My girlfriend just experienced an earthquake today in Lynchburg, Virginia. It was also supposed to be felt in the Richmond/DC area as well. Any other wieners experience it?

Wow in Virginia? Once in a blue moon you get a 4.0-5.0 in New York, Pennsylvania or Ohio but I've never heard of one that far south.

I'm just waiting, since the scare of 1990, for the 'big one' in St Louis that will level the entire Midwest.

My Livejournal friends are panicking about their little earthwobble--but man, out here a 4.5 is a "Hey, was that a truck driving by?" magnitude. Since 1989, I figure if it's not a 7.1, there's nothing to worry about.

Hasn't there been a "Death Quake" looming on the east coast for decades now?

How to Make the Wienerboard a Better Place, Chapter 1: Just because you can't spell "Heidenreich", doesn't make you clever.
(pout)

Virginia? Man, they get ALL the good shit down there.

Then again, it'd probably be like if someone asked me what snow was like. 'Cept you don't get to throw your back out during an earthquake.

I thought nobody was worried about that any more since the 1989 quake that registered around 7.1, postponed that Giants/A's World Series game, and hurt basically nobody because of years of preparation in Cali.

Or am I wrong, Left Coast Wieners?

(EDIT: Sorry, CRZ. I suppose I should read before I type.)

I'm in Rosslyn on the 14th floor and felt the floor of our office vibrate slightly, but thought nothing of it. My girlfriend was at home closer to Baltimore and said the 2nd floor of the house shook(water moving in glasses, CPU monitor moving) but the 1st floor wasn't.

Probably. The East Coast has had some bad quakes in the past. The St. Lawrence Valley is an active area, with a bad quake in 1663 and another 7.0 in 1925. Charleston, SC had an estimated 7.3 in 1886 and they still get quakes from time to time.

It is amusing that Alaska had two stronger quakes yesterday(a 4.8 near Fairbanks and a 6.2 in the Aleutians) while WTOP radio broke into near panic/snowstorm coverage over a 4.5.

Even though it wasn't "basically nobody"--just some people unlucky enough to drive the Cypress or live in the Marina, totaling about 70 deaths and a billion in damage, IIRC--yeah, we've all become jaded and sophisticated. My husband (geology major) and I like to bet on the magnitude, depth and location of each quake we feel. "I'll take a shallow 3.5 on the San Andreas near Hollister for five bucks. A 4.0 on the Hayward? You're on, sucker."

I lived in Pleasanton from 8/89 to 3/91 and I remember a being in my car at a stop light near the end of my time there and feeling the car start to wobble - looked at the guy in the lane next to me and said "Earthquake ?" and he said "Yeah, Earthquake." - the light turned green and we both drove on - just another day, another earthquake.....

I live near Quantico, and I just sorta thought they were firing mortars or their big guns (every week we get big booms and shakes from them). Then my brother looked like he shit himself, however, so we had to check it out online.

Weird. I'm living in Lynchburg, VA now and didn't feel it. But then, it must have been fairly light here.

Speaking for all of the Best Coast Wieners, I must say...

It's only an earthquake. Get over it. Life goes on.

Call me when you get something truly disastrous, like a football team that can't win on the road.

Huh, I looked it up and you are dead on right with that, even to the year. I bet it was an urban legend first and then someone decided to do it for real.
