I can't say I'm totally immune to this - I remember myself and three friends playing Gauntlet as four Valkyries for nearly twelve hours one weekend (it was free) - but work, friends, and men (sadly, in that order  ) tend to keep me occupied.

| #5 Posted on 6.6.02 2022.48 | Having been a MUD junkie for many years, I was asked to play Everquest many times, and have refused because Wienerville is about as much online addiction as I want to handle 
Everquest does have features where you can't logoff easily, where the game never really ends, and you have to play hour-long sessions. Add to that the fact that you are paying a monthly fee to play, plus the social aspect of Internet chat, and I can see how people hardly leave the house.
I can see people crying over online losses, whether it be character death, online treasures, online relationships, or even losing the priviledge to play. But what really sucks is losing your job, your real-life friends, your family, and your life.

| #6 Posted on 7.6.02 1433.19 | Let me just clarify. I am not laughing at him for his suicide or for being a geek. Hell, I play D&D and Magic: The Gathering. I know way more about RPG mechanics than is probably healthy. At the same time, I know where the line between fantasy and reality is drawn. I have a tendancy to get pissed off if I lose at a video game, or if things get erased (I lost about 60 + hours of Diablo II stuff), but to cry over it? That's a little ridiculous.
The funniest thing about this article though is that it makes the kid and his mom look like complete idiots.
How can you not laugh at the kind description of him as a shy nice kid, followed by "A fellow high school student described him as a geek."? Or the addiction "expert" and his line about "EverCrack"? And I'm sorry, but if you are too hooked to ANYTHING, to not take a daily shower, then I will laugh at you.

Never gotten into online gaming though (aside from an occasional game of chess), because I'm not digging on the fact that one has to pay a monthly fee.
That's actually one of the reasons I probably won't buy Final Fantasy XI-- which is being designed as an MMORPG. If I'm gonna shell out 60 clams for the game, up-front, why should I have to pay another $10 or so every month to keep playing it?
I like having the freedom to just STOP PLAYING THE DAMN GAME whenever I feel like it. I get to a certain point, save, and then my finger pushes the on/off switch. It's not rocket-science.
Having said that... there's this woman at work who's always talking about EverQuest, so I know to stay the hell away from it. Ha!

I'm inclined to agree, there. I mean, I'm all about the RPGs, and I would really enjoy a way to actually have one in a world that I could interact with other people and actually ROLE-PLAY in the game, but right now... paying ten-plus bucks a month to play someone else's idea of a character and spend most of my time trying to ignore a thousand guys named "AZzRAP0R" braying like jackasses while they powerlevel all day just isn't my idea of a good time.
Although.. I have to say this. The ONE online game I'd get, and pay for? GTA. How freakin' fun would that be? As long as they kept the population fairly low in each city, that is. I'd hate to see lines of people stretching for blocks for the chance to steal a car.
