Great signing, Colletti.

Here's the curious part of this buy-out. According to this article (mlb.mlb.com), any team that signs Jones will only have to pay him 400 grand, while the Dodgers would have to pay him the rest of the $20 million contract. If I'm a club in the NL West, I'm signing Jones to a deal ASAP

Skinner: Well, I was wrong. The lizards are a godsend.
Lisa: But isn't that a bit short-sighted? What happens when we're overrun by lizards?
Skinner: No problem. We simply release wave after wave of Chinese needle snakes. They'll wipe out the lizards.
Lisa: But aren't the snakes even worse?
Skinner: Yes, but we're prepared for that. We've lined up a fabulous type of gorilla that thrives on snake meat.
Lisa: But then we're stuck with gorillas!
Skinner: No, that's the beautiful part. When wintertime rolls around, the gorillas simply freeze to death!

Regardless of whoever signs Andruw (or if no one does), the Dodgers will still have to pay him his contract. There's just a deal that Andruw won't double dip - whatever he's getting paid by his new team, his old team doesn't have to pay him. Since Jones can't demand a big deal after his year and doesn't really need it with the money coming in*, he probably will be getting the minimum, but he doesn't need to be signed at all to cost the Dodgers the money.

* - though it won't be coming in right away. Part of this deal is Jones only gets $3 mil of the $17 mil coming to him this year, with around $3 mil a year for the next five to make up for it. It's not going to be fun to be paying for Jones until 2015, but finding $14 mil this year could make a big difference.

And dosen't it count as deferred money and allow them some cap space. For God's sake, sigh Manny so you have something for fans.

Now if they could just dump Jason Schmidt, they could pretend those god-awful signings never happened.

I wouldn't be shocked if Dayton Moore and the Royals picked him up. Dayton likes his ex-Braves. It'd be worth a gamble for 400 grand. Hell, they went after him last year anyway.

I'm surprised to see a baseball team do this. It's really the only move they had.

Jones does make a nice cheap gamble for somebody now though

I wouldn't be surprised to see him get pick up and be a really good deal. He's still very young (I think 32) and I would think he would want to prove he still has plenty left in him. Even if his battingh avg. stinks, he probably can pound out 20+ HRs and still be a hell of a defensive outfielder. I just wonder if he wants to play for certain other teams: I understood that a big reason he flopped in LA was because it simply wasn't Atlanta and that it's either back to the Braves or bust for him.
