| #21 Posted on 12.5.03 1201.05 | Instant Rating: 0.00 | Tobal 2 and Advance Wars made it on the list (the former still way low), but the rest of my bitching list from the EW thread didn't. Bah. (Still, they did remember Archon, Adventure, Herzog Zwei, Gunstar Heroes, and Thief II.)
But where it counts, in the arcade (adding in games that were arcade ports, but are listed for consoles or as "various"):
EW: Missile Command, Frogger, Golden Axe, Joust, Spy Hunter, Battlezone, SPF2T, Asteroids, Daytona USA, Ghouls 'n' Ghosts, Gauntlet, Defender, Robotron: 2084, Centipede, Samurai Shodown, R-Type, Tempest, NBA Jam, Tron, Donkey Kong, DDR, MK2, Galaga, Ms. Pac-Man, SF2, Bust-A-Move 2, VF4, Contra, Tekken 2, [Mike Tyson's] Punch-Out!, Soul Calibur, Tetris. Some glaring omissions, but that's an arcade I'd frequent.
IGN: Golden Axe, Discs of Tron, Galaga, Ghosts 'n' Goblins, VF2, Contra, Track & Field, NBA Jam, Gauntlet, Star Wars, Ms. Pac-Man, SF2, Excitebike (via PC-10), Baseball Stars (on Neo-Geo), Bionic Commando (though VERY different on the NES), [Mike Tyson's] Punch-Out! (ditto), Tetris, SMB. The EW arcade smokes this like a cheap cigar.

I love that NHL '94 was #16. That game is always what I think of when I think of freshman year at college. We were religious about that game.
Why would Advance Wars make the list then? I love Advance Wars, but it is in the same niche, and not nearly as good as FF Tactics.

Ahhh...glad to see it made the list. Spent the better part of college playing all three versions. I just wish they'd make one for the GBA. While technically better, Madden just couldn't compete; and Blitz just isn't the same.
Good Times.

Or throw in Military Madness (Nectaris) on the TurboGrafx/16, which was one of the best games on that system and clearly an inspiration for Advance Wars.
Tactics was an addictive game, but way too easy (develop a Calculator or two and you won the game, and if you stuck with your starting characters and developed their classes well, the only thing Orlandu would be useful for would be his sword). It is a wonderful game and belongs in the top 100, but its fandom stems at least in part from the FF name and aesthetics it carries.
Advance Wars, on the other hand, is a straight-up tactical military sim with a great training mode for novices, multiplayer modes, addictive gameplay, unlockable extras and an edit mode. As far as its genre goes, it's as good as a game can get.
Of course, the list has NO Wizardry games and only one Ultima, so it has no validity and can burn in hell.

| #26 Posted on 12.5.03 2143.15 | Kinda disappointed...I figured IGN's list would be better, but it wasn't that much better. No original Metroid? And how does Baldur's Gate make the list over BGII, which did what a sequel is supposed to do -- improve over the original game in every way?

| #27 Posted on 12.5.03 2239.14 | Good to see Baseball Stars get some love, that was a great game.
Would probably put NCAA Football, Conker's Bad Fur Day, and Contra a lot higher on my own personal list. And Fnal Fantasy III would've been top 10 easily.
It was good to see a Shining Force game on the list but I prefer the first Shining Force
YES! Pirates! I loved that game. i didn't think anybody liked that game except for me.
I agree that the original Metroid and Zelda should be above the later games, in fact I would probably consider them 1 and 2. Same for Castlevania too.
Omissions off the top of my head: Dragon Warrior, Q-bert, any Suikoden, Donkey Kong, Double Dragon, RBI Baseball, Mortal Kombat, Streets of Rage 3, Rampage

... Star Control 2 was the best game I ever played. I thought it would have ranked higher than 53rd.
Great to see NHL '94 (16th!!! WOW!!!) and Baseball Stars on the list.
Would have liked to have seen Dragon Force (Sega Saturn), Mortal Kombat (Arcade), and Romance of the Three Kingdoms (PC) get in.

Whoa, Streets of Rage 3? Don't you mean 2?? That was like the king of Genesis games.

... Any of them could qualify, but I preferred the PC version despite its late-80's graphics. It was the pioneer game for the Koei "system" of historical games that I've enjoyed so much over the years.
Koei's finest: Nobunaga's Ambition 1 & 2, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, L'Empereur, Genghis Khan, and the current Dynasty Tactics series.

I'd swap Starcraft for Warcraft 2 in the list considering it was what sparked all the mid-90's Real Time Strategy games.
Also, no Wing Commander 3: Heart of the Tiger? That was generally considered the starting point in the full-motion video craze.
