Apparently he was shot during a home invasion.

Richard Sharpstein, an attorney who represented Taylor in a criminal case, said the player's father told him his son had been shot in the leg and there was much bleeding because the femoral artery was severed.

The Miami Herald reported paramedics found Taylor with a gunshot wound to the groin. A family friend who did not want to be identified told ABC-TV 10 in Miami that Taylor was shot twice.

Investigators were still interviewing the girlfriend and other relatives who were in the home to try to determine what happened, Perez said.

I can't help but feel like there's recently been an alarming increase in pro athletes being robbed in their homes. There were a couple of cases in the NBA and now there's this. I wish him a speedy recovery.

I was thinking the same thing. This is awful.

Sean Taylor is currently my favorite Redskin. I was lucky to be able to watch him in person in his pro debut against the Buccaneers and you could tell there was something special about him. He was a force on the field. We all waited for the next awesome Sean Taylor moment. Go to youtube and find videos of his hits. He was great.

I don't care if he ever makes it back to the field. I just want him to recover and be ok.

Hail to the Redskins!

This came completely out of left field, as ESPN was reporting earlier that Sean Taylor was responsive to simple signals. And considering that he was shot in the leg, one would imagine that amputation should have been an option. I have a feeling something went terribly wrong that no one could have anticipated.

Just terrible news.

Reading the article that ESPN (sports.espn.go.com) has up, it almost seems like they may have overstated how responsive he was:

There had been concern about the amount of blood that he lost, but this is still a shock.

Ladies and gentlemen, the following public service message is brought to you by your friends from D-Generation X, who would like to remind each and every one of you that if you're not down with that, we've got two words for you...

I don't think it was the damage to his leg from the gunshot that killed him. I think it was the blood loss from having that femoral artery ripped apart. From what I've read, that's the one blood vessel you don't want anything to happen to.

Having just watched his team scratch and claw and fight to the death against my boys not two days ago, I can't imagine what his teammates are going through right now - whether this is the last bit of news that will send them into a tailspin, or whether this will inspire them.

Senseless.

While the switch from Cena to RVD should alleviate some complaints, the inevitability of the belt's return to Cena (note where Summerslam is this year) and the poor initial showing by the new ECW are enough to keep the indicator where it is for now. The pieces are in place, though, especially on RAW, for improvements to be made to the IWC's psyche in the near future.

Just heard about this. Horrible, horrible news. Phenomenal player with massive potential (as an Eagles fan I don't think I saw a safety who controlled Westbrook better), but more importantly we're talking about a 24 year-old kid losing their life, and a child losing their dad.

For what it's worth the BBC's reporting that it was a result of blood loss from the femoral artery. Had really hoped and expected he would pull through though.

Rest in peace sir.

Such a shame. One of my favorite Youtube videos that I watch from time to time is during an FSU/Miami game a few years ago. Greg Jones runs up the middle and just plowed over Taylor like he wasn't there. I don't say this to make fun, but the reason I loved watching so much is because of the immense respect I had for Taylor as a player. I saw him just destroy people with brutal hits time and time again. Every time we played Miami he scared me more than anyone on those teams. Every time the ball went over the middle I expected the worst. That was the only play I recall someone getting the best of him.

I don't think I'll get the same feeling watching that video anymore.

I sure hope they catch whoever did this.

I'm just at a loss for words. I thought he was getting better from the reports last night.

I went shopping last night and it was amazing to see so many Skins jerseys being worn after a loss and 90% of them were for #21.

We don't retire numbers here in DC (which sucks) but if any needs to be, his has to be on that list.

Sounds like he had a history of problems. Just getting his act together? a very sad day. Hopefully this will be a wake up call for all professional athletes.

Latest news from the local news says the bedroom door was burst open by the perp and shot at Taylor twice, hitting him once.

He never made it downstairs and according to the GF, the phone lines were cut and she had to make the call from her cell, delaying the rescue teams.

Oh, and something I didn't know, the girlfriend is actor Andy Garcia's daughter and highschool sweetheart.

It's too early to tell yet, but there is at least some thought that perhaps this was his past catching up with him. (So the lesson would be to be careful what kind of company you keep and what kind of activities you get involved with.) The whole thing with the phone lines being cut, no items actually taken, bursting into the bedroom firing, etc. makes it sound like that this might not have been just a random act. But as I said, it's too early to tell, the investigators will have to sort it all out.

Popped onto the Redskins message board. Some of the folks are saying that Portis will be wearing the #21 at Sunday's game vs. Buffalo.

Just goes to show the type of person Brady is. $10 million is more than enough a year for anyone (sans Mike Tyson) to live comfortably on. He know helms a dynasty and is seen as even more of a hero to the fans of New England.
