It's country night! Blah, I say, except it ought to be interesting to see George, Fantasia, and Jennifer crank out some honkytonk faves. Mrs. JJD is a big country fan, so at least I have an educated listener with me. Big things are expected of Diana, Amy, and Jasmine tonight, and maybe Matt and Jon Peter from the male side.

Diana leads off with a Martina McBride cover. Mrs. JJD has all of Martina's CDs, so she's excited and say Diana should be good. As expected, she is quite good, and with George and Fantasia up next Diana's kind of laid down the gauntlet. Her last note was darn impressive, but no more than the note Clay held last week on the results show. Mrs. JJD gives a thumbs up.

George sings "I Can Love You like That". It's pretty good, exceeding my lowered expectations, given the country theme.

Fantasia follows George with Willie Nelson's (!) "Always on My Mind". She's not bad, and like George gives a toned-down, subdued performance that shows range from her previous performances. Note to "Idol" contestants: Giving lip to the judges makes you look cocky and is thoroughly unnecessary. Save the comebacks for when you're sitting with Ryan.

John Stephens takes the stage next, as I'm giddy with anticipation for the sucking. Much to my surprise, he's not bad at all, making the right song choice with "King of the Road". At the start of the third verse he blanks out on the words, and I eagerly await the judges admonishments, but they never come, as John was good emough to cover his temporary memory lapse. Four decent-to-very good performances so far.

Camile follows John, and she's so nervous Mrs. JJD remarks they should just put a big pair of headlights on the big screen behind her. She butchers "Desperado" so badly that Don Henley goes out behind his house and shoots a spotted owl in protest. Plus she does this pointing thing while she sings like she's rapping. Ugh.

"Singing Wynonna Judd, here's Jennifer Hudson." Scarier words may have never been uttered since "Let's have Cindy Crawford star in an action movie." Or "Hey Hef, you know who we should put in next month's issue? That Chyna from the WWF." I actually end up not minding the upbeat, energetic part of the song, but the opening, slower verse is bad. Plus she's straightened her hair, like Leah did last week. I'm just saying is all.

Jon Peter Lewis continues the downhill slide with "She Believes in Me". He's so bad Randy and Paula tell him he should DANCE MORE. *I* think he should to the RVD "thumb point to self" when Seacrest refer's to him as "J-P-L". I still can't decide who was the worst of the three between Camile, Jennifer, and Jon Peter, though.

Jasmine is next. A good thing. She sings Faith Hill's "Breathe". A bad thing. Mrs. JJD notes that the song never sounds good live, even when Faith Hill herself sings it. Mrs. JJD went to see Faith Hill and Tim McGraw at the Tacoma Dome a couple of years ago with Paul's girlfriend while Paul and I stayed home, built a dresser, drank some beer, and watched some UFC videos. Very manly, even if the dresser was from IKEA. Where was I? Oh yeah. After shining last week, Jasmine is terrible. Just bad. She's still the cutest one on the show, however.

Former University of Washington Husky and Rose Bowl Champion Matt Rogers follows Jasmine. Can he break the string of bad performances? I say yes, with his surprisingly low-key rendition of Lonestar's "Amazed". Matt the Balladeer is a lot more palatable than Big Goofy Matt was last week. He DOES like to be on TV too much, though, to the detriment of his singing.

Hey, it's Josh Gracin, as if to say, "Here's a guy who would've KILLED on that last song." He's got a CD with a single SCREAMING up the country charts, at least that's what I think he was saying before Ryan cut him off.

LaToya sings the same Garth brooks song Josh sang on last year's country night (which I sadly missed. OK, not so much.) She's really good, so much so that we can't decide whether Matt goes in with the good performaces or the bad ones.

As an aside, it was during LaToya's performance that we noticed just how loud the backup track was. Do the Idols really need a backup track? Couldn't it adversely affect their performance? I thought so.

Finally Amy Adams is up to sing "Sin Wagon" by the Dixie Chicks. Amy was so bad last week I thought she might have to go. This week she was INCREDIBLE. The best performance by FAR. SHe needs to stay with this "Fun Amy" instead of last week's "Celine Dion-wannabe Amy". Very, very good.

The good: Diana, George, Fantasia, John, Matt, LaToya, and Amy
The bad: Camile, Jennifer, Jon Peter, and Jasmine

I'd give Jennifer the "Low Expectations Pass" and make Camile, Jon Peter, and Jasmine the bottom three. And "Pen Boy" would have to go. He was beyond bad. I THINK it will be Camile that goes, which is fine by me.

