I like to use AOL IM to talk to a select number of individuals. But while I'm talking to them, I'm exposed to my whole list of high school and college people I've added to my buddy list over time who feel the need to bother me. I have no problem saying hi, but when I'm having a private conversation I don't want 5 other IM windows popping up and blinking all the time.

Sooo...

Is there any way to instill an invisibility feature like Yahoo's IM has? So that no one can tell if I'm online or not? Or is there some sort of software that will do this or something? I'm trying to stay away from Trillian.

Isn't that that the little eye in the upper left corner of your buddy list does?

Huh. Well what do you know. I've been using AOLIM for 7 years and I've never noticed that before. Weird. Thanks Eddie.

I'm not sure when they put that in, but it freaked me out recently when a coworker signed off one evening and then kept IMing me from nowhere. Don't thank me, thank her...

At the risk of sounding stupid, where is this eye at? I don't have one in the upper left hand corner of my buddy list. Perhaps I'm using an older version?

It's in my version 5.9.x

I think they introduced it in 5.5.x. I remember seeing it about a year ago when I upgraded.

wow, I can't believe I didn't know about this feature either.

One AIM pet peeve I have, on the Mac version, you can actually still send messages if you're away. On the PC version, if you're away and you send a message, it automatically sets you online. But now that I know about invisible mode, I can just use that if i'm avoding people

Before that button was there, you could always have a separate buddy list saved somewhere you could load up, then set the preferences so only people on that list could see you.

Or you could just use Trillian 3 because it's nice and smaller than AIM and connects to Yahoo and MSN and ICQ and has stupid emoticons that make sounds. Oh and no stupid advertisements.

Not to keep pushing the linux thing, but I came across this today which talks about MS ceasing support for Win98 and ME, and suggesting linux alternatives. It also breaks down system requirements for a couple of the linux distros:
