Surprised I didn't see this posted here sooner, but anyways...

It appears that there was quite an error last night on Adult Swim as the season finale of "The Big O" was to air at 11PM. Instead, a previously aired episode was mistakenly shown. After dealing with quite the uproar on their message boards, they have re-scheduled the "Family Guy" episode from Nov. 2nd at 11:00PM to the following week and will show "The Big O" finale in its place.

While I was one of the disappointed fans to see it missing last night, I am very glad to see Cartoon Network make up for this error.

I drove the Hummer. Sorry 'bout that.

Maybe if the dudes at William Street paid a little more attention to their highest rated show's season finale instead of planning a party and buying beer, it might not have happened.

I'm very disappointed about this, and the angry cynical person in me wants to believe that this was really a juvenile Halloween prank. Although, I probably believe it was a mistake, but I've yet to hear a formal explanation of why the mistake was made. I watched a little of the webcam of their party last night, and I was annoyed that MC Chris and others were yelling at people on the boards who were upset. It wasn't the viewers' mistake, people will watch a favorite show and get really excited about what could probably be the final episode for the forseeable future and it isn't aired. Since no formal announcement or apology was yet to be made, yeah people are going to be fucking pissed off and are going to jump to conclusions since they aren't given one. I think the William Street crew has a lot of nerve to make fun of the people that keep them in business and watch their programming.

Ah, so were you 'TheVile1' on the AS boards? I almost asked, but didn't really feel like it. I registered on their boards (and lurked) until about 3am last night. What a mess. I don't believe them about the 'screw up'. The webcam watchers had said that they turned Adult Swim and Big O on at 11pm on a big screen tv at the party, and that everyone was sitting down to watch it. Yet nobody said anything over the cam until well after midnight about the 'screw up'. And this was after some guy dropped by their party with a 'Big O is Displeased' sign and just stood in from of the webcam.

I'm pretty sure that it was only after a couple dozen 'Boycott Adult Swim' threads had started with complete lists of all the companies who had bought ad space last night, that their Halloween joke became some kind of mixup.

Either that, or nobody at the party ever watches Big O.

Didn't the black screen bits last week say something like:

This is the last new Big O episode.
Next week, Big O goes into reruns.
[joke here]

Because I could've sworn I saw that (twice - on the WC repeat too.)

(Maybe it's a sweeps bit, with the Family Guy show. Moving it to November takes care of that.)

The Halloween bits were eh.

What they said was:

Next Week - Last new Big O episode
After that - Reruns
And then something about playing baseball with your sisters hamster, and then replacing it before she notices it's gone.

Which may or may not be a hint that they were going to replace our episode 26 with episode 20.

Well, at least they're gonna fix it, and surprisingly at the expense of "Family Guy," which is AS's biggest show too. That says a certain something to me.

Tho I think it might have the backfire effect of 86'ing their webcam parties after sneering at the audience and that one girl dropping the F-Bomb. Man, I wish MY job was watching cartoons and liquoring up interns.

As for the numbers game, as I understand it, "Big O" was doing quite well and building an audience. Time will tell if they pissed off everyone following the show and broke the ratings momentum, but it was definitely a black eye for CN considering it was a show they co-produced and the kick-off for one of their higher-rated blocs.

Yeah the Adult Swim boards were a huge mess last night. Though I cannot blame the posters or board members for getting upset or overeacting over what happened. The mods could've possibly calmed things down by creating a thread explaining that they don't know what happened and they can't do anything about the Big O mishap.

As for whether it was a mistake or prank. The William's Street crew shouldn't insult the viewers who are angry and just trying to get answers, especially since it was ADULT SWIM'S mistake, not the audience or the board posters. If it was a prank, I wouldn't put it out of the realm of the Adult Swim crew playing the prank then going to the "it was an error" card since people got really p'oed.

It kind of reminds me of the April Fool's day prank for South Park by Trey Parker and Matt Stone in 1998. however even then they showed a new episode featuring Terrence and Philip and not a rerun like Adult Swim did for Big O last night.

If it really was a mistake I'd like to know what happened. The fact that in the official announcement made today it says they are unaware of the error that was made makes me kind of suspicious.

I noticed Big O was a rerun, but didn't really care. So I'll wait another week to watch the last episode, and a week after that to watch that banned Family Guy episode. Just a wacky screw up. Oh well.

I may be wrong, but you don't REALLY have to wait. I thought "Wienstein" was on one or the other of the DVD collections.

The idea that the guys at Williams Street would play a prank and then wuss out on taking the credit because of the overreactions on their message board is a little unrealistic.

The same overwrought whining happens when they change anything, no matter how small. They pull Inuyasha for a while? OMG BOYC0TT ADULT SWIM!11! Home Movies gets pushed to the back burner for a while? ADLUT SWIM SUXX0RZ I HATE TEHM!!!!1 Cowboy BeBop changes time slots? OMG IM GOING TO KILL MYSELF F**CK U ADULT SWIM!!! It's pretty much a part of the message board experience... hell, we get something like that (minus a good portion of the hysteria) every time something dumb happens on Raw or Smackdown.

So why would they be so shocked that pulling a bait-and-switch with the final episode of a popular show caused an uproar, so shocked that they'd backpedal and frantically come up with an excuse? They've even talked about all the fanboy bitching on their bumper cards from time to time.

It was a programming mistake on someone's part. If it hadn't been, considering the booze and whatnot at their party SOMEONE would have said SOMETHING.

However, it does make me wonder... do the folks at Willams Street put the Adult Swim programming block together and transmit it themselves, or does Cartoon Network take care of that end?

It wouldn't make any sense as a prank. I mean, with the Family Guy episode slated for the next week, there wouldn't have been any way to reschedule Big O without causing a problem. The only way that I think it could have been a prank is if someone got liquored up at the party and thought it would be funny to make the switch. If that's the case, of course AS's official position would be that there was a mistake. Either way, however, this was a pretty big screw-up, especially with what happened on the forums and on the webcam party. By all rights, someone really should lose their job over this.

I'm 99% sure that this is a legitimate screw up and AS did not intend to piss off their fans with an ill-timed joke. However, 1% of me questions why the Peter Griffing ad proclaiming that Weinstein airs "next Sunday" debuted on Sunday. (I could be wrong on that, but I don't recall seeing it before.) While it would seem they'd only get mileage out of airing just on that Sunday, now, they've been able to air it all week, and this makes me wonder if they didn't plan on airing Weinstein on the 9th all along.

I don't know if someone should lose their job over this (of course, I'm still sensitive after being laid off earlier this year, so I'm biased), but I think at the very least this should serve as a wake-up call to AS regarding how to treat their fans.
