I admit I'm totally not in the target demographic for this, but this (cnn.com) sounds rather dumb. Then again, I suppose that this would appeal to the hipster teen who watches the O.C. religiously and couldn't live without her mobile phone, so to that extent, it's probably a good business decision.

King of Fighters and Fatal Fury are two separate series, yes. KoF is set up as a tournament thing with characters from SNK's other fighting games (Fatal Fury, Art of Fighting, etcetera) as well as some of other non-fighters like Ikari Warriors.
