It's on a short hiatus. They do this a couple times every season. Other shows like '24' do this too. I think new Angel episodes start on either the 7th or 14th.
All networks usually have lulls between the major sweeps periods (except for July) for their major shows. That's why man invented the midseason replacement.
The WB also enjoys not airing reruns of Angel. I don't know if its the kind of thing where the reruns don't draw great ratings, or the WB has to always have something *fresh* out, but as a rule of thumb, if Angel's not new, it isn't on.
Yeah, angles in the ring... someone thought of that a long time ago. They called it pro wrestling." -- the MCS

Probably WB doesn't want to bother airing reruns of a show they're planning to cancel, so they're taking the space to shove more Smallville down everyone's throat....nothing really against Smallville, per se, but Angel is so much a better show that it's not funny.
Word has it that Sarah Michelle Geller won't be showing up on the series finale of Angel because Joss (pretty logically, IMO) doesn't want to put the focus on a guest star during the last episode. SMG also, however, turned down an appearance on the second-last Angel episode.
Feh, good riddance. Whilst Buffy owed a debt to the Angel character, hence his final appearance, Angel was totally autonomous. There would literally be no place for her in the final reel without doing some seriously convoluted stroytelling, which is the opposite of what you want a series finale to be.
Now, if we're talking returns for the big farewell, we just GOTSTA have Julie Benz and Stephanie Romaonv there in some capacity. I'd love to see Holland Manners for one last time, too.
The Maniac Says: Not to get off the subject at hand to much.
But
Angel will go one more year, it just has to. I am now watching the seasons on DVD of Buffy and Angel. I'm ready to take the rapper of season 4 of Buffy.I watched 1-2-3 in the last 2 weeks. I watched 1 and 2 of Angel in the 2 weeks before the Buffy. I'm waiting for someone to finish season 3 of Angel so I can continue to that series.
I started watching Angel half way through season 4 and Buffy the middle of season 6 or 7, I'm not sure.
If they end it now I'll be waiting for the release of next season, that's just not acceptable. I need the promise of something new next year while I catch up to where I started.
I know poor fucking Maniac never gets what he wants, but I predict. Angel will go one more year! Why because I will use my awesome power to make it so.
I only watched one segment, really... him with Asia Carrera. All I want to know is what it would take to get this tripe canned and replaced with reruns of the Screen Savers.
