It's going to be six more weeks of winter.

http://www.cnn.com/2005/US/02/02/groundhog.day.ap/index.html

Apparantly Phil (the giant squirrel predicting the weather, not any other Phils) did not feel lucky.

Up north, we're still waiting on Balsac Billy and Wiarton Willy.

EDIT: Wiarton Willy says winter's over.

How many times in row has Punxsatawny Phil seen his shadow?

Windy City Woody has also predicted an early spring. I think Windy City Woody is a damn dirty liar.

I'll have to remember that when I go surfing in 70 degree weather tomorrow. :)

Thanks for a great season, Pick of the Week fans...see you next year at Planet Magic in Denmark, WI!

Ah yes, the Groundhog Day gimmick:

If he sees his shadow, 6 more weeks of winter.
If he doesn't, spring comes on time...in 42 days.

You do the math.

Star wipe, and...we're out.

Oh my god, I've never actually sat down and figured that out.
All these years....seriously.
How the hell is this stupid tradition still national news??
The only good to come of it was a funny Bill Murray movie.

Actually, spring comes on time if he sees his shadow (or as it's referred more often, "6 more weeks of winter"), but if he doesn't see his shadow, it's an early spring.

The folklore with this was whether the groundhog would come out of hibernation to explore the outside (meaning he was now out of hibernation, signaling the end of winter), but that he could be scared of his own shadow, which would send him scurrying back into his hole, where it would hibernate for another 6 weeks.

Groundhog's Day has its origins in the celebration of Candlemas, which really devout Christians may have heard of.

And Candelmas is the Christianized name of the pagan holiday of Imbolc.

Does anyone know of any online DVD rental services that DONT change a monthly fee? I want to rent DVD's online, but I'd only want 1 or 2 at a time, and probably wouldnt rent every month. Thanks.
