Tonight, we are back with the Top 9, or the Top 8 Plus Sanjaya (am I right people?). Tonight, we have Tony Bennett lending himself to the show as the “coach” and the contestants will be singing classics.

Blake leads us off tonight, and does so by singing, “Mack the Knife.” I think he started out kinda slow, but definitely picked up the pace near the middle, and really found his comfort zone. Good song choice for him, and I really enjoyed his performance. The judges also seemed to like the song on him, but thought he could have had a little improvement.

Second up tonight is Phil. He’s singing “Night and Day.” I don’t think the song was as fitting on him as Blake’s was, and thought he struggled at the beginning. He was just alright. Randy and Simon didn’t like it, Paula tried to keep it positive.

Next up is Melinda, who’s going to be singing “I Got Rhythm“ for us. She looks the best she ever has up to this point, which is a plus. She brings the goods again this week, and takes care of business like she knows how. Another solid solid effort for Melinda. The judges loved it, Simon did as well, except for the end.

Batting cleanup tonight is Chris who no longer needs the initial with the departure of Chris Sligh. Tonight he is going to be singing “Don’t Get Around Much Anymore.” This is my favorite performance from him, which kinda pisses me off, because he’s such an easy guy not to like. But this week, he did a good job. The judges concurred.

We reach the midway point of the night with Jordin. “On a Clear Day” is her choice for the week. I liked her last week, and liked her that much more this week. Great song choice for her. I love watching her perform, and think she turned out a very solid performance. Simon didn’t like it as much as Randy and Paula, but thought she sang it well.

Gina is up next, singing Charlie Chaplin’s “Smile. She gave it a good effort, but I just didn’t like that song for her this week. I feel that she’s got probably the least amount of margin of error to keep from going home, and might be in a little danger. Randy and Paula loved her, but Simon thinks she was way out sang by Melinda and Jordin.

Sanjaya is lucky numero seven tonight. He’s singing “Dancing Cheek to Cheek.” He’s got the lounge singer look down tonight, and sounds like one too. The bad thing is, this is one of his best weeks yet. The judges have more or less gave up on critiquing his singing, but appreciate he’s trying to bring it as an entertainer. Simon, has given up on trying to say anything.

Number eight for the night is Haley. She has understood that she’s going to have to rely on her “sex appeal” to help her along. “Aint Misbehaving” is the song choice for her tonight, and after some coaching by Tony, she’s ready to go. I admit I’m biased, but I really liked her tonight as well. I thought she mixed it up well, and did a great job tonight. Randy thought she nailed it, and Simon, loves her legs, as well most any of the males watching.

LaKisha is closing up shop tonight, taking us home with “Stormy Weather.” Another solid performance, but she’s really starting to bore me, and in my opinion, is starting to lose ground a little bit to Melinda in the dual between the “divas.” Not in danger by any means. Judges loved her as usual, and like I said, she’s easily safe.

So that’s that, and this is how I got them for the night….

1. Melinda
2. Jordin
3. Haley
4. Blake
5. LaKisha
6. Chris
7. Gina
8. Phil
9. Sanjaya

I think the bottom 3 in all actuality may be Haley, Gina, and Phil, since I've started to give up that Sanjaya might go home, although I'm still hoping it's him. If not, I think Gina is the next to go.

See ya next week.

Blake - I thought he did pretty dang good, especially with not going crazy updating the song too much. The judges would have nailed him for it so it was a smart play. I read that he makes his own pants. He should stop that.

Phil - Bye

Melinda - Same thing as every week. Incredible singer, horrible fashion sense.

Chris - I don't know how I feel on this. The part of me that hates him wants to say it wasn't that good. But I kinda feel that's just my bias coming out and that it was ok stuff. Probably safe.

Jordin - Not the song I would have gone with for her, but I think she's doing great anyway. I wasn't aware, well until yesterday, that she had toured with Michael Smith. Makes me care a lot less that they let backup singers in.

Gina - Eh, hard one to call. She really should take out that tongue thing when she's trying to be all sweet and stuff. Distracting. But she did alright with a hard week for her style. Probably didn't win over any new votes though.

Sanjaya - He's laughing along with us, isn't he?

