I was hoping someone would have bought one of these fancy thingamabobbies by now. I am very interested in getting one, but there's that whole $250 thing, and I am still paying off my Powerbook, my iPod, my Treo . . .

So, for those of you who have gotten one, what do you think? Is it everything we've been promised and more?

I got one. I got 2 dead pixels on the screen too. =\

In my opinion, it's not worth the $250. I had to get one because, well, that's just the kind of guy that I am. I really needed to play that new Metal Gear Acid game.

It comes with a 32mb memory stick. My iPod has a 20gig capacity. Guess which one I'll be using to listen to MP3s.

When it comes to games, there actually isn't anything I really want for it. I HAD to get the new Metal Gear and Mercury looks really cool as well, but I think the DS has a lot more coming out for it than the PSP does.

However, I have to admit that the screen looks REALLY nice. I uploaded the Braveheart WM21 trailer to the memory stick and it looks AMAZING. ^_^;

Amazing.

I'm not gonna buy UMD movies when I could buy DVDs though, know what I mean?

The speakers on the system aren't that good either, I guess that's why they packed in headphones.

I still wish the Memory Stick they packed in with it was bigger. =\

Exactly. How much are they going to be priceing UMD movies at? If they release just barebones copies for ten bucks, I could probably justify buying a couple to have for trips and such, but if they're going to be the same as a regular DVD, I'll wait till they release a big enough memory stick to encode an MPEG-4 to and watch a movie off of that.

I *believe* you can purchase upwards of 2 Gig sticks, but they're pretty pricy, IIRC.

This thread (forums.gaming-age.com) pretty much has all of the info you might be looking for on the PSP. As for me-I'm waiting for either a price drop,or Madden-whichever comes first.

This probably should be a seperate thread, but oh well.

Why are people still buying handheld consoles? Really! When the Gameboy came out and the Gamegear soon after, wasn't the idea that kids could play them on the train or in the car. Isn't that the idea? I mean, why would you want to disengage from the world even more. At least you can interact with others when playing a game on a TV screen.
But with a handheld you shove it in your face!

I guess my question is, when do you play your PSP or DS? Are you on a bus or in an airplane? Or are you at your home, where you could be doing something else? I'm not saying read a book(not that you shouldn't be, I'm working through Mask of Command right now, definate recommendation), but you could be playing a game on your big screen.

There is a novelty to playing Super Mario 64 on a tiny handheld screen, but is it really necessary? I just think 250 is a bit high.

While I must admit it has a slick design and good third party support, over time the PSP is just going to eat your entire wallet out.
PSP (pack) - $250
DS - $150
PSP Games - $50
DS - $30-40
...Now that's all fine and dandy and I'm sure everyone knows that information...But when it comes down to it the memory "sticks" are really what kills ya...
A 1gig memory stick is currently priced at a good $160.00...
Please people, go out and buy yourself a 20gig iPod or a portable DVD player. For those of you who are thinking about putting some nice movies on your memory stick...One movie alone is usually roughly around 700mb...That's pretty much your entire $160 dollars. And I'm sure these "sticks" are going to get lost very quickly. They are smaller than your average potato chip.

I'm sorry, don't care how many songs 1gig can hold...160 dollars for a memory stick is insane. Ahh...and yes let's be fair...the 160 dollar variety is not the only memory stick Sony has produced. There is a smaller 128mb running at $49.99...But really, add these things up over time and you're going to end up spending a hell of a lot on these little "sticks." Especially when you consider, the DS doesn't even require a memory card...No, it can't hold movies or music, but for God's sake go out and buy yourself an iPod with that money son.

The way I figure it, it's just like buying another console, and thus, is worth what they're charging. I'd never use it for movies-unless I'm going on a long trip-but I'd definitely use it to watch TV shows on the go. And I wouldn't bother with music, because I've already got two iPods. But it's the only handheld I've ever considered buying, and if they can get a decent version of Madden on there, they won't be able to keep the things in stock.

I don't know about the PSP, but the Gameboy Advance can connect to three other GBAs so you can play multiplayer, and the DS has wireless support as well. Looks pretty good for those "Gamers on the go" or whatever.

In my experience, the original Gameboy was ok for roadtrips - if there was only one. With just one in the car, the other people can keep the driver entertained. Switching off between levels was also a fun way to keep everyone entertained by passing the Gameboy around. But if there was more than one Gameboy, everybody usually ended up in their own little world and it completely killed the "group fun" of a road trip. Personally I think a plane or bus trip would be great fun playing DS or GBA multiplayer, but I'd ban them if it was a car trip. How fun would that be to have three of your friends concentrating on their GBAs while you're disconnected from them by virtue of being in the driver seat.

I don't see any need to blow money on a PSP (or a DS, for that matter) when I've already got a GBA... not to mention a PS2, GameCube, N64 and SNES.

Next system I get will be a PS3.

I bought a PSP. I really am enjoying the unit big time. I have used all of the features already actually. I put pictures on it and showed digital pics to my grandmother who doesn't have a PC, I showed a couple of movie and WM trailers to my neighbor who hadn't seen them, on the train today I listened to some new music I got. As far as the mem stick capacity, I never was one to get an iPod because I really didn't need to carry THAT much music with me. So 2-3 CDs is all I need. But with me having a 512MB mem stick, I can carry alot more along with pics and videos.

Not to mention, I have put several hours of play time in Lumines and Ridge Racers. I am loving those games. The KILLER APP has not been released for the PSP yet. I am thinking it will be Grand Theft Auto. I think it comes out in May. Not trying to convince anyone to buy one, but just relaying my positive experiences with it just in a few days.

Looks like Guru's earlier assessment that the PSP would be used for porn was right on (wired.com). Good call!

I wonder how far we are away from having something that does everything. I'm talking video games, play DVDs, palm pilot, ipod, and even a cell phone; basically a hand-held PC. I hope this is where all these new "thingamabobbies" are leading up to.

I love my PSP. It's the coolest system I've ever played.

I really liked the SpiderMan 2 IUMD movie...and the game I picked up with it (THUG2) plays remarkably well.

The Memory Stick idea was brilliant: It's nice to know that I can transport my saved games anywhere. I wonder why something like that wasn't released or set up for other portable game systems.

My only complaint is the battery life...but that's not a huge problem.