Wow. That was some analysis there, JayJay.

The piewife and I would concur with most of your astute observations, however, we didn't think J-P-L was so awful as to get voted out. There is some element of unique voice stylings in there somewhere and darn it, people like him.

I would have to think that either Camile or Jennifer will be going home tonight as they were both in the bottom three last week.

Slight difference of opinion on George, also. We thought he was pretty good. Definitely a cut above Fantasia.

As for Diana, as Randy might say she's ah-ite. There's nothing captivating about her. I think Simon hit this one right on the nose. Actually, I agreed with Simon on just about all his calls.

As an aside, I think Paula is beginning to play the heel on this show for me. EVERY time Simon opens his mouth, she interrupts him! Shut up, Paula. At least let him get his thoughts out before you shout him down.

Pieman/Piewife Prediction for Exile: Jennifer.

I think Jennifer is gone as well ...

I think Jon Peter Lewis will be one of the last five ... he's got a big following it appears ...

And how freakin' long was that note that Diana held? ... Geez, that little girl has some pipes.

Just to clarify, I DON'T think JPL will get voted out, I think it will be Camile. I expect JPL to stick around for some time. However, if I were voting based SOLELY ON LAST NIGHT, "Pen Boy" would be my choice. He needs to stay away from that kind of performance in the future.

I usually treat this show like it's ecoli... avoid it at all costs; but last night, while flipping channels, I accidentally caught the tall red headed guy doing King of the Road and thought I was on the local PBS station. and left it on. He was really good.

Then I found out what I was watching and changed the channel.

I flipped back during the channel rotation and heard that god awful Desperado cover and just turned it off completely.

Camille should be ashamed of herself for that version - it was painful to sit through - cute or not, she is a candidate to go home to maui.......scooby dooby king of the road will make it a few more weeks but will probably get killed on Disco Night......and when will people learn that it never does any good to talk back to and dis Simon - he certainly didn't deserve the heap of whatever from Fantasia (who I was actually glad to see can do a little more than just screech one note loudly)

Results are on up against Survivor so AI gets the small corner of the picture in picture......good bye Jerri on one channel and Jennifer or Camille on the other

I'm not a regular viewer of the show but I watched a bit last night during the commericals of what I was watching. I saw the Desperado girl and Fantasia.

A couple comments which are probably redundant:

1. Can someone please shoot Randy Jackson? He's worse then the whitest of white people trying to talk "street". It sounds forced and he's like 5 years behind on all the lingo anyways. Aiiight dawg? Plus he looks fucking disturbing now that he's not so fat.

2. The Desparado girl has a good look and her voice sounded OK but don't do Desperado. She should have picked a different song. They do pick their own songs, right?

3. Fantasia seems like she should win, even though I haven't seen all the people in the show. Simon was actually giving her a compliment and it totally went over her head.

Also, would it kill Paula to have anything constructive to say? This is the 3rd one, she should be over the fact that she's actually relevant in 2004 and SAY SOMETHING.

Renegade Raine says:

Amy (surprisingly), Fantasia, John, and LaToya were the performers that were the best (to me, anyways) for the night.

Jasmine, Camille, Jon, and Matt were the worst.

My prediction is that either Camille or Jennifer gets the cut...I'll say Camille. I sure hope it's not Jasmine though...

Well i did watch it this week after saying last week I didn't mainly because my usually show Gilmore Girls wasn't on. Hey I know Gilmore Girls isn't the manliest show in the world, but you can't talk! You watch American Idol!

Well as an actual country music fan, I have to say that was horrible. Can Latoya sing? Yes. Can she sing country? No. It might have sounded alright to the teeny boppers who watch the show but as someone who is a country fan she butchered a song that should not be sang in any other way other than country. Fantasia singing a Willie Nelson song was just weird. Camille was horrible, and I've liked her before tonight. The girl who sang the Faith Hill song was the worst, especially since she sang a more challenging song than the rest, and no, Faith Hill definitely does not sound bad live. George is probably my favorite but his performance this week wasn't that great, same for JPL. Jennifer was also bad.

I'd say the only good ones were Diana, John, Matt, and Amy.
Mainly because they didn't sound horrible and they weren't too off from sounding like the country genre.

I'm not saying the others aren't good, Latoya, George and Fantasia most certainly can sing from what i've seen, this just isn't their genre and if you're going to do a genre based show it should sound like that genre, not just be country songs. I don't even know why they do a country genre since country singers aren't really good singers, it's more about having a unique voice. And American Idol is really more about having a really good voice.