Haley - Good idea to get back to more upbeat stuff and sex it up. Pretty much her only shot to stay. I'm betting she forgets that and tries a ballad next week. Not really very good this week though.

Lakisha - Ok, listen bitch. These people that are professional artists are there to try and help you. So far you've pretty much told all of them to fuck off with their suggestions. Might want to stop doing that. And for God sakes would you quit with the sexy looks already. Oh yeah the singing...it was ok but not her best by any means.

Hmmmm, keep trying to guess when Sanjaya fever runs out. Phil is very likely going home tonight.

Is it me or do the judges seem to be praising everyone in the hopes of convincing people to call in and vote for them instead of Sanjaya?

I don't know if it's going to be this week, but it seems like Blake and Chris are destined to cancel each other out one of these weeks. Especially as long as Sanjaya is still there siphoning off votes from the young girl demographic.

I thought Melinda looked good last night, much better than other weeks. Lakisha though was a disaster.

I know the judges didn't seem to like it, but I rather enjoyed Phil's performance. I thought it had an interesting vibe, really getting in touch with the old crooner sensibility instead of doing a boy band version of an old song like Blake and Chris did. I think he's going to survive this week.

Haley looked great last night, and made herself seem both fun and sexy. Might be a little too late though.

My guess for the bottom three would be Haley, Gina, and Lakisha. I just have a sense that she's not going to have a lot of support this week, as Melinda seems to be consolidating the diva vote. Some of the online wagering sites are putting Melinda at nearly even money to win the whole thing at this point, which is scary with so many people left.

So I'm not crazy in that I thought she had totally ignored Tony Bennett's suggestion about the ending of the song. Stupid bitch ... NOBODY should disrespect Tony Bennett like that ... NOBODY ...

One of my co-workers who never watches the show decided to watch the whole hour last night. Her comment - "they all stink."

Regardless of how they performed the next three going home are Phil, Haley and Sanjaya.

That would leave the Final Six of Doom:

Jordin
Melinda
LaKisha
Chris
Blake
Gina

That's as it should be as they are the most talented six left.

I rather enjoyed last night's performances (except you-know-who). The Tony Bennett-style seemed like a comfortable fit for most of the contestants.

Blake - Quickly becoming a favorite of mine. Solid performance and right up his alley. Beatboxing and funny hooks seem more like icing on the cake with him now rather than a crutch. He can sing and I think people are beginning to take more notice of that.

Phil - Went back to seeming disinterested. I know he probably wants to do well, but he doesn't give that vibe to the audience, IMO.

Melinda - I actually thought this was a little more outside of her comfort zone (unlike Lakisha's choice) and she nailed it again. Most impressive.

Chris - Fine. I'm biased. But his rendition of "Don't Get Around Much Anymore" seemed like a boy performing a man's song.

Jordin - I thought she was superb. Not a very adventurous song, in my opinion, but she was spot on.

Gina - I'm glad she did a slower piece because she was not going to match the light-hearted, up-tempo style of the other contestants. She was OK.

Sanjaya - I can only hope that hairstyle turned off enough voters. Eh, who am I kidding?

Haley - Her hemlines and neck cuts are a sliding scale measure of how much she is in need of votes. Even Simon seemed a bit overwhelmed at her desparation. ("You have nice legs.") She definitely did the right song, though it doesn't appear she took Tony's advice about making the song about one person.

Lakisha - Such a copout doing "Stormy Weather" in my opinion. She's not gonna be able to do the soulful performance every time.

Top two: Melinda and Blake
Bottom two: Phil and Gina with Phil going bye-bye

I will be surprised if Gina outlasts Sanjaya. She just seems like she is neither fish nor fowl in this group, and I think she eventually is just going to end up not being able to compete for votes with the rest of the ones left. Phil and Haley I agree are likely doomed the next two weeks, but I would say Sanjaya goes Top 6, possibly Top 5, and might even sneak Top 4 before the accumulation of voters who have to latch onto another finalist catches up with him and knocks him out.

Oh yes not only did she ignore him, she gave that "I think I'm horribly sexy" look to the camera while doing it simultaneously making me bleed from the ears and eyes.

