I'm surprised this hasn't been touched on yet. Last week, the Toronto Blue Jays signed closer BJ Ryan for five years and $47 million.

Did they overpay? Absolutely. It seems, though, that the purpose was to send a message to players that the Jays have money now and want to compete with Boston and the Yankees.

Unfortunately, that message wasn't heard by Brian Giles, who spurned their offer and signed with the Padres.

I think the Jays should be focusing on another starter and some more hitting power, not a name closer.
