| #1 Posted on 21.1.04 2302.15 | Instant Rating: 7.13 | This is what the season premiere should have been. Unfortunately, they needed all the prior episodes (well, not *all*) to set up Spike's and Lindsay's returns.
Dig Spike as Angel Version 2.0! The double wrist stake was a nice subtle (or maybe not so subtle) way of establishing that Spike was assuming Angel's old role. Lindsay as Doyle is going to be an interesting twist later. I still enjoy Spike's throwaway lines about events on Buffy. ("Not another basement...") Its a shame the apartment doesn't look just a little more like Angel's in season one.
Why, though, did Lindsay turn on Eve at the end? Or, assuming the intent all along was for Spike to save Angel, why make a plan where Eve is so exposed? It was clever of her to try to make Angel think it was a dream (although when you're dreaming, does anyone ever tell you its a dream?). Her deflection of her guilt at the end was impressive, but I'm surprised Angel didn't just no sell and keep her from leaving. No matter, they've been teasing dissension in the group all season. SOMETHING has to happen to break them apart. Maybe Wesley will finally figure out the whole Connor story? After Wesley staking Angel tonight, and Wesley's conversation a few episodes back where they talked about his loyalty, he is definately going to be the one of the gang to put the pieces together.
The Buffy cameo (if you can call it that) was weak, but understandable. If you want to bring SMG in, (assuming that's even possible, although she has said she wouldn't mind doing a few episodes, right?), its too big a deal to throw away with a thirty second scene. At the same time, if you want her to appear in the dream sequence, how do you do it? I suppose they handled it the best they could. I suppose Boreanaz makes a good scapegoat if the cameo draws any backlash.
What was up with all the stuff that Fred pulled out of Angel? I like the use of the goldfish to represent the soul, only to later have Buffy reference that she can't keep goldfish. Bear?
The Lindsay/Eve lets review our evil plans scene was both rather blatant, yet necessary to fill in the viewer, I guess. When the senior partners figure out what's up (and how can they not notice Lindsay? Sure, maybe the tatoos make him invisible to detection, but can't the psychics see Spike is working with someone? Eve doesn't have any tattoos. Lindsay's presence should be obvious from the vacuum left by his absense, if that makes any sense.

Gotta say I was a little disappointed with the ending, though.

The ending left my wife and I ready to watch next week, though I have to agree that Andrew's hair looked just a lot goofy. | A Fan

| #4 Posted on 24.1.04 1024.33 | Instant Rating: 2.59 | Sorry, I'm late traffic. Anyway, I am really enjoying this season of Angel. The Spike slowly being groomed into the Angel we all know and love is a nice touch. I am digging Angel being the lost hero with no sense of direction and duty. Wesley is slowly becoming one of my favorite characters, but the cast needs to go back to kicking more butt and less talking. This cast works best with its back against the wall than being in charge.
The great thing about Joss is the way he is dropping hints about Buffy and what the Scooby Gang may be up to. I believe they are in Europe rebuilding the Watcher's Council which could explain Andrew's role in next week's episode. Of course, if Andrew is one of the new Watchers or emissary for them then Buffy needs to get herself a better personal director.