Also, I wondered how that country singer from last season felt when Paula (I think) said that Amy's performance was the best they've ever had in the country genre.

Faith Hill sounds good live. Her national anthem is so good they should just use it for every sporting event. I've never heard anyone (including her) perform a good version of "Breathe". I just don't think it's song that lends itself to a live performance, which is why I said "uh oh" when it was said Jasmine was singing it.

Mrs. JJD and I decided that if they do a fourth season of "American Idol" they should have an episode where the other singers have to pick the songs. You know that would've worked this week...

That chick that did the horrible Desperado cover sucked waaaayyyyyyyyyy more than Matt did. Granted, I hate the song he sang, and it probably wasn't the best choice for him to sing. Camille stunk, and should be thankful she's still in it. Besides, the Clint Black and Johnny Cash covers aside, Desperado isn't even really a country song.

I think Matt got robbed here. He wasn't going to win the whole contest, but he's better than 11th place out of this lot.

The problem is that once you get to this level, it's just a popularity contest. I think it was pretty plain that Diana was not one of the three worst performers, yet there she was in the bottom three.

I think theme shows work pretty well, to disagree with some of the other posters. The judges are looking for some range and depth to the performers. If they can sing more than one genre of music, they will end up being better performers.

PS - I also want to know if Kim watches this show. I would appreciate her take on these contestants!

I'm kind of torn. It's not like Matt was going to be around for more than a couple more weeks, so it's kind of OK that he's been voted out. OTOH, you've got Camile standing RIGHT THERE. It reminds me of the old Denis Leary line: "John Lennon take five bullets to the chest...Yoko Ono's standing right next to him and NOT ONE BULLET." Camile really didn't deserve to make it through this week.

I suspect Diana will be around for some time now. The talented ones seem to get a boost when they end up in the bottom three, like America just thought everyone *else* would've voted for Diana this week. That happened last year with Ruben.

Kimberly Locke was quite good, I thought. Mrs. JJD remarked that she would by her CD based on the song she sang last night.

I just happened to flip it over last night when the big guy, Matt?, started singing some country song at the end to Simon and Simon looked like he had NO IDEA what to do. Very amusing. Too bad that guy lost.

That was one of the greatest moments in the history of that show. Simon looked so wonderfully uncomfortable.

I've looked up and down in the thread -- and I'm surprised nobody's mentioned the bruhaha over the Cowell middle finger at Fantasia incident.

Matt deserved to get canned because he's a big grotesque ham who sucks. Canned ham. Aside from the fact that sweet sweet justice was served, the girls of America have their three non-threatening pretend if-not-borderline-gay boyfriends to choose from now, and then there's this big beefy dirty old man with rosacea? What else was going to happen? The will of our great nation impresses me once again. U-S-A U-S-A U-S-A

Camille has been awful but she's sticking around because a) she's a hot piece of ass and b) the power of the Filipino vote cannot be DENIED. Give us a role model we can look up to already. Unfortunately, she continues to suck and everyone will give up on her soon enough. Even straight men are sure to turn on her when next she decides to butcher, say, the Coors Light remix of Tom T. Hall's "I Love" or some other song near and dear to their hearts. Poor thing. That doesn't mean I think she's any good, I'm just sticking up for my peoples, what up sister.

I've been blogueing about Idol off and on but nothing really inspired me other than the Wild Card show if you're desperate for more of my insightful commentary. My less insightful commentary is as follows:

LaToya - if you've been singing at weddings and haven't ELECTRIFIED anyone enough to make it to the big time yet, then honey I'm sorry.
Jennifer - substitute "on cruise ships" for "at weddings"
John IV - strangely appealing but I fear he will turn pathologically psychotic a la Clay last year, eew
Diana - she was already on "America's Most Talented Kid," I think it's about time she give up. Appealing only to people who are hot for teenage gymnasts, i.e. perverts
Jasmine - Another creepy teenage gymnast, but at least she's less dislikeable than Diana
Amy - boring boring boring boring boring
George - I like him but that doesn't necessarily mean I care if he wins or not
Fantasia - I had to go to the site to remember who the last female was on the show, imagine that
John Peter Mellencamp - a ghastly horror who must be stopped.

Shoot, I should have saved all this for the blogue. Chris: "And you said you're not getting involved this year?" I meant I wasn't going to make any VOTES!!! It's a big difference!!! My text messaging bill for Ruben last year, forget about it.

I am made of blue sky and golden light, and I will feel this way forever.
