Well that's one way for Sin Cara to have better matches - sign his best opponent.

Cubsfan has planty of details so go read his stuff now or wait for him to post in this thread.

The plan was for him to lose his mask to La Mascara at June 17th’s Jucio Final, but plans may change as this news gets out. Multiple sources have confirmed to me both Averno’s signing and his imminent mask loss.

WWE has been unhappy with Sin Cara’s matches so far. Atypically, they’ve sought to resolve this by bringing in more agreeable opponents for him to work with. The story I was told is WWE went to Sin Cara and asked him that if he could work with anyone in the world, who would he most like to work with. Obviously, he picked his long time rival (and probably close friend) Averno. WWE earlier had Averno in for a tryout last October, the same tryout Mistico and Diamante were at (and which Durango Kid helped set up), but decided not to sign him at that time. Things have changed, and Averno secretly signed with WWE during their last tour of Mexico.

Based on this, I don't think any of us should get too attached to him. He'll probably be around about as long as Carlito's old bodyguard, Jesus, was.

Would they be going through this extra effort if Sin Cara wasn't Hunter's first big signing?

I think Rey being on his last legs has something to do with it as well. I would expect that if his merchandise is selling then they may have decided to do this. Personally, if this is the best HHH can come up with I am a little concerned. Yet this guy was supposed to be a God in Mexico, so I am wondering if its the WWE style is not blending well with him or people overvalue wrestlers, because they are foreign.

I think it's mostly Mistico being Hunter's pet project, but given all their success in Mexico, it does make sense to have an authentic Mexican luchador on the roster for when they tour the country.

Can we trust the guy who reported this? I dunno. For one, that doesn't look like a real name at all!

Would they be going through this extra effort if Sin Cara wasn't Hunter's first big signing?

No way. They wouldn't be going thru any effort, extra or otherwise.

I'm not sure this is a bad thing, because they way they've introduced other new talent has largely led to the new talent has not worked out well for anyone. We've sort gotten to the point where WWE putting people in the best situation for them to succeed is unlikely decision. If Averno is getting $100K, I'd be mildly shocked, and Sin Cara making it is worth a many multiples of that to the company.

Yet this guy was supposed to be a God in Mexico, so I am wondering if its the WWE style is not blending well with him or people overvalue wrestlers, because they are foreign.

It could be the people in the company are not happy he's getting special treatment and are acting out on that. It very much could be that. Sin Cara has been fine->good with Bryan and Kidd (and really Primo except for the slip), not so good with other people.

Rey sells a crazy amount of merchandise. If they could have two Reys, they probably would sell two times a crazy amount of merchandise. That's a good deal! If they're going to have two brands, they might as well have two masked superheroes. Sin Cara is not here to be the replacement Rey, he's there to be the Rey On The Other Brand; if and when Rey retires, they surely will dip into Mexico to find another guy. I'm sure they're already looking. (More than sure.)

My big fear for Averno is they'll do this program, and then they'll have absolutely nothing for him. Tyson Kidd is really good, works the style everyone else does there, and is at least an inch (and probably more taller), and they have absolutely nothing for the poor guy. But maybe Averno will get over, or be afforded the same special consideration.

Speaking of Tyson - I do not think it's coincidental that Armando Alejandro Estrada returned on Superstars. A manager is about to be very helpful.

But this is a paradox, my fine feathered lotjx. Mexicans can't overvalue a Mexican for being foreign, and he was objectively a superduperstar there. That's why WWE signed him -- they didn't pick El Hijo de Mask y Flipz #7 at random to try to make another Hispanic star. They got the #1 Hispanic star because he was a charismatic drawing card in Mexico and hoped he could carry that over to a new audience.

TBF it's gotta be pretty difficult to go straight from lucha to WWE main roster. Del Rio spent a year in developmental and he still didn't seem to understand how he was 'supposed' to sell or bump that well when he started on Smackdown.

I think a big part of the problem isn't just Sin Cara's matches, it's also how they've been packaging him. They've been trying to sell us "mysterious," and it's just not that engaging. They probably should have been going with "exciting." The slow music, the dim lights, they just kill my enthusiasm, and it seems like it might be having a negative effect on the live crowds as well.

I thought Michael Hayes was managing Kidd already.

The whole Sin Cara thing feels like the Light Heavyweight days all over again. Taka et al did some great moves, but at the end of the day the WWE had no idea how to present and package the product.

Rey was a luxuary. He learned the American style long before he showed up in the WWE Universe.

Us knowing him and him knowing us went along ways. I 'm pretty sure WWE is still 0 fer ever at this type of thing.

As a side note someone said Estrada is back ... the guy should have never left

Week 1: Successful managing. Week 2: Hayes slapped Kidd and they broke up. Angle of the year.

Damn. And I thought The Freebird Tyson Kidd had a nice ring to it.

When Sin Cara was signed, I worried he'd be treated as Ultimo Dragon had: rousing fanfare until it was determined he didn't "get it." The WWE is only going to stumble if they continue to force a style onto top names from other territories. But it looks like Sin Cara is hitting all the usual WWE match notes: he has a stong start, gets caught in a cheat move, eats some heel offense, comes back, trades pins, and hits the big move. And he has a BIG big move. Are they calling him a dud so soon? When his big angle so far is against Chavo?

This. And hey, who knows, maybe it'll be Averno that takes like a duck to water in the WWE style and ends up being the bigger star of the two. Remember Taka and Sasuke in 1997?

Basically, this is the most important thing to note. Rey had almost ten years of American wrestling under his belt before he ever set foot in a WWE ring. He was on When Worlds Collide, and that was eons ago. Rey is also an American who speaks English. Sin Cara cannot do a promo, so I'm not sure how anyone could fault him for doing what he's good at. Their big problem is going to come when he's got to work with the other 97 percent of the roster who cannot hang in that style.

Shitty, half, maybe quarter-assed recap this week. I really wanted to do a full one, but I've got way, way, way too much work on my plate. There probably won't be anything at all from me next week.
