That's blasphemy!! Having grown up in Chicago, and living in Arizona the last 30 years, I miss white castles terribly. The frozen ones just don't flush out your system like the real ones do.
My daughter (who lives with my ex in Indianapolis) is nice enough to bring me a crave case whenever she comes out. I am going out there for her high school graduation in May, and there is a white castle less than a mile from my hotel.. I anticipate several meals there.
I note that the only pro-A&W people here (I count myself in that group, though I will say that Mozza Burgers suck and Teen Burgers rule) are Canadian. I believe the American A&Ws are significantly different.
An incomplete list of chains we don't have in Saskatchewan: Taco Bell, Hardee's, Steak & Shake, In 'n' Out (though a few years ago, there was a clone in Saskatoon that was super good for a few weeks before they quit trying), Krispy Kreme, Sonic, Cracker Barrel, Olive Garden, Applebee's, and IHOP. And they're just building our first Chili's now.
I am sorry - I must put in a good word for Culver's and their butter burgers - we are fortunate to have one in Louisville now, but for awhile, I had a 40 minute drive to the nearest one - and a confirmed stop in Lafayette on the way to Mrs AWA's parent's place. Double Bacon ButterBurger, Waffle Fries, Vanilla Milkshake, maybe a Cashew Sundae for dessert.
We'll be back right after order has been restored here in the Omni Center.

*bleep* How has friggin' CULVERS not come up in this thread yet?!? Between the awesome burgers and the custard...good damn call, man.
Although it is hard, we try to scope out the local nonchain places. I am old enough to remember the joy of travelling and finding local places for food and being able to enjoy the great regional differences that used to exist from food to accents to you name it.

Can find a lot of good stuff that way. I'm planning on heading over to this little place an hour away, just south of College Station simply because they serve chicken fried bacon with gravy for dipping.

We just got one near us and I'm dying to try it, but our kids won't eat cheeseburgers that don't have a big "Mc" on them. It sounds ridiculous, but I think a babysitter may be in order so we can go to a burger place.

I like the burgers, but (this may be blasphemous) really don't dig the fries.
Originally posted by odessastepsWhen I was in Louisville last summer, the only place I knew I wanted to eat at was Wick's, since they advertised on OVW televsion.
You know, Wick's is good, but not my favorite local L'Ville Za - I like Bearno's better.

Culver's has been up here in Green Bay for about 10 years now...but we've had a local joint called Storheim's doing the same gimmick, only BETTER (minus the drive-thru) for 40 years prior.
And if you want unbelievably awesome butterburgers, visit the Kroll's West right across the street from Lambeau Field. They may have originated the whole thing...Favre and Holmgren made the cover of SI eating sausage there once. (Also KICK*SS perch.)
While on the business Trip to Salt Lake, I was able to visit many of the great fast food places you all have in the States. My favorites;
- Wendy's Vanilla Frosty, which only just now has come up to Canada.
- Fuddruckers, where I ate the 1 pound cheeseburger a couple of times. Just wonderful.
- Any place with A&W Cream Soda, which we do not have up here in Canada.
- Crackerbarrel. It was here that I was re-introduced, after MANY years without having it, to something called "chicken fried chicken". Add sawmill gravey (Canadians love us some gravey, we do) and it was EXCELLENT. Of note; I asked them if they had ~STEWARTS ROOTBEER, which they did. When they brought mine out it wasn't one of those standard smaller bottles, it came in one that was close to 1 liter!! And it was CHILLED. 12/10 for the Stewarts alone.
As for Canadian food palces?
- Street-side hotdog vendors. - Gabriel's Pizza. - Beaver Tales. - Dunn's in Ottawa where they serve the BEST Montreal Smoked Meat Poutine. That plus Stewarts = awesome, but for some reason no place here carries STEWARTS ROOTBEER.
They need to write that into NAFTA; we need STEWARTS. And chicken fried chicken (cause no one serves that here either).
