Not really, but I tend to use my Gmail address to sign up for mailing lists and my address is easily found online, so I routinely get several thousand spam messages per month. If there was a spike in spam traffic, I'd never notice.
Probably less than one spam a day, on average, gets through the filter into my inbox, so that's pretty impressive. And though I don't check that often, it's been a long time since I've caught Gmail sending a legit message to the spam folder.
I haven't played with Ubuntu in years, but, as I recall, it's about as easy as you'll get in terms of a linux installation. What's your grub.conf file look like? You likely either have an error with your grub.conf or an issue with your boot partition....
