The axe has fallen on the Canadian minority Liberal government in the wake of the Sponsorship Scandal and the Gomery Inquiry, as pretty much every non-Liberal in Parliament (The Conservatives, the Bloc Quebecois & the New Democractic Party) voted "Yes" on the Non-Confidence Motion brought forward by the Conservatives (the official opposition). All-told, the voting was 171 for "Yes" and the rest for "No".

Anyhoo, it's election time again in the Great White North. Pundits are predicting...yet another Liberal minority government.

Well at least you know that your elected officials are actually doing something, even if it is just chasing their own tails. We elect people here, and they don't do shit until their next re-election campaign.

Which, given the disorganization of the Conservatives, the limitedness of the Bloc, the stigmatation against the NDP and the general fear of change in Canadian politics, is pretty much a certainty.

I'm calling this right now: Liberal minority with 126-to-128 seats, voter turnout is around 48%.

You know what REALLY sucks? I bet the cost of this election means a new tax regardless of who wins...

Just frigging fabulous!! Merry freaking Christmas!!

Freeway, I think 48% might be very optimistic, considering not many people actually want to have an election again so soon.

The biggest issue for me is that this election is not going to be about issues, but rather about finger-pointing in all directions.

The Conservatives will tell you how scary the NDP is as an alternative and that the Liberals are all crooks. (find me a politician who is not...)

The NDP will tell you how scary Steven Harper is and how crooked the Liberals are...

The Liberals will tell you how scary Harper and Layton and their policies are.

The Bloc will ... well they are the Bloc, they will tell Quebec how scary the rest of Canada is...

Hopefully, someone will make the effort to keep the leaders on topic in terms of issues instead of mudslinging, but I am not optimistic.

Well, I am. If I'm going to have to deal with hype, I'd rather it be political discourse over a dog saying "I smell gifts." (Canadian Tire ads)

The date is set: 23rd of January. There's talk of a break from the 23rd of December to the 2nd of January, but I'm sure the folks in the trenches of the various parties will be sniping away through that timeframe.

I dunno, man, a talking dog is pretty cool. On a semi-serious note, does this actually mean anything? Or will it just be a new government that basically does the same thing as the old one with different people?

It might not even be different people.

But chances are that in two months time we'll be watching a very similar minority Liberal government in Parliament. Here's hoping that they manage to work some sort of official coalition in order to make it work.

I'm actually really quite annoyed about this.

I don't believe the Conservative Party is a viable alternative to the federal Liberals, especially given that they can't even provide a cohesive platform for themselves that the whole party can agree upon. Meanwhile, the NDP continues to play games, although as marginalized as they are nationally, I suppose it's to be expected.

That leaves the Bloc Quebecois who are now in the position of pretty much having achieved their goal: they've put enough members in the House of Commons that any government has to respect their presence. I used to be angry about this, but, frankly, they've played the game according to the laws of the land.

Unless we want to play the minority government game well into the 2010s, the "Quebec Question" has to be dealt with, and soon. And I fear the result, especially being from Atlantic Canada. My Canada includes Quebec of course...

The Conservatives just announced today (according to the CBC) that they'll cut the GST to 5% (from 7%) if elected.

After such an announcement what does Paul Martin say? "I'd like to see Canadians bring home more with their paycheck", while saying that he wants to cut income taxes instead of GST. Sp what does Harper reply with; "Who says we're only cutting the GST?"

And with these bold statements, Harper now has a lock on Western Canada and can make inroads in Ontario and the East.

VERY strong showing so far from Haper and the conservatives. It may be too early to tell, but maybe (hopefully) they've learnt from the last election. Two huge bombshells the past couple of days, and they were made by them themselves. No leaks, no liberals spinning it out first. They publicly made their stance on same-sex marriage known. I think it's reasonable and should've been done that way in the first place. My personal stance on the issue aside, it makes sense for the ELECTED people have a FREE CHOICE to FREELY vote the way they see fit, without party wips getting in the way and without having to torpedo your career for stepping up for your beliefs and that of your riding. And without APPOINTED officials deciding what to do. Good work, fellas.

I love the fact that Paul Martin's liberals used to say "tax cuts will make them gut social programs and kill healthcare!" then a few weeks ago proposed (gasp!) TAX CUTS. I love even more that Haprer and his girls and boys LAID DOWN THE LAW with the GST break announcement. Unlike income tax, which effetcs those in certian brackets, it don't matter if you're rich or poor or middle class or anything really.....if you're buying stuff YOU PAY SALES TAX. Everyone will be saving money.

The GST break (the first part of it) will cost the government 4.5 billion dollars. But hey, if the liberanos (er, liberals) could spend 2 billion trying to track down farmers and their guns, then SURELY they can find 4.5 billion somewhere.

I was going to vote conservative before. This certianly cements my support.

Thank you Mr. Zim for not paying attention to the trolls that was a great statement. I myself will not pay attention to these trolls either but continue posting clear, concise and well thought out commentary on those two worthless bastards Bret and Steve. Glad to see this board is run by intelligent people. I will however require an apology from the persons who insulted me. That was uncalled for and very low class indeed."

I'm going to guess that with your use of the term "Libranos", you never really were looking to throw your vote anywhere but the Conservatives.

I'll wait until I hear what the NDP has brewing before I make any decisions. The Conservatives lost my support the last election when they pledged to assist Air Canada in their restructuring efforts, so we'll just wait and see.

Plus, I'd like to meet the local people in Surrey before making a final decision.

I get the feeling this next election period is gonna be FUN.

Not sure I would agree with your definition of "FUN".

Also call me not impressed with the Conservative "promise machine"....

Do we really believe any promise that is made in an election campaign anymore, seriously?

Our riding here in Whitby is going to be a very interesting fight.

Judi Longfield is the incumbent Liberal MP. She has won three elections here.

The Conservatives are running Jim Flaherty, who has been the MPP here since 1995.

Both are very popular in the community, so it should be a very interesting campaign. Interested to see what the two of them are doing tomorrow at the Christmas parade...

Perhaps I'm being pessimistic, but I'm worried about a Liberal majority being a good possibility. The economy in Canada is very good right now (e.g. umemployment rate down to 6.4%) and really, that's the main, and sometimes only, factor for Canadians, moreso than even health care, social programs, scandals, etc.

I'll be voting Conservative and hoping that Harper and the Conservatives continue their strong showing that El Nastio has pointed out.

First the "war" on drugs was used to erode our constitutional freedoms and we go along. Then the Patriot act in the name of security. Now this. I am much more concerned about issues like this than anything a terrorist can do.
