About all I remember from Haig was the famous "I'm in charge" line. I don't even know WHY he would even be doing a Press Conference instead of a press secretary. Either way, he served in government a long time. RIP General!

Because the president's press secretary was shot as well. and he said "I'm in control here" - because Bush was out of town as well. I believe he was currently in the air on the way back to DC when Dutch was shot.

We'll be back right after order has been restored here in the Omni Center.

I get that it was largely blown out of proportion, but I still found it amusing the way he said he'd "check" with Bush in case anything happened. Haig's contempt for Bush (which came out pretty clearly in the 88 primaries) was already on display there...

It's up on the web. Not sure how long it'll stay there, but I highly recommend reading it. If you scroll about halfway down, you'll see links for each of the eight chapters in one of those small boxes. http://www.msnbc.msn.
