The WWE used to have killer production values. Modern TV sports production was heavily influenced by the WWE's revolutionary use of graphics, music, et al. (see the NFL on FOX).

I know that the story lines and the wrestling are the things that really drive the show, but they haven't upgraded their look since 1999. I know budgetary concerns had them cut back on pyro, etc. But when compared to what PRIDE is doing on these Super Satiama Arena shows, the WWE ends up looking like ECW at the Elks Lodge.

I'm totally blown away by the look of these Pride shows.

How right you are. PRIDE has been blowing WWE out of the water in terms of creative production for quite some time. K-1 also was very good with production but I haven't watched the shows recently.

Nog's Jesus Entrance at Saitama Super Arena was awe inspiring. Could you imagine something like that for The Undertaker?

PRIDE also has better graphics and usually better music choices for video packages and entrances.

Raven of all people wrote a column a while ago on how somebody needs to come along and change the look of pro-wrestling. It needs to be updated. WWE certainly has the money and resources to update. The whole presentation and format is stale.

PRIDE does 12-14 shows a year.

WWE does over a hundred.

Won't happen.

They've changed sets before. It doesn't cost a lot of money to change camera angles and graphics or come up with new concepts. What it probably would take is for them to hire replace some of their current production staff with people who have fresh concepts.

They used to be groundbreaking with stuff like that when they had competition so I don't think its a case of them having too many shows. Really its only 2 shows, not 100 because you use the same production for RAW and Smackdown every week.

Here's some pictures of Noguiera's PRIDE entrance:

what i like best of all from seeing those pics: no signs in the crowd. if you black out the crowd so that the ring is the main focus, there's no reason for signs. i think the crowd matters more to WWE than to Pride

I've never seen Pride so I guess I can't really comment on the comparison, but I feel that the WWE has good production values. They've been the same for a while in some cases, but if you look at sports on TV, they don't radically alter their production each year.

I'm a big NHB/MMA fan. pride does have great production values. It has a bigger feel. The entrance to the ring is big in itself. Maybe because it seems longer than the ones in the WWE. Plus the Titantron is a bit played out.

I agree that Pride's shows are awesome in their presentation, but as the 3rd post mentioned there is a tremendous difference in the number of shows each company does. One crew, no matter how good they are, traveling all over the country every week to put the shows together is different than Pride having months and months of set up time for one show and then not having to put it all back in the trucks for a show the next night that could be hundreds of miles away.

Also, there's a big difference in the size of the show itself. A Pride show in Saitama could really only be compared with Wrestlemania, or perhaps one of the other big 4 PPVs if done in a stadium setting. No Raw taping is going to look like the Pride Grand Prix.

I have felt that since Raw left USA, that the TNN broadcast has been less sharper. I don't know if its the feed or the amount of pyro, but it sometimes feel like I'm watching Raw in a haze. The camera work has been pretty shit too. They used to be able to get really good images and far away shots, but everything seems less focused and more in your face. I think the video department is fine ie the montages, but the live feeds on Raw needs a clean-up. of course, it could just be my feed.

I think the lack of far away shots is due to the WWF not wanting to show a half empty arena...

According to the Torch, it sounds like WWE had a new producer in charge last night. That may lead to some changes.

It would be nice if the WWE could incorporate effects of this quality into their Big 4 PPVs... or at least Wrestlemania.

I was completely blown away when they started using them during the second round of the GP...

Unfortunately, they cut out a lot of the extravagance in order to save money once they started hemorrhaging money a few years back...

You're correct - but WWE could at LEAST do something at the big 4 PPVs (if not more) so Wrestlemania isn't the only one with a unique setup every year.

Very good read indeed. I met him when he was first starting out (I always thought he was just starting out, anyway) when he was in UPW with John "Prototype" Cena here in Southern California a couple years ago.
