Idol's back minus Lindsey Cardinale, and this week's theme is "Billboard's #1 Hits". At least this week the contestants won't be able to blame a poor song choice on being pigeon-holed into a theme that doesn't fit them. (Not that they really could anyway...one week they should have a "songs from the UK chart of June 5, 1971", or something.)

Ryan's sporting a T-shirt that says "I ::heart:: Expensive T-Shirts". Cute. They show us the "here's the theme, gang" clip from last week, and the guy who compiled the list let them know they have over 930 songs to choose from.

Anthony Fedorov starts us off with "I Knew You Were Waiting". A pet peeve of mine is when they pick songs that were originally duets and try to sing them by themselves. It always messes up the arrangement. Fortunately, I'm more distracted trying to remember who actually sang this song to focus on Sergei's performance, which isn't horrible, but to me he sounds exactly like he did last week, which got him thrown under the bus. Also, on the last couple of notes I was mesmorized by Anthony's traech-hole like it was the "Q" on the NyQuil bottle. ("The Q is talking to me, theQistalkingtome!") Ah, thank you Randy for filling me in that it was a George Michael/Aretha Franklin song. That would've BUGGED me. Sergei gets high marks from the judges, and a fun moment is when Simon derides Sergei a bit for trying to be sexy when he's not, to which Paula counters by asking the crowd "Girls, was he sexy?" and getting a positive response. Naturally Simon skipped over whether the singing was good or bad.

Carrie Underwood says she picked "Alone" by Heart because an '80s rock song would break her out of her country mold. Oh, and something's trying to break out my pants because she did her hair all like that and went semi-"Bad Carrie" on us. Scrumptous. And she sounds FANTASTIC. I don't think I heard one bit of country-ness in the song, and she really put herself back in with the favorites this week. Simon goes so far as to say that he thinks Carrie will win and sell the most albums yet, though I think the blood may not be entirely reaching his brain if he's saying that.

Scott Savol gives us the backstory on why he chose "Against All Odds", and I'm rolling my eyes repeatedly. Why can't you just pick a song because you thought you would sing it well? Anyone? Aw, and he's got this goofy Ruben-ish hat thing going, too. At least he ditches the hat early on, and he...he...TOSSES THE GLASSES TOO! That was kind of like seeing Marty Jannetty go through the Barber Shop window...I never thought Scott would turn on the glasses like that. Anyway, this was really good, too, although the judges have me paranoid about liking people after last week when thay hated EVERYBODY. They all really like Scott as well, and they seem sufficiently pleased that they lit a fire under people after last week's debacle.

Bo Bice picks "Time in a Bottle" because of blah, blah, blah. This should be interesting, at least. This ends up being really good, though, and while Bo seems to be saying "Look, I'm VERSATILE! REALLY!" in anticipation of getting a bum-theme one of these weeks, he's pretty much earned at least one free pass by now, I'd think. Simon's really got his finger on what makes Bo seems so good, saying he never is performing like he's in a competition, which earns him a kiss from Paula.

Nikko Smith comes back, and when he says "I picked a song from Sisqo" I'm all "YES! Thong, th-thong, thong, thong!", but no, it's a song called "Incomplete". I have no idea what this is SUPPOSED to sound like, but that's maybe not so bad because even Nikko Smith is ON tonight. And no one looks as much the PIMP week in and week out as Nikko. When he ditched that jacket I half-expected to see Paula's panties go flying up onto the stage. SHe must've doubled her dosage tonight. When Simon compliments Nikko he gets another kiss from Paula, so I wonder if he's going to deliberately start ripping people just to get her to back off.

Vonzell Solomon follows Nikko and her song choice is "Best of My Love". She's the first to follow Bo's trend-setting (apparently) climb onto the backdrop behind the judges. Alas, she's not the first to fall off, but if that happens to anyone it would be the greatest moment in "Idol" history, especially if it was Scott Savol because we could all make "Humpty Dumpty" jokes. She's actually really good, too, and Mrs. JJD thinks this has been the best "Idol" show so far, maybe ever. It's gotta be the best with this many people so far, although Constantine and Mikalah are luring to mess it up.

Speaking of Constantine he's next and his song choice is "I think I Love You"?! "The Partridge Family"? REALLY? 930 songs and you pick THAT? It wasn't BAD, but really off-the-wall in a distracting way. Plus, he was at 0.8 on the Stapp-meter. David Cassidy never had to preen and sneer like that. He gets the first batch of negative feedback from the judges, though Paula more-or-less predicts that his female fans will vote him through.

Nadia Turner said she had a hard time picking a song, which I find hard to believe, and she went with Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time". She starts out behind the judges and DAMN she's got a giant mohawk-thing going that's like six inches tall! Dang. And I pity the fool (sorry) who has to listen to her sing this because it's not good at all. I think she's lucky that there aren't, say eight people left, because this was a really bad song choice for her.

During one of the semifinal episodes, I thought Mikalah sounded like Taylor Dayne. Well, she's picked Taylor Dayne's "Love Will Lead You Back", and she's way over her head. She doesn't know what to do when the microphone is one the stand, so she points at the camera like Camile did, and she totally misses on some of the notes. After the goodness of the first six performances this show is kind of going down hill.

