Yes, the company that started one year ago with a 20GB model and a 60GB model, then dumped the 20GB and later introduced an 80GB model, then dropped the price on the 60GB and stopped producing it, is now set to unviel a new 40GB version for $399 later this month!
I bought one just over a week ago and have no serious regrets. I got the 60GB model because I wanted to hardware based backwards compatibility, which they stopped including with the 80GB model.
Plus, thanks to the PS3, I'm shooting up the W's F@H charts!
They shoulda done this in the first place. I don't know if they got greedy or if they really couldn't afford to do it (but they CAN afford to now? sounds fishy). The system might be more successful than it is now.
Speaking of relative successes, does anybody have any recent console sale data to do an actual comparison? Last data I saw (almost a year ago at this point) had the Nintendo DS as number one followed by the PS2. I think the 360 was next. I'd be interested to see how things stack up now.
And I'm still not buying one. Not until game prices go down and more developers step up and put out some must-have products. Or maybe I'm just waiting for GTA4 before my next console purchase. Heh.

Don't have time to look it up now, but monthly sales figures get released and the DS is still dominating with the Wii by far the biggest home console seller. Wii usually does double what second place sells(was 360, then the PS3 for a month or two after the "price cut" now they are neck and neck I believe).
edit: Here's a link with a nice graphic showing sales figures going back to december of last year until this past August.
Witness the power of Halo -(3)-. (For one week anyway.)
With SmashBros. and SMGalaxy coming down the pipe don't expect it to last long though.
I scoffed at the idea of buying a 360 just to play Halo, but being the addict that I am, two days after the game came out I broke down and bought it with the game.
I. REGRET. NOTHING.
Forget GTA IV, and as soon as MGS4 hits, a PS3 will be in my possession.
I won't be picking one up until the game library contains more than one or two titles I'd be interested in, but this is absolutely the right move. Sony's finally releasing a product that is competitively priced with their closest (in terrms of the kind of product offered) rival. I understand that things were different, production cost-wise, for Sony a year ago, but this is honestly how they should have done things to begin with. If they couldn't offer a competitively-priced option, they shouldn't have been releasing a next-gen console.
It wasn't that they couldn't put out a competitively priced product, it was that they didn't think they needed to. If one word was picked to describe Sony's actions concerning the PS3 it would have to be hubris.
From comments like "The next-gen starts when we say it does" to "Rumble is a last-gen technology", Sony keeps acting like they're still industry leaders, but the sales data just doesn't support that conclusion.
It would be stupid to suggest that Sony is trying to make the PS3 a dud, but their actions really make you wonder why they keep making decisions like this. For example, the new DualShock 3 that was announced. It will be in North America sometime next year, but Japan gets it this year. Not a terribly huge deal, but why aren't they rushing it the US in time for Christmas? Rumble isn't exactly a system seller, but it sure doesn't hurt.
I'm also baffled by the fact that they keep releasing different SKUs for the PS3 so they don't have to say they've had a price cut.
And finally, the game library is lacking as everyone knows. I keep hearing that the 360 didn't have tons of great titles in its first year, but I still think the PS3 is way behind the curve on this. I would argue that the 360 did have plenty of fantastic games its first year, but it isn't really relevent since it was the first to market, so if you wanted "next-gen", you had to get an XBox 360. The PS3 doesn't have that luxury. Yes, they've got their library of PS2 titles, but odds are good most of the PS3 owners have already played the PS2 games they're interested in. The game my friends with PS3s tell me I have to get is Ninja Gaiden Sigma. The game is a ton of fun, but it doesn't change the fact that it is the third rehash of an Xbox game.
Man, sometimes trying to be supportive of the PS3 is like being a Washington Generals fan.

Yeah I think the biggest thing is that sales jump so drastically during the holidays that now is when you must have a game or two that can move systems. Halo 3 is doing that for the 360, and Nintendo clearly has some big games coming quickly, but in looking at the PS3 release date list Sony has squat. Not one single major game that is only on their system between now and Christmas.

Can't tell if Joystiq has stopping doing their new release post (which I'm cheating off of) or if it's just lost in the E3 coverage. Tune in next week! US - Toy Story 3: The Video Game Europe - Everybody's Tennis - Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker
