| #1 Posted on 14.7.04 1129.34 | Instant Rating: 7.29 | From ESPNOriginally posted by ESPN.com The struggling Astros fired manager Jimy Williams on Wednesday, replacing him with Phil Garner.
The Astros have called a 2 p.m. ET news conference to announce the move.
Williams' job security had been the subject of speculation for about a month, from right about the time Houston's surprising tailspin down the NL Central standings began.
Garner previously managed the Brewers and Tigers with a career record of 708-802. He has had one winning season, leading the Brewers to a 92-70 record in 1992, his rookie year as manager. He last managed the Tigers in 2002, losing the first six games of the season before getting fired.
I don't understand why you replace Williams with a guy in Garner who has one winning season in his life and has never sniffed playoffs...

What's disturbing about Bowling for Columbine and Fahrenheit 9/11 is that both are classic propaganda. Events are shown out of order, suggesting conspiracy by confusing audiences about the sequence of events; events are shown out of context, edited to create an appearance differing from actual events; scenes of horror are intermixed with scenes of normalcy, suggesting all is horror; viewers are given no way of knowing what is fact, what is opinion, and what is made up. - Noted Warmonger Greg Easterbrook

In all fairness, he managed the Tigers and the Brewers, neither of which were equipped to succeed in the years he was there. Payroll is one thing, personnel is another, and those teams had neither.
Although asking him to make up a 10 game gap with half the season left is asking a bit much, but it'll certainly be a change from Williams' approach.
That's right, I said it- I said the J-Word

And he does not manage a game well at all. The only thing he may do is light a fire under this team, but I don't think that works as well with a veteran Astros team as it might have with the Marlins last year.

Since they plan on blowing up the team after this season, I would doubt Valentine would leave Japan for that gig. Could happen, but doubtful.

Hey, c'mon! Garner's 1992 Brewers squad just needed a little more time at the end of the season, and they would've eventually caught Toronto for the AL East title. It would've been nearly a sweep in the ALCS vs. Oakland, who the Brew Crew OWNED that year, and we would've finally had the "Hank Aaron's Legacy on a Pole Match" (or "Loser Stays in Milwaukee") World Series: Brewers vs. Braves.
Star wipe, and...we're out. Thrillin' ain't easy.