Anwar Robinson should pick things back up, although I secretly hoped he'd pick "Girl You Know It's True", but sadly that peaked at #2. Instead he picks Chaka Khan's "Ain't Nobody". Okaaaaaaay. I'm now utterly convinced Anwar won't win. At times, the only charismatic thing he has going is his hair and he needs to have his song-choosing privilges revoked. It wasn't all bad or anything, but Anwar was really one of the favorites going in and he's gone downhill like George Huff did last year.

Jessica Sierra closes the show with "Total Eclipse of the Heart". She semi-unleashes the twins this week, and she looks really good and sounds really good. She does this annoying this with the camera, like she's trying to flirt with it but can't so she keeps making eye contact with the view but then she looks down at the foot of the camera. It's very odd. I didn't agree that Jessica was in Carrie's classs this week, but she definitely was one of the better performers.

After such a promising start, I think the bottom three should be Anwar, Nadia, and Mikalah, based purely on this week. I can see Scott and/or Sergei taking the place of the guys, but I've got to believe that Mikalah is going home this week.

AND THEN THERE'S THIS LITTLE TIDBIT:

Uh, would this be a bad time to point out that she can't really sign well at all?(Not that THAT has stopped others from being a star)...

In my book, at this point Carrie and Bo are so far above and beyond everybody else that it is going to take a real slam dunk performance for somebody to break that up.

Call me cynical, but this works out just a LITTLE too well for Fox. Now they get an additional day of their top rated show, and get to fill in Point Pleasant's time slot for a week which is on the verge of being cancelled.

Note to Constantine: If you can't even top a Jerry O'Connell performance, just do another song. Thanks.

Plus, it puts the results show on opposite the last half of The Apprentice.

Plus, plus, we don't have to watch "Life on a Stick."

We voted numerous times for Scott and Anwar, the Pie Family Favorites. At least, we think they need the most help in staying in the competition. We also like Bo and Carrie, but figure we don't need to waste finger effort on them.

This really smells of a ratings ploy, though. They've been using the same numbers for at least two years now and this week they mess up the graphics? It seems unpossible.

For the bottom three I'd add Vonzell to the bottom and make Constantine the perennial bottom one. He just can't sing a lick.

My peve is when they take a group song and pipe up the background vocals to drown out the singer.

I'd like confirmation from Casey Kassum that Chaka Khan ever had a Billboard top 40 #1. I don't think so.

Mikalah sounded like shit. And is ugly. And reminds me so much of what I hate about Fran Drescher.

Packman thank your for that. I couldn't remember what movie I'd heard that song in recently.

Missed the show on Tuesday so I watched last night. Simon looked rather PO'd that he had to sit through the whole show again. I can't help but think that the repeat will actually help those that were in danger as it gives their supporters the chance to call/text that much more to try and save them. Mikalah needs to go and so does Constantine. I'll flip over during a timeout of the hoops tonight to see who got the boot but I certainly won't watch the whole show.

Carrie blew my mind with that Heart song. I can't believe how awesome she sounded. It was like Ann Wilson's spirit suddenly inhabited a gorgeous blonde. And YES...the 80s satellite-dish-bangs-AquaNet look was raging hot.

You know, I can't get her preformance out of my mind. I was listening to the original on the radio today but switched the station because it wasn't as good. Too bad she didn't sing it later in the competition where the songs are full-length. I'm sure we'd have had another one of those "Clay Aiken" moments.

Point Pleasant Is Gone

Fox announced that the March 17 episode of Point Pleasant was the low-rated show's last, TV Guide Online reported. In an online posting, executive producer Marti Noxon told fans that she was relieved the show ended when it did.

"[Tonight's] episode didn't quite come together the way I would have liked," Noxon reportedly said. "And I would have hated for that to be our final word."

As previously reported, the final six episodes of Tru Calling will air in Point Pleasant's 9 p.m. Thursday timeslot, starting March 31.

Mikalah was finally put out of my misery...definitely worth the extra night.

I've been watching since the finale of season 1...and I gotta say, this is already the best season I've watched. A lot more talent, and this time, grabbing it from different genres..very good season.

I agree with you there. I started with the S1 finale too. but I missed last season from about halfway through the auditions to the end. I couldn't stand last year once they made it clear that they weren't looking for "good" singers, just "unique" ones. Man, did they ever give up on THAT quick going into this year.

I thought maybe S2 with Clay and Ruben was a fluke until this week. Last week was a lot of people singing along to the music, but this week got some real preformances from a few of them.

While I will agree that the singers this year are better than they have been recently, none of them have impressed me enough yet for me to say that I will to buy their CD when it comes out.

Adios Mikalah - we won't miss you

Not the best one, but I think this her reaction right after Simon told her she was going to win, and sell more records than any Idol yet.

This guy has MPEG links, but they're down right now, and I don't know personally if they ever worked.

It's my understanding that it's the #3 sitcom on television, behind only "Two and a Half Men" and "My Name Is Earl". (That godawful new Julia Louis-Dreyfus show hadn't premiered when I read that, so it might be ahead of it now too.)
