We’re back tonight with another American Idol, which starts out somberly by acknowledging the Virginia Tech tragedy. Tonight we have the Top 7 and they’re doing country night, AKA Simon will hate everything about every performance night. Martina McBride is the guest coach tonight, and away we go…
Leading off tonight is Phil Stacey singing Keith Urban’s “Where the Blacktop Ends.” I don’t know if it was the song, or the way he sung it, or both, but it just was rough to listen to. He looks like a early favorite to be the next one getting the boot. Randy loved it. Paula loved it. Simon loved it, surprisingly. So I guess I’m alone on it, but I still think he gets the boot.
Jordin is following next, singing Martina McBride’s “ABroken Wing”. She looked really good, and really sang the hell out of the song. Didn’t really move around much, but that song you don’t have to. Just amazing…..I would love to see her win it all. Randy loved it. Paula loved it. Simon not only loved it, but thinks she actually has a chance in hell to win.
The phenom known as Sanjaya is next. Sanjaya is going to be singing “Lets Give Them Something to Talk About” by Bonnie Raitt. It was…well it really doesn’t matter anymore. Wasn’t nearly as good last week for sure, but I’m sure that won’t matter neither. Randy called it karaoke, Paula dodged the question, and Simon blasted it. He’s finally got sick of the Sanjaya-mania, and is ready for it to end. Ryan tries to play keeper, but gets blasted too.
Lakisha is up next singing “Jesus Take the Wheel” from former Idol Carrie Underwood. It was solid, but not her best. Maybe it’s a case of being a fairly recent country song, it sounded rough compared to Carrie’s version. However, most probably didn’t see her doing well this night anyways, so far out of her comfort zone. Randy didn’t like it, Paula didn’t like it neither, and Simon almost gives her warning that she was the one to beat weeks ago, but now needs to be more careful with song selection.
Fifth up is Chris, singing “Mayberry” by Rascal Flatts (I think). It was just kind of there, and I barely remember it even writing this right afterwards. Randy and Paula didn’t like the performance much, and neither did Simon.
Melinda is singing “Trouble is a Woman” by Julie Reeves. She probably picked the best song she could have considering the theme tonight. She sings it well, and even looks comfortable with it as well. I think she continues to put more and more distance on Lakisha week in week out. They love it, and Simon tells her she needs to get rid of the “surprised to get a compliment look” because she shouldn’t be surprised anymore.
Blake is closing up tonight, and he’s going to sing Tim McGraw’s “When the Stars Go Blue”. Great song choice for him. He sang it extremely well and hit the tough part of the song over and over again. Randy loved it, Paula did as well, and Simon thought it was ok.
This is how I got them…
Jordin Melinda Blake Lakisha Chris Phil Sanjaya
I think Lakisha, Phil, and Chris will make up the bottom three. And I think Phil’s finally goin home.
See ya next week.
Co-Winner of the 2006 Time Magazine Person of the Year Award
I love how they started with the thoughts on Virginia Tech and with barely a pause went into "This...is American Idol". So odd.
Phil - I was kinda suprised by this. It really wasn't horrible from a singing perspective. In fact it might have been his best vocal in my opinion. Problem was he walked around like he was being forced to. Was he stoned or something?
Jordin - Ok usually it's stupid for the chicks to do constant slow songs/ballads but screw it this girl should never go off that route. She can rock anything like this and was the top tonight.
Sanjaya - It's not even really making me laugh that much anymore. More of a fastforward moment now.
Lakisha - I'm not sure why but I hate her more and more every week. This was terrible, and she gets zero passes for it being country week. There are a ton of country songs that fit right into her comfort zone. Stupid, stupid song choice...again.
Chris - I still think his voice just works perfectly for country. And Chris, "nasally" is a kind of singing in the same way as "shitty" is.
Melinda - whoa there, and she's back with a vengance. Holy cow just when I think Jordin in closing that gap Melinda went crazy and not only sang a great song but for once looked like she had a neck even. Good stuff.
Blake - Least favorite performance from him by a large margin. Unlike Lakisa there are not a ton of country songs that fit into what he does, but there were certainly better choices than this one. Bleh.
Still haven't had a "shocking" elimination so we're due but Phil probably goes home.
It's sad that the most shocking elimination they could have at this point would be Sanjaya.
I missed the scary mix of Gollum and E.T. that is Phil without a hat as well as various other bits due to the NHL playoffs. Probably nothing important. Not as important as the playoffs, anyway.
This week I finally understood the fuss about Jordin. I don't think someone her age can properly sing a song like that, but she was good enough to make me not care so much.
Sanjaya was Sanjaya.
For the first time I can also understand some of the Lakisha hate. I thought it started well enough, but something went horribly wrong on the chorus. Horribly, horribly wrong. And she looked really confused that the judges thought it was bad. I thought they went easy on her.
Melinda. Awesome? Check.
Blake. His eyes have all the life of a frat boy who has already passed out once tonight and when he's singing the curl in his lip makes it look like he can still taste vomit. I can no longer look at the screen when the camera is on his face. At least now I can tell he and Chris apart: Chris may have sang through his nose (intentionally, apparently), but he came reasonably close to most of the notes. Blake? Not so much.
I would be happy if any of the guys left. I'd potentially put money on it being Phil.
Jordin Killed. Melinda was a strong 2nd. Blake was bad but the judges carried him. BatBoy despite looking creepy again was not horrible. Chris was almost as bad as Rascal Flatts and even tried to defend his nasally singing by saying it's his "style". Lakisha was Horrible & Sanjaya looked like a drag queen.
So who will be the victim of the Fanjayas this week ? I see Lakisha being the first "shocking" elimination. She has steadily gone down hill each week.
(edited by dunkndollaz on 18.4.07 0633) I'm Blind Jimmy Winthrop, Blues singer for the Rich.
