How interesting this has two replies but the "end times" thread has over 40. Wonder how many in the south thought her defiance and what it led to were signs of the end of civilization?

The Detroit and Montgomery bus companies reserving a seat on every bus in her honor, with a black ribbon, until her funeral, seams equally appropriate.

You know, its really, REALLY disappointing that the south gets constantly painted as 100% racist all the time. You know, there ARE people in the south who didnt support segregation, and didnt agree with the racist views that were prevelant in the region. There are people down south that are ashamed that thier neighbors and family members and sometimes elected officials acted like complete jackasses. What Rosa Parks did, while a carefully orchestrated publicity stunt, was effective in jump starting the dialog that has led to many people having much better lives through the civil rights movement. To use it to make a slap at the people of the region is sad. | BigSteve

I don't think that anyone is trying to cast the South as 100% racist either now or in the past or to use the death of Rosa Parks as something to bludgeon people. DrDirt is right, I'm sure, that lots of folks in the South thought that a "mixing of the races" would lead to the downfall of America. | StaggerLee

Not what I meant or said. Half the south is transplanted northeners anyway today. I grew up in a small NE Ohio city. My mother talked about the segregated stores and resturants when she was growing up in the 1940's. They burned a cross in the 1960's on the lawn of a black prof hired at the local college. A Grand Dragon of the Klan lived in the area. In the late 1980's we stopped in a small Western Ohio town for lunch with an African grad student and they wouldn't serve us. Please don't assume you know what I think. The fact is that during the heyday of the civil rights movement, many God-fearing southerners, and northerners, feared that mixing the rest would end civilization.
