Howdy y'all. In recent months, Tom Cruise has gone from wacky Scientologist to crazy Scientologist. He's also wooed Katie Holmes. Many are speculating that this whole...thing...is a publicity stunt to get people to see War of the Worlds. Some argue that it's working, as Cruise is very much in the public eye right now, for better or for worse.

But in a large sense, several folks I've spoken to are concerned that Tom Cruise's recent behavior might actually be scaring people away from seeing War of the Worlds. Myself, I'm on the fence. I believe the film looks rather good and am a fan of Steven Spielberg's work...but am scared crapless of Tom Cruise.

What do you all think?

I don't know why his behavior in real life should scare me away from watching the capable actor Tom Cruise being directed by the often brilliant Spielberg in a movie that promises to deliver lots of cool special effects.

What I am trying to say is, the movie looks sorta promising and I don't care what Cruise does IRL as I don't have to deal with that when watching the movie.

What MIGHT scare me away from the movie are the trailers which in short are like "Watch this guy save his family and be the best man possible" which doesn't sound quite as cool as "Woohoo! Awesome special effects and mayhem and some people surviving too!"

*sigh* Why bother?

Tom Cruise is everywhere.
I think he pumped my gas this morning.

I don't think I'll see the movie--even though he is running down the street. Think of every Tom Cruise movie trailer you have ever seen--he is running down a street as fast as he can. The Firm, Jerry Maguire (I think), Minority Report, etc. It must be part of his contract or something.

The gf saw War of the Worlds last night.

Said it was the worst thing she's ever seen and wanted to leave ten minutes in.

This was never a "$100 movie" to me & mrs. dunk to begin with and now it probably won't even be a rental once it hit the shelves at the local video store.

Look, here's the thing. People are being retarded about this whole Tom Cruise thing. He's always been a little strange, it's just now he's talking about it more and getting out more.

No one else seemed to notice for some reason, but he's been headed down this new path ever since he left Nicole. Did you notice that after he worked on Collateral he was hanging out with Jamie Fox and showing up at parties and awards shows he used to ignore? He was all over the place. I don't think it was just to promote the movie, I think it was because he was free to go out and have fun without the ex.

May just be hitting a mid life crisis. I expect he'll calm down in a bit.

I didn't want to see it before. And I extra don't want to see it now.

And there's no way I'll see MI-3. Cruise gets 30 percent of the gross off the top, and even if he's only tithing to the Co$ (and I'm sure it's more than that) then they're getting $.32 of my money. And that's more than I'd ever knowingly give them.

But I think we're missing a bigger issue here. Since when does Bullitt have a girlfriend?

And that's how you narrate a story.

It looks like Independance Day redux.

If the movie is as brilliant as THE LAST SAMURAI, I might consider it...but for the most part, I don't watch Tom Cruise movies.

I still have yet to see Jerry Maguire, believe it or not.

As far as actors go, even with his recent outbursts, Cruise isn't anywhere near the craziest of them. That said, I don't really care one way or the other about actors as people. I like Cruise well enough as an actor, but the movie doesn't seem that great to me. I might be willing to catch it at the second-run theater.

That's weird - my wife says the same thing. In fact, she calls all of his movies "The _____ Firm" (this one will be "The War of the Firms") because all of his trailers look like The Firm trailer.

Yeah, Tom's been annoying the hell out if me lately (see new avatar), and my interest in WotW was definitely waning. But then good reviews started trickling in from sources I usually trust (Ain't It Cool News, for example) and now I'm torn.

I'll definitely see it, but maybe not until after the 4th.

Two of my best friends need to take pills to make it through the day (one for her bi-polor, and the other needs help for her headaches).

I can not support a person that goes around saying that my friends are "supporting evil" and need "to take vitamins" instead of drugs. I did a LOT of research on scientology and the more I read about it (mostly from EFF and wikpedia) the more upset at Cruise I was getting. I saw the Today show clip and until Cruise leaves the cult, I'll never see another one of his flicks again.

Sadly, that is going to ring true for all scientology cult members. And I really wanted to see The Rock in "Be Cool."

We were discussing this last night.

I think people will get turned off by Cruise, because certain "eccentric" behavior by CELEBRITIES is expected (drugs, infidelity,...) and some is not.

He apparently to be WACKY, but LOONEY.

And I think many people might not patronize the movie because of it.

Like him or not, ya gotta be at least a little jealous of him.

He's had Mimi, Nicole, and now Katie. Not to mention the leading ladies he's had a chance to see nekkid ("Risky Business", etc.)

Personally, I could do without the recent hype, but I pretty much ignore most of it anyway. I do like Cruise as an actor, he was terrific in "The Color of Money" and especially in "Born on the Fourth of July"

As far as WOTW, I'll probably wait for the DVD to appear at the public library.

I probably won't see WOTW, not because of Tom Cruise's wackiness, but because I've heard that it's supposedly spectacularly bad.

If the movie were supposed to be good, or if I had any interest in it, I wouldn't mind going to see it. Do I approve of everything Tom Cruise does? Of course not. But I'm not going to let what someone I don't know does on their own time prevent me from going and seeing a movie to enjoy myself, unless that person is convicted/accused of something like Michael Jackson is/was.

I could care less what Tom does in his personal life so that has no bearing on if I'll see WOTW. The previews haven't made me want to see this movie at all, but the wife wants to see it so I'm sure we'll be going in the next week or so.

Agreed, at least when it comes to Tom. Anybody else who subscribes to Scientology I could care less about until they come out denouncing medicine.

There are non-crazy Scientologists?

I am allergic to huge summer blockbusters, especially when they involve spacecraft and explosions. Cruise's involvement is simply added reason to avoid this one.
