As much as it hurts me to say, I don't think the Yankees make it to the World Series. Detroit seems too tough.
Tigers in five.

Your attempt at a Bill Simmons-style reverse jinx is duly noted, StaggerLee.

The worst part is that overall, Russell Martin has sucked this year. Raul Ibanez has been a pretty average hitter this year. They just both are definitely capable of taking the ball out of the park at any time, and when you have a lineup like New York's, SOMEONE is bound to hit that solo homer.
If you look at the Yankees' overall playoff stats, as a team they're hitting like garbage. A-Rod gets all of the heat but Granderson, Swisher, Cano and Ichiro also all sucked it up in the ALDS. The only guys who seem to be hitting are Jeter and Teixeira.
With all this being said, I'm still picking the Yankees to win in six just because Detroit's lineup has even more holes and they won't get Verlander until Game Three.
"It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone." --- Bart Giamatti, on baseball
LEGEND OF THE FALL: Raul Ibanez is now a legend. No matter what happens from here on out, he will be worshipped forever at Old-Timer's Days here in the Bronx.
In the ninth, up four runs, the Tigers turned to shaky closer Jose Valverde. He gave up a two-run homer to Ichiro Suzuki, which cut the lead in half. After Robinson Cano struck out, Mark Teixeira walked to set up Ibanez.
Ibanez nailed an 0-1 pitch into the right-field seats to tie the game.
Ibanez is the first player ever with three home runs in the ninth inning or later in a single postseason, according to ESPN Stats & Information.
to this...
Derek Jeter, the Yankees' captain, fractured his ankle in the top of the 12th inning, and manager Joe Girardi just announced he will miss the rest of the playoffs.
The Yankees are REALLY going to regret not ending it in the 10th when they had Gardner on 3rd.
Also, there's no way we see Jose Valverde again for the rest of the playoffs. Leyland would have to be out of his mind.
There are very few times in my life when I regret having DirecTV. Tonight, as they went to extra innings, a slight (very slight) rainstorm came and I lost signal. Came back on during the post game show, so I missed all the Ibanez heroics, and The Captain going out. Tough break. Time to see how tough the Yankees are.

It's rare to wonder if a 7-game series needs a mercy rule, but this series needed a Steinbrenner to throw in the towel for his team. This was total destruction!
If George Steinbrenner was still alive, he'd blow up the entire lineup within a month. Let's find out if Hank and Hal have that in them. If they do, say goodbye to A-Rod, Granderson, Cano, and Swisher.
Its already been in the works to let Swisher walk. Cano isn't going anywhere, without him being on fire late, the Yankees never take the crown. Nobody is going to eat A Rods contract (unless the dodgers just go crazy). He needs to stay AL if he plans on passing Aaron and Bonds. Henderson is staying out, he won a lot if games with his bat early in the season, and they did invest in him. I think it's more telling how great Detroit's pitching has been than an indictment of the Yankees failing.

I hate when people say this. When George was at his most over-reactive in the 80's he ran off a lot of great young players and was the reason the franchise was down in the dumps. Once guys like Gene Michael ran things they started to turn around. Anyway ARod is untradeable as he's due 114 mil over the next five years and is turning 38 next year. Trading Cano would be insane as he is the Yankees best player and you don't dump players over 30ish terrible at bats. Swisher is likely gone and he will be a big loss, as he's a terrific regular season player and a big reason why they made the playoffs. Granderson will be back too.
Congrats indeed to the Rockies, if for no other reason than for keeping alive the possibility that a UT quarterback might win both the Super Bowl and the World Series in the same year.
