There was nothing magical about the 1996 King of the Ring PPV. Austin was going to be a huge star no matter which match started it off. Triple H is in no way an idiot, so I'm sure with all he knows about the wrestling business he realizes that him winning the 1996 one wouldn't have ended any differently than the 1997 one did.

I'm going to have to disagree on this one. Remember, going into KOTR '96, Austin was coming off losing a feud to Savio Vega and was borderline irrelevant in the grand schemes of the company. For the previous 2 years, Austin had Col. Parker and Dibiase as mouthpieces, so his mic skills weren't legendary at the time. I mean, that Austin 3:16 comment after KOTR did absolutely nothing in helping Austin's career. Remember back to that time period, the future of the WWF/E was Marc Mero, who was getting a giant push, and the incoming Mark Henry was viewed with such confidence that Vince gave him a ten year contract (by my estimations, its down to almost 3 1/2 years left on the biggest dud of a contract given to a person not named Pervis Ellison.)
On a side note, perhaps its time to take away the moniker the World's Smartest Man from the 'Genius' Lanny Poffo, and give it to Mark Henry, as he somehow got ten guaranteed years out of Vince at the downtime of the company without working a match.

Oh, I agree with you that Austin wasn't doing anything at the time, but that was when he was still messing around with "The Ringmaster" personna and in the process of changing his character. With or without the King of the Ring, once he found his place as "Stone Cold", I don't think there's anything that would have stopped a snowball of fan support. There's something some people have that just makes them stars. When Shawn Michaels became a star, it wasn't because of his ladder match with Razor, it was because he had it in him and it just happened to show at that show. Hulk Hogan also would have made it with or without Andre "passing the torch", or whatever one match people tend to look to as the turning point.

I also agree with you about Mark Henry. It almost makes me want to go for an Olympic Medal, only to try to lift the weights, yell out "OW! MY BACK!" and then call up Titan Towers and ask to talk to Vince.

ps. Sorry I quoted so much, I don't know how to take out parts of quotes without risking screwing up the fonts for the rest of the page...

Besides the newsboards "reporting" of the so called heat between Austin-HHH and all of the speculation by the IWC there's been no documentation of this.

That's it... and that's ALL.

I wouldn't go as far as best friends, but they are good friends. When Jericho was on OTR, he mentioned it and Rocky mentioned it in his Rolling Stone interview. When Confidential had Fozzy on, you could also tell from their conversation that they were pretty tight. I agree that I wouldn't have expected them to be friends, but for some reason I find the fact that they are just cool as hell
