Keyes' Daughter Calls Self 'Liberal Queer'
Originally posted by the AP Maya Marcel-Keyes, 19, addressed a rally sponsored by the gay-rights group Equality Maryland, saying she was motivated to speak out because of her rocky relationship with her parents and the recent death of a friend who had fallen ill after being thrown out of the house by his family.
With this being HIS OWN daughter, Alan Keyes decides to stop short of calling her any names.
Originally posted by the AP In a statement issued Monday night, Keyes said: "My daughter is an adult, and she is responsible for her own actions. What she chooses to do has nothing to do with my work or political activities."
You've got to admire Maya's bravery for coming out the way she has, in the face of her father's outspoken views. What must daddy think, though?

| #2 Posted on 15.2.05 1644.41 | Originally posted by the AP Marcel-Keyes said she received an outpouring of support when disclosing her sexual orientation, but her friend did not.
"Like me, he grew up queer in a conservative household," she said. But where she got hundreds of e-mails, offers of a place to stay and a college scholarship, "he'd been out there two years and had gotten nothing."
"And the worst part is, he isn't the only one," Marcel-Keyes said.
It took a lot of balls for Maya to speak out but it seems like she's going to be alright. The real issue is that there are kids out there with parents who'd rather kick their kid out and hide their embarrassment than live with a 'hedonist'.
I've got to believe that Keyes has thought this over long enough to realize that calling your daughter names is not a good idea. Where does Keyes stand on the issue? I thought I heard something about him saying that it's not about whether or not being queer is a choice but people shouldn't give into the desires. If that's the case then I can see him playing up the pro-family love of his daughter while still saying the things his daughter chooses to do are not right with God. I don't know Keyes politics that well but I've gotten the impression that he's more concern with his family image than his religious image. | Teppan-Yaki

Anyhoo -- Maya had a Xanga blog, and the Dem bloggers jumped on it and its content, since she outed herself on there.
Once again, fun and frivality in IL politics. :D | Stilton

Here is her blog (xanga.com) in case you were wondering.
In many ways, it's looks like a typical young woman's/girl's website with angels and flowers. In other ways, because of who she is, and who her parents are, it's more significant.
I applaud her bravery. It must be a terrible thing to have one of the country's most outspoken bigots for a father when you're young and already dealing with the ordinary pressures of being gay and coming out. Good for her. She sets a fine example.

Not surprising to me.

Alan Keyes: Father of the Year
You'd have to think that if Dick Cheney did the same thing, it'd be political suicide. Of course, it's not like Keyes has much to lose anyway. He's already a political joke as it is.
Just sad, all around.
