This guy has got to be the worst closer ever. He gave up 4 runs today, including a 3- run homer to some guy I never heard of.

If he's not the worst closer ever, he's definetly the worst big game closer ever. I can't even remember all the big games he has blown just with the Mets. I know he blew a bunch with the Orioles too. I'm convinced the Mets will never win a championship with him as the closer.

Where is Jesse Orosco when you need him? I know he's still playing somewhere.

Was today suddenly a "big game", then? Hey, I get as frustrated by Armando as the next guy, but there are only so many Marianos out there, and none of them are available (and most of them are hurt!) Seriously, who would you get who'd be any better?

And don't forget he was pitching for the third straight day.

As a die-hard Mets fan, I would agree with you strictly based on emotional reasons... but the statistics on Benitez say differently. Last season, he had the best appearances/save percentage in the entire league. He is a very consistent closer, but because of the nature of NY fans and the media spotlight that shines so brightly here, only his fuckups are noticed. Sad but true. And last I heard, Orosco was playing for the Dodgers. Memories of 86 make me love that guy.

Two things:

1 - I think Orosco is with the Padres (but Guru can clear that one).

2 - Benitez really isn't that bad; he'll blow 1 or 2 a year, but he's still pretty consistent. Deal with the 3 blown saves, and take the 40 solid ones.

The thing about Benitez is he will blow the 'momentum shift' games. The Atlanta games in September of 2001 are the perfect example, where he blows 2 game shift games down the stretch, turning a possible close race into season is over situations. Plus, he will blow 2 or 3 'non-save' situation leads a year as well.

Hey, I have no problem with the Mets having Benitez close their games, especially if he continues to give the Expos those lovely gift wrapped blown saves.

3-1 BABY!

I was going to point out his save percentage last year too, i'm a diehard Mets fan and i'm not unhappy with Benitez at all. I think one problem is that even when he does get a save he usually puts runners on first, and maybe even gives up a run although not the tying run, so when watching him it seems like he blows a lot more saves than he really does. So even though he is actually quite reliable it is always an adventure, of course for the Mets so is a fly ball to the outfield. Really their relief pitching is where the Mets are strongest.

I'm a die hard Mets fan (1984) but its time for the man to go. I was at the game Sunday and the moment he walked on the field the stadium groaned. I don't care what the numbers say, the man does NOT inspire confidence at all. If you save 40 games a year but blow every important game from September 15th on then what good is it? Not counting his days with Baltimore here's some of his finer moments

1999 - Game 6 - Atlanta - comes in the 9th with a one run lead after the Mets rallied dramatically from 5 runs down - promptly gives it right back

2000 - Game 2 NLDS - JT 3 run homer - thank God for Darryl Hamilton

Game 1 World Series - the game that could have changed everything. Notice Valentine didn't even bother getting him in Game 5

2001 - after winning the first two games of the Braves series it's a beautiful Sunday afternoon. I'm sitting Sec 42 Mez by the left field foul poul anticipating a 4-1 win, the series sweep and a TON of momentum swinging the Mets way. 15 horrible minutes later, the season and the miracle run is flatlining

- six days later we're officially pronounced dead. the 5-1 lead we have in Atlanta goes up in flames...John Franco, his arm falling off is forced to come in and serve up a grandslam.

I'm pretty sure he blew the lead in the 2000 NLCS Game 2 against St. Louis but I could be wrong.

Can you name any pitcher in the history of baseball who has blown so many important games?? Remember I didn't even include his memorable Baltimore days, although I think that bastard Jeffrey Maier scarred Armando for life when he stole Jeter's homerun for the Yankees.

Plus he's an immature bitch who freaks out whenever the media dares to question what happened out there. Franco blew a number of games over the years and always stood in front of his locker and was accountable. It's time for Armando to grow up.

*Oh yeah, just because I'm so bitter I'll add a great 2002 moment. It's early August and the Mets are only 3 games out of the wild card after a horrible first four months of the season. It's a saturday double header against Arizona and the Mets have a one run lead in the 9th. We close it out the lead is 2 games....FUCKING GREG COUNSELL HITS A HOME RUN....the Mets lose that game, then the nightcap and have the worst August any professional team has ever had

One more blown save last night.

The Mets should trade Benitez to the Red Sox for Shea Hillenbrand. This trade would benefit both teams.

The Red Sox could end their closer by musical chairs experiment and the Mets would get a very good thirdbasemen. The Sox have been trying to trade this guy all spring because they are a slave to the OPS number. What do you guys think about Shea to Shea?

As a Red Sox's fan, I don't want them to trade Shea at all. But with the disaster that has been the bullpen so far, I wouldn't be suprised to see a deal like this happening. Although they'll probably wait a while longer before doing anything.

True both teams can use those players but then that leaves New York without a closer. Plus Wigginton has looked fine to me so far.

Benitez wouldn't last at Fenway. The vultures would eat him alive. That, and the arsonist by committee is working just as designed by Bill James. Bring in any of the arsonists in the 5th inning, 7th inning or a 9th inning situation, and the same result is achieved.
Of course, this has now led to the 'When Do The Green Monster Seats Open So I Can Go Out In Glory' Group to suggest using the bullpen in the 1st two innings, then going to the starters. At least if they do this, it'll be 5-0 out of the gate and I won't get pissed at the end of the game, instead of the usual 4-1 lead disappearing in 4 batters. Imagine how pissed I'd be if the Red Sox weren't in 1st place for the Wild Card right now.

Growing up and playing catcher in Little League, he was a hero of mine. Always seemed to be able to get the hit when it mattered, and always seemed like he was in control of the game. 57 is too damn young. RIP Mr Carter.