So she thinks this Tony Bennett guy don't know shit, after also ignoring that nobody Lulu chick and didn't she also kinda ignore some lady named Ross?

Hmmm, let's see single mom going nowhere before this show...yeah I think that qualifies you to second guess these no names they brought in to help you.

And here I was thinking Blake might have an ego problem.

Lakisha stomped around that 2nd half of stormy weather like she was Ray Lewis and it was 3rd & long outside a bar in Buckhead. She is falling behind both Melinda & Jordin.

Gina's tongue stud really annoys the hell out of me and her whole look was just wrong for her last night. Her performance was fine but not memorable.

Haley brought the cleavage along with the legs this week but I don't know if there are enough horny teenage boys out there actually watching to save her.

Blake bored me me with a vanilla performance. Chris was better than usual but that really isn't saying much. Phil bears a striking resemblance to the fabled BatBoy of World Weekly News Fame. I wonder if his real name is Nosferatu ?

Which leaves us with Sanjaya - no wild hair as he says he is going to win america over with this talent. That may play in the "Universe of Sanjaya" but that won't play here on Earth. He should go home but he won't.

I will say that the bottom 3 will be Haley, Gina & Phil with BatBoy going home.

None of the boys have a chance, with the possible exception of Sanjaya, but everyone agrees that if he wins it'll be for the "wrong" reasons, right? </irony>

Blake and Chris continued to give me no reason to figure out how tell them apart last night. Phil looked like he couldn't decide whether to sing or shit himself. Sanjaya probably had his best singing night in a long while, but mostly because the song was right in his wheelhouse and didn't require him to try to show vocal power that he simply doesn't have. I thought I also heard his voice start to crack in the first verse; are we sure we know how old he is?

Gina battled a terrible arrangement and I think I decided she made the most of it.

Haley was surely trying to grab the pre-pube vote with that outfit, but why she disregarded Tony Bennett's advice I'll never know. I can understand not taking all the advice proffered every week and taking a chance on what you believe will make your best performance, but that's Tony Fucking Bennett. The guy has absolutely defined the singing of classic tunes since 1970. And his point was about the song and what the song's about rather than vocal style or ornamentation or whatever; you ignore advice like that from a guy like Tony Bennett at your peril.

I'm still not sold on Jordin for some reason, but she put in a good performance.

Melinda and Lakisha are still the frontrunners in my book. They can both sing and they can both perform. We won't know whether they can pull through in adverse circumstances unless they're somehow challenged in the next 8 weeks. And really, I don't see that happening unless they pull a "New Wave" night or a "Pop Country" night. Any other style I can think of and they'll have an out.

I too would like to say shame on you Lakisha. Shame on you for having your own opinion. Shame on you for making a decision and then going out there and singing your best. Shame on you for wanting to succeed or fail on your own terms.

I can assure you that if wmatistic and Mayhem are calling you a bitch you deserve it. I'm embarrassed for all of us.

If I'm playing golf and Tiger Woods comes up and is like hey, let me give you some tips, I'm doing whatever he says exactly the way he says it. Not ignoring him and saying, "hey thanks buddy but I want to succeed or fail on my own here". Her doing so directly says she thinks she knows better than established stars. It's not smart for her singing or her image and hurts her chances of winning, but hey YOU GO GIRL!

Plus if you're not going to listen to Tony friggen Bennett about HOW TO SING A STANDARD!!!!! who the hell is worthy enough to give you advice??

If I'm playing golf and Tiger Woods comes up and is like hey, let me give you some tips, I would gladly listen to anything he has to say. If I was in some sort of unique televised golfing competition and I did something that he suggested that I thought was wrong and then failed, and was then booted out of that competition and was never on a golfing competition ever again.... I might just wonder what if I did it my way?

Above all, every competitor has the right to succeed or fail on his or her own terms. Lakisha did not do as Mr. Bennett suggested, but she sang well and she survived the vote. If that makes her a bitch, then at least she's a successful one thus far.

OMG I just realized next week is Latin week with J-Lo as the guest. This has the potential to be a wonderfully horrible week. I keep trying to decide which song is best for Sanjaya, Hips Don't Lie or La Cucaracha.