I could live with Lakisha going home now. Another reviewer on a related site called her footwear "nice gold hooker boots," and I must concur. Other than that, she gets that diva look on her face when the judges criticize her and you know she's thinking "screw you, Simon, I'm LAKISHA!!"
I thought Phil was pretty good tonight, especially doing the goodbye manhugs to the audience as he sang. He knows he's going home, unless by some miracle we can get rid of Sanjaya and his bandanna. As noted previously in this thread, it's not even funny anymore. Please be gone.
So, Piemen Prediction: Blake, Jordin, Melinda and Chris are safe.
Bottom Three: Lakisha, Sanjaya and Phil (not because I think they will be, no, it's because I wish it to be!).
CRZ had to edit my profile and close my table for me. I am a bad man.
I'm kinda with Simon in not liking the entire country genre but I can enjoy good performances...
...and Phil had a great performance in my eyes. I also agree that he probably can't save himself this week, but I think he found his niche (finally).
Jordin - Amazing again.
Sanjaya - Not only returned to usual crapfest but ruined one of the few songs in the genre that I actually like. Thanks a bunch.
Lakisha - Forced out of her comfort zone again and proved she cannot survive outside of it. Talented singer, just not much to her and that will wear out her welcome with America faster than anything else.
Chris - Smarmy punk grates on me more each week. Read a quote in EW where he said he doesn't care if he wins since he already made it into the top 10. Good, then maybe you won't mind volunteering to get off of my TV until your stupid tour.
Melinda - I'm ready for a Blake/Melinda final now. She was dead on this week. She can do pretty much any genre she wants.
Blake - So talented but just not a good performance this week, in my opinion. I believe one of the judges liked his arrangement and that's what I liked least about it. I still think he's safe, though.
Top 2: Melinda and Jordin Bottom 2: Chris and Phil with Phil leaving (I hope I'm wrong...again)
If Blake goes home (as dialidol suggests he's in trouble) I'm switching to watching Dancing With the Stars. They, at least, have hot women dancing (Cheryl Burke...wow.)
A day later and still no posts on Sanjaya being given the boot? Perhaps I'm cold-hearted, but I found it humorous how long he had to be consoled for. Kinda said to me that he was really buying into himself - which you could see more and more with each week that passed. I'll be shocked if he actually gets to the point of releasing an album on a major label. I think the varnish on his star will have rubbed off in no time, and he will eventually become the joke that most of us already knew he is (in the scope of American Idol singers and their level of talent). The kid clearly has a lot of maturing left if he wasn't somewhat prepared for going home one of these weeks. I can be sympathetic to someone losing something they really wanted bad, but to be that devastated suggests he hadn't even considered it a possibility. This is what happens when you buy into your own hype.
Glad to see Blake in the bottom three. Nobody should be safe when they give bad performances.
Simon seemed unable to restrain himself from smiling from ear to ear once the final three had been announced... and onward until Sanjaya had been voted off the show. That's quite possibly the happiest I've ever seen Cowell.
In dialidol's defense, it's been a shoddy season all-around. I wouldn't be surprised if the results were very close each week, as over HALF of the top 12 were worthy of being voted out from the start. With Sanjaya not even making the bottom three in a long time now, there was little reason to believe he might finally be gone.
Actually Dialidol was dead on for the first time this season with the entire bottom three. Maybe with fewer contestants left they'll become reliable again. Or could be just luck, who knows.
Kinda takes a bit of drama out now, as it seems fairly obvious that Phil, Chris and Lakisha will likely be headed home in some order the next three weeks. Of course anything could happen, but at least we can focus on something other than Sanjaya now.
I was distracted by Mark Buehrle's no-hitter, so I only half-watched the results show, and I missed the performance show this week.
I wouldn't say the the next three weeks are obvious. Phil and Chris both were top 4 this week. Blake hit the bottom three. It seems like there is a lot of room for fluidity at this point among all but Melinda.
I did like how Ryan basically acknowledged that Melinda being sent to one side or the other would kill the suspense as no one on earth thought she'd be going home. Sitting in the middle of the stage was a nice touch.
Phil seems likely to go, but this week he pulled out of the bottom three for the first time in weeks. The only ones left who haven't hit the bottom group so far are Melinda and Jordin. I would assume next week's bottom three would be Phil, Lakisha, and a white boy-band guy. But really, nothing would shock me except for Melinda being down there.
And honestly, I am going to miss Sanjaya. He was the highlight of the show every week for me.

I think they do this every year around this time (final 7). They pick the nicest/best singer at that time and make them choose which group *they* think is the best hoping that they pick the wrong one for the "shock" factor when they are corrected.
I've always thought of it as a real dickish thing for AI to make a contestant do, as did Bo Bice when he decided not to pick a side and just sat in the middle (I believe he was the first one not to pick a side, although people have said that AI producers have told contestants since then during breaks that they have to pick a side "or else")
Originally posted by Excalibur05Blake totally cheated by singing the Corrs (feat Bono) version of Stars Go Blue.
I was mostly pissed that he called it a "Tim McGraw" song (whoever that is *cough* Ryan Adams *cough* ;-) )
For it to be a true Ryan Adams version Phil would have to be drunk, go off on little diva bitchy tirades at the audience, and release so many bad songs in a short span of time that Bob Pollard says "slow down dude!"
I think the reason Sanjaya and Blake received so few votes is that the college students who would have normally voted for them (for different reasons) were shocked by last week's VT tragedy. That makes activities like voting for American Idol seem inconsequential for the time.
I'm gonna have to go ahead and disagree with Cerebus here. I felt the original was scary *because* of the lack of backstory. You've got to remember, Laurie Strode originally had no relation to Michael Myers. That was retconned in the sequel.
