| #1 Posted on 17.9.02 0343.58 | "The likelihood of Steve Austin returning to WWE anytime soon seems to be very small. Even though Jim Ross did leave the possibility open in a recent Ross Report, sources close to Austin feel the burial on TV was too much.
Interesting, Austin is good friends with Bill Goldberg, and there are rumors that the two might be creating their own new promotion. They were often heard talking about promoting a head to head match against one another, outside of WWE or WCW.
Insiders believe that a combination of Austin and Goldberg could be enough of a one-two punch to garner interest from TV networks for a potential broadcast deal.
Austin has reportedly been working with a legal team to check out his WWE contract, and how he could work on a new promotion. Many feel WWE contracts are legally flawed, and someone of the power and money of Austin could challenge the no-compete clause."

OK, wow! I guess to start with:
Of course this could be total bunk, this being internet NEWZ and all. Frankly it reeks of sweaty fanboy fantasy. But it has been my experience that 411wrestling's news have always been as reliable as internet reporting gets.
So let us assume this is true. Say Austin can wiggle out of his contract and a year from now he and Goldberg actually create a start-up promotion.
Could they get a TV deal on a decent network? Wrestling has cooled off big time, will they be viewed as relics who no longer merit attention or still ratings grabbers?
Hope it's true!

It'll be the Austin and Goldberg show, with the rest of the entire roster made to look like chumpstains. I doubt this is true, and I actually hope that it isn't. And this is coming from someone who has, since the WCW sale, been patiently waiting for a good alternative to WWE programming. “Now put that thing back where it came from or so help me-- Oh, hey! | #4 Posted on 17.9.02 0902.56 | I put as much credibility in this promotion actually forming and surving for longer than a week as I did in the Hogan promotion. If by some chance Austin gets out of his contract, they still need to come up with someone with deep pockets to finance the organization. Besides an extremely weak economy being the worst time to find someone to fund a historically money losing business, one of your front men is still facing domestic abuse charges. This might just be something Austin leaked in order to cause Vince to think about allowing his return so that the paychecks start coming in again.

dead. Dead. Dead. dead. dead. Who knows?
There's been plenty of people trying to get something going, but they've never really done much.
Do Austin and Goldberg possess the starpower to get it going? Sure, they do...but would anyone really care? Concerning Austin's recent departure from Vince and Company, I don't think I'd really get into his stuff.
Anyhow, that's my two cents...

| #7 Posted on 17.9.02 1116.40 | I think the better idea would be for the two to both go to the same non-WWE fed. Adding Goldberg and Stone Cold to one of the weak alternatives out there could really help that company out. Only problem is who can afford Godlberg and Austin, or even one of them.
We should all put our money together and star our own fed. I've got about 300 dollars....

I don't see why Austin would want to start his own promotion. Think about it, right now he's getting paid to sit around, watch tv, work out, hunt and drink beer. What more could a bionic redneck ask for?

I never pegged Austin as having any kind of relationship w/ Goldberg, seeing how, by most accounts, Goldberg doesn't really respect the business & is only in it for the money.

Two Egos that big, would they be able to decide who comes out on top without a useless non-finish of some sort?
Of course, I guess if they were to do a one-off PPV with one match, they could go ahead and do the non-finish knowing they just grabbed up whatever money they could off of one PPV. If it was a whole promotion, that'd be another story...

If they had a promtion, they'd probably decide to team up and beat everyone else in the company in a huge 8 team battle royal or something.

| #16 Posted on 17.9.02 2113.05 | The overall report smells of bullshit. I seriously doubt Austin and Goldberg are talking about starting their own promotion.
I do think that it would be interesting if Austin tried to get out of his contract (Is he even getting paid?). I have no idea where he'd go though as he's not in good with Jarrett and there's no point in Japan as he SHOULD be financially set.
If we ever see Austin in a ring again it will most likely be in the WWE. Although he may have to much pride to even do that, which is fine. He's got a great legacy.
It will be interesting years from now how the WWE looks upon those years if the two never reconcile. Most likely The Rock and Triple H will get all the props, while guys that got sick of the BS ie Austin and Foley get written out of WWE history ala Samartino.

| #18 Posted on 18.9.02 0354.34 | I believe that Austin isn't getting paid is normal salary, but they DO have to pay him his merchandising fees. Merchandising is where the big money lies anyway. Of course, the WWE could just stop offering that stuff (and I'm sure have, for the most part), but I bet they at least got rid of their backlog beforehand. Of course, I'm not sure about any of that, given that I'm about as much of a wrestling insider as Mark Madden is these days. :)

| #19 Posted on 18.9.02 0415.40 | So my question is...how much star power does Bill Goldberg really have? Sure, he's recognizable. Yes, there are people who would buy a show for the novelty, that sick, sadistic novelty of seeing him. The question is, would they buy a second show? Remember, WCW had his star power from 98 on (I know he debuted earlier, don't correct me, but he didn't get a much attention until 98) and they didn't exactly thrive. He's shown that he's unreliable, uninteresting in the ring (sure, he was fun at first, but do you think a fan will buy a second show after seeing that he's the same old Goldberg in the first?), and, to top it all of, he's dangerous! Bret Hart's career? Huh?
I dunno, someone said to me at work today that WWE will be back on top when they sign Goldberg. I asked her how many episodes of Nitro she watched after '98, and she could count them on one hand; she only watched when they came to town.
I'm just saying that while people remember the name, the man has no real staying power at this point. Wrestling fans will get sick of him quickly, and mainstream culture only cared about him when wrestling was booming.
Yeah.

How about the middle ground - a one-shot Austin-Goldberg match as the headliner of a NWA-TNA PPV? It would give NWA-TNA a boost, and make Vince doubly furious - not only would it be a match he wanted and didn't get, it would be the *Jarretts* getting the match.
