A few months ago the station told me that they were looking into bringing Andrew W.K. into play the annual, free Party in the Park event in Madison. I was a little skeptical about spending a big chunck of budget to get him, but I was excited to finally have a headlining act (and the first "big band" to play since White Stripes, though that was before they hit).

Everything was going fairly well today, the sun was out, it was cool but not cold, and though the bands could have been scheduled better (there were some lapses between the two stages) everyone seemed to be having a good time. Then the clouds swooped in and the threat of rain loomed heavy over the show. The final few bands played what I believe (I wasn't scheduling) shortened sets to get AWK on stage before the rain fell. Unfortunately, it started in early. Plan B was that if the rain was bad enough that there was significant risk to AWK and his band, we'd let him do "I Get Wet" and then pull the plug on the show. However, we were assured that it wouldn't need to come to that.

The show went on, though not quite as planned. Mostly he just ran through his most popular songs (which was fine, but the show was a little shorter than originally planned) and then left. As he's heading towards his bus, my cohost and I realize that he doesn't have a security detail (and who's responsibility THAT was, I don't know), so we end up becoming defacto security, pushing the mob off him while he gets in the bus.

If you've never been a "Rock star body guard" it's an interesting experience. For all the complaining I've done about not getting any dates in the OkCupid thing, I've never been hit on by so many girls. Groupies are just amazing creatures to think that hitting on two lame ass security guards is going to get them into the tour bus (and I wouldn't have wished the majority on AWK, or anyone for that matter). Apparently we did a good enough job that several people in the front asked us if we were AWK's traveling security and what other bands we've worked for (one guy even asked if I could put in a good word for him to get him hired). There were a few other odd characters. There was one guy who was the drummer for an old rock band who tried to force his way into the bus to get AWK to talk to his kid in rehab (of all the people who should be able to understand that these guys DON'T want to be disturbed, another musician should, but apparently he thought his credentials were good enough), the girl who wanted more than anything to have AWK sign her tit (more on her in a sec), and the guy who plays golf with AWK's brother and wants him to come hang out at a church.

After about 20 min, AWK came back out and signed autographs and took pictures. He was extremely cool with everybody, there were some absolute raving maniacs and he treated them all with complete class. He even talked to the old guy's son and got his number so that he could call him when he had more time to talk. The chick who wanted her tit signed never got it. She actually had my cohost sign it (he was the bodyguard of a rockstar~!), but then chickened out when it came to the real deal. I'm not sure what the deal with the church dude was, but he was one of about 30 people who offered AWK places to party that night (which were met with "Oh, I don't know what we're doing tonight, I might have to leave."). There was a heartwarming little moment when I made the crowd let a four year old boy through and he and AWK danced while the kid sang "She is Beautiful". He took the time to make sure everybody'd gotten the pictures and whatever signed (and grabbed a bunch of demo CDs, explaining as he went that "It's how I got started, so it's the least I can do."). Afterwards he hung out for a little while, and (here's the cliche) was a completely and utterly normal guy who just seems absolutely flattered by the attention he recieved. Then he took off to do a couple local media appearences, and we shuffled back off to see if there was any cleaning up to be done.

I don't often get a chance to hang out with rock stars, much less become their defacto personal security detail, but, whether you like his music or not (and I do), AWK seems just a cool person. He's got a real "one of the fans" feel (he spent quite a bit of time talking to a few people about either their bands or bands that were brought up) and he signed anything for anybody. Plus one of his keyboards had a WWE symbol on it, which was cool, but I never thought to ask him about it.

Just thought I'd share this neat experience....

That's a nice story, something you can tell the grandkids about. Though I don't care for the music, it's cool that he was so approachable to the people paying his bills, instede of being the dickhead rockstar. You know what sucks about it, Andrew W.K. could just about pass for my twin, but I never get any groupies.

It's not as outrageous as you think. I was at a Flogging Molly concert (where coincidentally enough Andrew WK was the opening act) and one of the security guys was hitting on me! He told me he could get me on stage, back stage, on the bus and to the after-party as long as I came home with him at the end of the night. He was actually very sweet and nice about it. I told him I was quite flattered, but spoken for.

Detroit WHAT?!

I haven't seen Andrew WK yet, but I have seen his (former?) labelmates, Wolf Eyes, at the Detroit Electronic Music Fest. I really like them and I have a lot of respect for Andrew WK and the music he does.

What other bands played that day?

Yeah. It grows, but it takes forever and a day.

Nobody you've probably ever heard of...

Immortal Technique
Orion Project
Driftless Pony Club
Califone
Heavenly States
Urizen
Soviettes
German Art Students
No Eart Trio
Something to Do
If Then Else
Black Elephant
Prole
Space Camp

Mostly local bands and that sort of thing. I've heard of most of them, but I doubt anyone outside of Madison has.

I've been working on mine for about a year now, and yeah, I've got the middle growing in, barely. *Hangs head in shame*

I've actually heard of most of these bands, but that may just be because I'm fairly tight with a band from Milwaukee, and they'll frequently gush about the bands they play with. I'm getting a hair sick of hearing about the Soviettes and German Art Students respectively.
