Since the show ended in 2006, fans of Arrested Development -- the TV series IGN recently named the funniest ever -- have been hoping to see the much talked about film version of the beloved series come to fruition. Today, at a big Arrested Development reunion featuring the entire cast, along with series creator Mitch Hurwitz, there was a very surprising new bit of information: New Arrested Development TV episodes are part of the plan as well.
The discussion took place at The New Yorker Festival, and based off Huwitz's comments on stage, the official New Yorker Twitter feed, wrote, "Arrested Development coming back for one more TV season before movie." New York Times reporter Dave Itzkoff was also in attendance at the Q&A and tweeted, "Mitch Hurwitz says he plans limited Arrested Development series (9-10 eps, 1 character per ep) that would lead into movie."
Itzkoff's elaboration answers the question of how they would deal with the limited availability of certain cast members – Will Arnett, for instance, is starring in the new NBC sitcom Up All Night and wouldn't have the time to do a full season of Arrested Development. But he probably could take the time to star in a single episode catching up with Gob Bluth.
All of this is enough to get any AD fan salivating of course, but it's hard not to be wary… We've heard about the movie for years without it ever happening, and the fact is, Arrested Development, beloved though it may be, was not a hit TV show. So it remains to be seen if Hurwitz could get the backing to get a TV miniseries made, on top of a film we still hope truly comes to be.
Update: TMI or not, Will Arnett has also now tweeted, "I'm peeing with @batemanjason at the moment..and we can confirm that we are going to make new AD eps and a movie."

Mr. Hurwitz did not specify a studio for either the movie or television components, or a network that might broadcast the new episodes. The project, he said, “requires studios to work together that don’t typically work together, film and TV.”
AD ended just before the ascent of original cable programming. I figure somebody will be interested in a short-term one-time commitment. At worst Ron Howard can swing some kind of iTunes "come get some" thing. | BigDaddyLoco

The main hurdle I see is how are they going to draw that old fan base back while probably needing to draw in new fans as well.

I don't know if the ratings really matter anymore. They don't need to get picked up again. They just need to create the final chapter and then have it shown. From there, who cares if they recoup their budget or anything, it'll already exist.

I'd hope at least one episode would be about Annyong/Hel-lo.

I just hope they don't get pressured to make a movie that tries to cater to everybody like the first X-Files movie did. They might be able to slide on the episodes, but it always seems to get sticky when the movie guys get involved.
Don't get me wrong I'm all for more AD, but I am content with how they wrapped everything up. There's something romantic about picturing what always might have been.

Agreed. I'd love to see this, but I'm a bit nervous that they'll wreck what they had. Assuming this ever actually comes to pass, that is - I'll believe it's happening when the shows air and not before. | Moss

They do. For traditional TV, especially the broadcast networks, Nielsen is usually all that matters (except in rare cases like Shit My Dad Says that's cancelled when #1 in its timeslot). Take a show like No Ordinary Family- their iTunes, ABC.com and international numbers were all pretty good, but the Neilson numbers weren't high enough so it was gone.
It shouldn't be that way in in this era, but unless they do something untraditional like Netflix the TV execs will likely care about nothing else.

Although I am curious to see how this hypothetical AD airing on a regular cable network would do ratings-wise now that it has all those people who never watched it when it was on. Do they actually all sit down and watch as Nielsenlicious event viewing that retroactively sticks it to Skating With Celebrities, or are they only interested in talking about it on the internet? I would love for either Hulu or Netflix to get this rather than a broadcast/cable network. That would be terrific. |
