A week ago, I posted a thread detailing Entertainment Weekly's Top 100 Video Games of All Time. This week, the popular video game/DVD/movie site IGN has finished posting their Top 100 games and, I must say, the list is a *tad* bit better. The following post expresses the opinions of a raving Jerichoholic. He is biased, opinionated and bitter. You have been warned.

From everything I've heard about Zelda and the Metroid series, I am in near perfect agreement with the top 5. Was I scanning too quickly, or did Final Fantasy VII not make either list? That's confusing. This list is much better than EW's, though, IMO.

As of Monday, May 9 at 1:14 PM, the Boston Red Sox' Magic Number to clinch the AL East is 135. A combination of 135 Red Sox wins and New York Yankees losses will guarantee the AL East for the Boston Red Sox.

FF-VII made EW's list, not IGN's. And any list that puts Discs of Tron and not the original Tron on it is AOK by me.

Pirates! I loved that game.

FFVII was on the EW list.

Listing games individual from their serieses causes a bit of clutter, doesn't it. It's nice to see Master of Orion and Sam and Max get mentions, but I would have liked to see Monkey Island, Grim Fandango and one of the Sierra Games (Space Quest IV?) represent the adventure genre.

I mean, Track and Field? Ok, the Twister Pad was pretty cool and all, but it wasn't THAT good.

This list is pretty weak, but it's better than the EW one. Final Fantasy II at #43 is insane, especially considering some of the games they put over it (NBA Jam? Deus Ex? Those games shouldn't even place.) Also, Starcraft at #7 is a cruel joke.

At least you can tell people who have a vague idea of what they're talking about did this list, unlke EW's, but I'd rather see the big franchises (Zelda, FF, Mario) grouped in one entry. Each one of those games is better than most of the games on this list.

WHERE IN THE BLOODY BLUE BLOOD HELL IS STARFLIGHT II?

I must say, whenever I see ANY of these big top 100 of all time lists and see that one looked over, I like to throw a big fit.

I like IGN. I trust their PC game reviews very much. But I almost NEVER agree with any of their consol game reviews. It was a nice try at a top 100 with a lot of good ideas, but I personally don't agree with a lot of the positioning and the games up there.

For example, Half-Life, as much as I don't think it's a masterpiece, should by all means be in the top 10 no question.

... *coughs*... yep. Still, the effort is appreciated.

Where the hell is The 7th Guest?

I mean, if this were VH1, it would be in the top 10, not for being good, but for being, if memory serves me correctly, the very first CD-ROM PC game.

I still can't abide with Metroid Prime and Super Metroid getting on when the original game is left off, but having Kid Icarus and ESPECIALLY Bionic Commando on the list makes up for it.

I saw someone post this on the other 100 list, and I agree with him. How does any video game list like this not include Pac-Man? The whole 80's video game explosion revolves around Pac-Man, and it's not a top 100 game of all-time?

Yes, Ms. Pac-Man technically is the better game, but it is the sequel to Pac-Man (which is still what Ms. Pac-Man basically is, just with more mazes), and was create after the video game market had already taken off.

I just don't understand the basis of the list. Because look at #26, Tecmo Bowl. Yep, that kicked off the franchise. But Super Tecmo Bowl is the better game, and more popular. So it appears that with Tecmo Bowl series, historical significance and game idea originality took precedence, while with the Pac-Man series, actual game quality took precedence. It just seems inconsistant. (you could make the same points using Madden or NHL)

It doesn't surprise me that Tactics did not make the list. It's a very niche game made for people who don't mind their battles going on for over a half hour.

I love that NHL '94 was #16. That game is always what I think of when I think of freshman year at college. We were religious about that game.

The 7th Guest was a terrible game, and so was it's sequal, The 11th Hour. I think that's why it didn't make the list.

So the graphics were amazing. So it was the first game on CD-Rom. ... It was still bloody terrible!

Now... MYST... there's another one that should be up there. That's the one that made people want to get CD-Rom drives to play games. Granted, Myst isn't too great these days, but Exile is still fantastic... and... well... they're essentially the same game. Just a NEWER version. Yay!
