That's a good question. I have no idea. Maybe to start the whole thing with Eddie/JBL thing.
I can imagine Long as a GM. Bit of fresh originality to the stereotypical heel GM. I'm hoping to get a kick outta this...

I'm 50/50 on it ... I'm wondering if pairing him with Jindrak was a way to get him away from being "the manager that tries to get the black wrestlers over" thus leading into the GM role.
I hope it works ... I like Teddy.

"I have heard that now there is a General Manager vacancy on Smackdown, the storyline will be that WWE will hold an election to determine who will get the position, with fans registering and voting via WWE.com. Teddy Long, Stephanie McMahon, Shane McMahon and Paul Heyman are said to be running."
So unless they're going to forge the results to this election, it might not be Teddy after all.

There'll be some computer screw-up, and the new SD GM will be one of the diva hopefuls.

I always thought it'd be fun for them to do something like that, but a bit different. Bring in some names like Teddy, Steph, Heyman, Shane, and some names from the past (Dusty, Arn, Jimmy Hart) for 1-week trials as Smackdown GM, and whatever show the fans liked best, they could vote for the GM who ran that show to be the permanent GM.
