#5? #5? Al Horford? Brandon Wright? Corey Brewer? Nice players, but come on! The whole season was based on getting Durant or Oden! Keeping Rivers for the whole season!

I can't type anymore. I thought I got most of this out last night, but I obviously didn't. Simmons probably won't have a column today. He's probably drunk or dead.

It all makes sense now ... From 1957 (the year we drafted Russell/won our first championship) to 1986 (the Len Bias tragedy), the Celtics were the premiere team in professional basketball; with only a few exceptions (the year before we drafted Cowens, the year before we drafted Bird, etc) the team has been perennial favorites to win the championship, or at least go deep into the playoffs. Twenty nine years of being on top.

Now, the tables have turned ... since '86, it's been the exact opposite - perennial cellar dwellers with only a few exceptions (the run to the Eastern Conference finals with Pierce and Antoine, etc.). Sadly, it's going to take another 29 years to "even things out", cosmically speaking.

In other words, Celtics fans should be patient and wait until 2015 for the next Boston superstar to emerge ...

After having a day to reflect on this...

Would two-time national champion Joakim Noah at #5 really be so bad? Things could always be worse.

I havent been paying attention, but why is having the #5 pick in the NBA draft the end of the world again? Is this year's draft class really that bad???

I think it's "the #5 pick in the hands of Danny Ainge, where he has options instead of a slam dunk choice of Oden or Durant" that is the real issue. The draft class is actually one of the deepest ever according to those who decide that kind of thing. If you are a C's fan, how would you like the idea that there are all of these proven college guys in the top-15 of the class and Ainge might take the Chinese guy instead?

But Simmons is acting like the team is screwed for the next decade. I guess there's zero chance his team will suck and get a high draft choice in the next couple of years with a great talent available to them. Whatever. Boston fans sure are babies.

One blog wrote today that the Celtics losing the lottery is good for Simmons' gimmick. Hard to disagree.

See, I rather enjoy Simmons, if nothing, for the level of self-pity and self-absorption he goes into every time. He loves crying about all the tough times his Celtics went through when the Sox are in first place and the Pats are loaded to win another Super Bowl. It was the same even after the Pats won their first title - Boston's a baseball town and no amount of Pats winning will cure Sox fans blues, blah, blah blah.

Now he simply puts down the league if his team isn't winning: The NBA has sucked since the Pistons' Bad Boy days and the NFL has sucked the last two years. Gee, Bill, who was winning titles prior to those eras? Oh, right. He used to simply make me angry. But now I read just for the incredulity of his columns. Kinda amusing.

By the way, suggesting the Celtics were favored 'karmically' for the #1 or #2 pick after tanking the last half of the season is frickin' hilarious. Oh, trust me, the Celtics getting #5 was DEFINITELY a result of karma.

If Simmons is looking for a karmic reason the C's lost the lottery, here's a big one from his 3/14 blog posting. Behold the words of the Sports Gal:

My explanation {for picking Texas to win the NCAA title]: Bill is totally obsessed with this Kevin Durant guy and I've watched 5-6 Texas games. Well, I haven't exactly watched them -- I'm usually reading a magazine or something while Bill's watching them. But I have to admit, he's fun to watch and seems like a nice person. Even his mom seems sweet. So that's the only team I know and that's why I'm picking them.

The bigger problem is that Bill says we're moving back East if the Celtics pick Durant in the lottery. I wanted to move back East for two years and he wouldn't move back. ... Now I actually like living in California and we'd have to move back only if the Celtics get a specific basketball player? Isn't this grounds for divorce? At first, I thought Bill was joking, but he keeps saying, "I can't live 3,000 miles away if this guy is playing for the Celtics. I can't live 3,000 miles away if this guy is playing for the Celtics." Now I hope the Celtics lose the lottery. Sorry.

Look at your team Frosty. When have the Lakers won championships they had Mikan, Chamberlain, Kareem, Shaq. Put Kobe with Oden, and you might have been looking at being a year or 2 away from being in the Finals. Put Oden with Jefferson and Pierce, and the Celtics would have been a mid 40's win team next year, and potentially an upper-echelon team in the East after that. If San Antonio had Keith Van Horn as the #2 pick in '97, would they have become the dynasty they became, even with Robinson? Go back to '84: If Houston takes Jordan #1 and Portland can take the center in Olajuwon instead of Bowie #2, is there a Portland dynasty around Drexler/Olajuwon with Drexler considered a Top 10 all-time player while Jordan is considered the guy who could never get by Clyde? It was only year 2, but Bird didn't win without Parish. Dr. J never was able to get to the top of the mountain until Moses led the 76ers to the promised land.
If you can get the center, you can get a 7-10 year run as a top team. If history is an indicator, Portland will probably the team to beat in the West in the '09-'15 seasons, barring severe injuries.

I agree. Y'know, the indignation of Boston fans would mean a lot more to me if it wasn't coming from a city that had won four championships in the past six years, and also has a franchise that's won more NBA championships than any team in league history.

Hey, if it meant Indianapolis could have the Colts win three Super Bowls and have a major-league team win the World Series, I'd put up with having an average or below-average Pacers team. (Although recently I've become a huge Washington Nationals fan, and I live in Virginia now, so maybe that isn't the best way of putting it.)

I am not really indignant and I don't fall into the neat category you post here about "Boston fans."

My favorite teams in the three major sports. Hockey isn't major anymore.

Baseball: See signature below: KC Royals

Basketball: Boston Celtics

Football: New York Football Giants

Not a Boston homer. Just a Celtics fan who has been watching some lousy basketball for several years now.

One of the few things Ainge has done right is that, for the most part, he's got good players in the draft from where he picked. Jefferson (15th), Rondo (21st), and Gomes (50th) all made the All-Rookie teams in their respective years. My worry is this: if he can't get a good vet in return for #5 and holds onto it, it probably means Pierce gets traded before New Years Day 2008 if the C's haven't shown improvement next season

I ask you kindly not to lump all of us "Boston Fans" in with Simmons, thank you. Most of us are nowhere near as bad as he is. And trust me when I say that many Boston fans out here on the net have grown to dislike him. His writings over the past few years have become whiney, self-important, contradiction-filled, drivel. It's a shame really. I used to really be a big fan of his, but he's becoming the type of sportswriter he used to rail against.

Great trade for the Hawks. They're not a contender yet but adding Bibby can at least make them a winning team this season, which puts them safely into the playoffs. They could maybe even win a first round match up as long as they avoid the Pistons.
