lot of things like this. The two you listed and the Edge/Christian-Hardys match were big partly because they TOLD people they were big. You've got to make important things at a PPV out to be important on TV because most of your audience didn't see the PPV. If they just have this match, Benoit wins, and they don't make anything of it on TV, it's just a dangerous match for a guy with neck problems and a guy who's had a string of injuries the last few years.

I don't know about that, HHH is pretty historically relevant at this point with his eight world titles and the fact that he *is* the top heel of the last - jeez, almost five years. Whether or not it's been enjoyable is another question, but he's got his spot, and it's probably above Michaels since there was a time HHH drew.

I read about that ladder match at Backlash as well, BUT as a WM XX rematch between Benoit and Triple H AND Michaels!

Don't go assuming Benoit would win in Edmonton...Vince loves to make wrestlers lose in front of their home crowd...

Michaels is out, trying to heal the injury he also had during the WMXX match.

Anyway, $10 says Benoit wins via the Sharpshooter just to get the cheap Hitman pop in Edmonton.

Do the really need to do a ladder match between a guy who had major neck surgery and a guy with a history of being banged up since having a major leg injury?

Also, the cynic in me says that HHH doesn't have to get pinned in a ladder match. Come to think of it, I may have just answered my own question.

"I don't know what Madigan's sources are"

Just the Observer, it seems. The Observer said HHH/Benoit ladder match, the Torch said threeway ladder rematch.

"that match could be highlight in the careers of both men"

I dunno about Hunter in a ladder match. He'll still take a ton of punishment, of course.

Well where was Benoit before he went to WWF/E? Just a reminder, Chris Benoit has jobbed in his hometown of Edmonton before. Remember his world title match with Austin in Edmonton that was on Smackdown? Austin pinned Benoit in that match.

Allow me to clarify, Vince doesn't seem to like the WCW wrestlers that came to WWE as a result of the buyout.
Things have taken a turn for the better as of late though, with both the main champs being ex-WCW/ECW guys.

Hahaha, I really wasn't paying attention.
I still think Benoit will pull out a Sharpshooter at some point though, it's an easy pop for the face.

Actually, I seem to remember them working the Canadian rounds last summer for a couple weeks only to see every Canadian wrestler lose. Benoit, Trish, Venis, Lance...I think Benoit lost a squash matched against Big Show in Nova Scotia. Anyway, I don't remember it entirely, but that was the gripe last year. You've also got British Bulldog losing the Euro title to HBK in Manchester in 1997.

Point is, Vince has no problem having a high profile hometown hero lose a match just so he can SWERVE the audience. The rationale is that it sets up the rematch so when they blow through town again the hometown guy can get the win back and get a bigger pop or something.

What is this business all about of him now hailing from Atlanta? I didn't see Raw- was it just a mistake on the announcers part or did the WWE deliberately want it changed?

A Benoit/HHH ladder match would be pretty good- if HHH is prepared to take some big bumps- which I kinda doubt. I'll imagine he'd bleed quite a lot though as said earlier in the post.

Atlanta's in Denmark now?

I've read reports that the triple threat at WMXX was originally scheduled to be a ladder match, but obviously that got changed. Did this have to do with HBK's condition? Assuming the reports of the ME at Backlash being a ladder match with Benoit and HHH, obviously someone thinks these two guys can handle a ladder match, and I know HBK's been feeling a bit roughed up lately and he does have a pretty bad lower back.

I get the feeling that someone really wants a ladder match. Anyone know how many ladder matches Benoits been in? How many ladder matches had HHH done?

Just counting the last few years:

Benoit- Did the two ladder matches in two nights versus Jarrett on/the night after Starrcade 1999, fought Jericho for the IC Title at RR 01 and wrestled in the TLC 3 match on Smackdown during his run with Jericho as tag champions.

HHH- Beat the Rock in a ladder match at SSlam 1998, and the 3rd fall of the 3 Falls of Hell match at Armageddon was a ladder match (albeit the latter lasted about 4 minutes).
